Samsung has a history of stealing Mac OS X icons

I’m not sure if rumors of Samsung using Safari in their new L870 handset are true or not – some say it simply means they are using a webkit-based browser, others say it is is actually Safari. Call me cynical, but I am betting Apple did NOT license the actual Safari app to another mobile phone company. I’m a little wary of Samsung’s mobile division in general, as they have a history of stealing icons for their handsets from OS X. Hmmm… that pencil... Read More

Who the hell are Niffirg?

MacRumors forum member raggedjimmi had the quote of the day today in reference to these alleged shots of Griffin case molds for the 3G iPhone. “Who the hell are Niffirg? Calling fake.” – MacRumors member raggedjimmi Thanks to faithful Macenstein reader Arn for the tip!  Read More

Apple begins 10.5.4 speculation by releasing 10.5.3

Apple today released the highly rumored 10.5.3 update for Mac OS X Leopard, which means we can now begin looking for hints of a 10.5.4 update. According to Apple, 10.5.3 includes a laundry list of fixes, far too lengthy and boring for me to bother copying and pasting. If you care, you can read about them here. I for one pretty much just install these things without questioning why, and have only been burned twice (Damn you QuickTime!), but until an OS update ruins my system,... Read More

Rumor: iPod Gen 2 ad at Wal-Mart?

Aside from the mysterious “gen 2″, there’s not much in this Wal-Mart ad snapshot to get excited about as the specs and prices seem the same as the current generation iPod touch. But hey, who needs a legitimate reason to get excited? This is an Apple product we’re talking about! That’s reason enough to go nuts. Thanks to faithful Macenstein reader Art Vandelay for the tip. Incestuous iFund funding?

Hmmm… Well, this is rather scandalous. It seems that both the named companies to receive iFund funds for iPhone application development thus far (out of over 1700 applicants) have deep ties to Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, the group overseeing the fund, with one in particular, iControl, even having a KPCB partner on its board… I suppose that’s one way to put your application on the fast track… [via a comment on digg.com] “John Doerr stood... Read More

99.83% of all new iPhone apps will suck [UPDATED]

Remember that mysterious iFund setup by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers to support worthwhile iPhone app development? Well, according to 9 to 5 Mac, a whopping 3 apps out of over 1700 submissions have thus far been deemed support-worthy by the fund, with a possible 10 more “being considered”. We’re no mathemagicians, but that more or less means the iFund trustees only deem 0.17% of all apps being submitted as showing any promise, or, to the glass half-empty... Read More

“Son of Macenstein” launches, to the delight of millions

Can’t get enough of the awesomeness that is Macenstein? We don’t blame you – after all, we do sort of rock. Well, in an attempt to fill the void between Apple-related posts, we are proud to announce we are launching Son of Macenstein, a brand new site designed to turn our trademark sarcasm and idiocy loose on the world in general. The idea is for the site to serve as an outlet for all the various newsworthy yet non-Mac-related items we come across while searching... Read More

“Electric Computers”? OK, Now Apple is just fucking with us

It takes such little effort for Apple to get front page publicity. A simple thing like changing the description on their cargo manifest to read “electric computers” from “desktop computers” has got the rumor community’s knickers in a twist. It seems that between those mysterious 188 containers everyone is talking about and that alleged solar iPhone… Apple has decided the best way to advertise is now viral. Simply patent something you may or... Read More

(Alleged) Celebrity Mac Chick Sighting: Eva Longoria

Well, I have no photo proof of this one, but it being slow news day, and me always on the lookout for an excuse to run a hot picture of a female celebrity, I figured I would go ahead and take the word of one of our most faithful readers, Robert J Taylor. Robert writes: So, in November 2006 I was in Southern California for a job interview (remote Perl application developer with a Santa Monica employer…didn’t work out) and on the flight back (Continental) I met a Mac... Read More

He’s got the whole world in his hands

Well, it’s not quite Google Earth, but earthscape.com has a pretty feature complete demo of a 3D globe running on the iPhone complete with tilt navigation and that pinchy zoomy goodness we all paid the big bucks for. Of course, Google Earth on the iPhone is pretty much a party trick, as who the hell needs the ability to zoom around the earth while waiting in line at Dunkin Donuts? (Oh, excuse me, STARBUCKS. I forgot it was the iPhone we were talking about for second).  Read More
