“WTF is up with the new iDisk icon!? I get it, “cloud computing”. But seriously, why purple? What was wrong with the blue globe? I guess this got snuck in with the MobileMe 1.1 update.”

Nice point, Kyle. Now I have a question for YOU. WTF is up with using the Apple “stones” desktop background? You don’t find that distracting?

  2. i use the “stones” background, also had MCOTM as well, but that turned out to be more distracting. Lessor of 2 evils

  8. I’m not sure if this applies to this icon, since it is from Apple, but you can customize your icons. Copy the image you want to use and click on the smaller icon in the window above, to the left of Kyle and modified, and use Command+V to paste it. You should see the blue highlight around it when you paste.

Someone try this and let me know how it works. I’m curious now.

  10. Mhmm the purple suits you guys well.

Imagine you’re at coffee-shops and have purple icons all over your desktop i’m sure it will attract some sweet boys.

  12. p.s. Apple has an article on their site on how to do this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304735

You have a problem, at least.

  16. Some of you guys are frigging stupid. So, purple is gay, and purple icons will attract sweet boys (insert pack of hooting monkeys). i understand that some leeway may be in order—you sound like zitty teeagers with the IQ of a boiled artichoke, but have you ever heard about “Thinking Different”? And are you sure you did not confuse your platforms?

  18. LOL. I had to admit, I saw it and nearly choked. I said this to my pithy co-worker who is 25 years my junior, and he said: “Don’t you hate it when your favorite company decides its market is not you, but is 18 year old girls?”

  22. Purple is gay? Why don’t you tell that to the man who’s probably pulled more tail than all of us put together: Prince. Not to mention, one of the best comic book villains ever wore purple (Joker).

BTW, The Dark Knight in 24 hours for me (midnight showing). Can’t wait.

  24. If you are so insecure in your masculinity that you are threatened by a drive icon and consider it “gay” because of it’s color…then I think it’s time you sought some counseling my friend(s).

  26. My wallpaper? I find it very “zen”. I’m still looking for a good background for the new 24-inch iMac.

On changing the icon, yes, I know it’s possible, and I do it all the time (for hard drives and such), but I’ve always been proud of Apple’s design work; the icons are usually so simple and elegant. This one just screams “myspace”.

  28. Ehm… actually, I think it’s the Rocks background, not Stones :D

  30. Do you guys mind? - TextMate’s icon is similar in colour to that, and TextMate is most definitely not gay. :-)

I wouldn’t call the MobileMe icon “purple”, though. That looks more like violet to me.

  32. It’s not so much that the fluffy purple-backed cloud identifies with a particular socio-sexual group, but that it clashes badly with the overall blue theme of the OS.

  34. C’mon folks. Saying this is “gay” is not meant to be a pejorative of homosexuals, it’s a comment on how effeminate this icon is. And boy, it really is! What a way to impress the Executive VP when you present the annual figures!

But the comments about “sweet boys” is ugly and out of line. This will, however, attract scads of 14 year old girls. Who do you think Barry would rather be caught with when the cops kick in his door?

And jeez, Groomsy, unless you can legally date those 14 year old girls, it’s time to move out of Mom’s basement.

Tell me what you're thinking...
