And then there were two…Apple drops iMac G5 from online store
Posted by Dr. Macenstein Apple today removed the 20-inch iMac G5 from its online store, taking the number of G5-based systems Apple sells down to 2 from 3, and knocking the number of G5 systems people actually care about down to 1 (sorry Xserve). On January 29th Apple lowered the price on the 20-inch G5 iMac to help clear out inventory. On February 3rd Apple took the 17-inch G5 iMac off its storefront after unloading its remaining supply of the units. As Apple transitions over... Read More
Apple makes inroads into 3500 Irish Schools
Posted by Helper Monkey We often hear of Apple’s battle to make headway in America’s education sector, but it is nice to see that Apple is also making a concerted effort to gain a youthful mindshare globally as well. Macenstein reader rico et nath sent us a link to a page on Apple UK’s site reporting that they have made a deal that will put them in all of Ireland’s 3500 primary schools by the end of 2006, primarily as part of the country’s FS... SURVEY: HD Radio preferred over iPods
Posted by Dr. Macenstein According to a “huge new study done by Mercury Radio Research, when given a choice between an iPod or a similarly priced HD radio, people “overwhelmingly chose the HD radio. This “giant study (done by a company whose interests are best served by the radio industry performing well) polled 1000 people. The “overwhelming results show 53% choosing an HD radio over the iPod overall, and 51% of people aged 18-34... Read More
Intel Mac mini running Windows XP up for action on eBay
Posted by Helper Monkey Macenstein reader Branjelina has alerted us that just a day after the announcement that a hacker has successfully gotten Windows XP to boot on an Intel Mac, someone has put up for auction on eBay an Apple Mac Mini Duo Core 1.6Ghz set up to boot both OS X 10.4 Tiger and Windows XP (or so they claim). The starting bid is $1000, and the auction includes disks for both Windows XP and Mac OS X. The mini ships with the standard 512 MB of RAM and 80 GB hard drive... Read More
Charity seeks to raise money for Steve Jobs’ family
Posted by iGor A California charitable organization is seeking to raise money for the family of Steve Jobs, who it was just reported received only a $1 salary from Apple this year. “This is outrageous, said Penny Pincher, Chairwoman of P.E.T.E. (People for the Ethical Treatment of Executives). “Mr. Jobs’ $1 a year salary breaks down to only $0.00048 an hour, well below California’s minimum wage of $6.75. We are seeking to raise enough money through... Read More
First full-length movie on iTunes?
Ok, The Matrix it is not, but many Macenstein readers have pointed out Disney has released “High School Musical? to the iTunes store. The film runs 1:39:41, making it a full-length movie by most standards. What’s more, you can download the entire feature for only $1.99, which would be a great sign of things to come (although somehow we doubt we’ll see real Hollywood blockbusters offered at that price). [UPDATE] Apple has changed the price of High School... Read More
iTMS adds free episode of TOP CHEF, more SHOWTIME content
Posted by Dr. Macenstein The iTunes Music Store has added a couple more seemingly odd content choices today. The first is a free pilot episode of TOP CHEF from the BRAVO network. Offering a free pilot episode of a show seems to be the new fad for networks interested in drumming up some buzz for a show (mainly because people like myself will download just about ANYTHING if its free). If after watching TOP CHEF you feel the need to prove you are still “all man, then... Read More
iMac G5 no longer available in UK online store
Posted by Dr. Macenstein The iMac G5 is no longer available in any configuration (17-inch or 20-inch) in the UK Apple online store. Last month Apple stopped selling the 17-inch G5 iMac when existing inventories ran out. Today the 20-inch G5 iMac disappeared from the UK store as its supplies ran out as well. Apparently supplies of the 20-inch G5 were smaller for the UK store than the its US counterpart, as the 20-inch model still shows up in the US store (with a 2-4 day ship time).... Read More
Is Safari a “Cash Cow” for Apple?
Posted by Lab Rat A recent rumor spurred by a posting on the blog of Jason McCabe Calacanis (CEO of Weblogs Inc.) is that the Mozilla Corporation made $72 million last year from distributing its free Firefox browser. How? Well, apparently when users search for something in the Google search bar (top right of the browser) and then click on a resulting Google ad, the author claims the Mozilla Corporation pockets somewhere in the neighborhood of 80% of the commission. Christopher... Read More
Microsoft’s “Google Killer not Safari friendly
Posted by Lab Rat Microsoft’s new Windows Live Search search engine doesn’t play well with Safari, or at least at the moment. While still in its beta stages, Windows Live Search seems to work just fine in Firefox, but Safari is unable to load it. In addition to search features, Windows Live Search seems to have all the basics you would find on Google and Yahoo, such as news, sports, webmail and messenger, although none of these worked for us. We’re not sure... Read More
