Rafael Nadal Gets BSoD – Time to Get A Mac?

Current number 1 ranked tennis star Rafael Nadal has apparently been having some trouble with his Windows laptop lately. Nadal, who writes a blog for the Times Online, has been experiencing some Blue Screen of Death crashes with growing frequency, thus hampering his ability to post timely updates. Writes Nadal:

“Hi everyone,

First of all apologies for not sending the blog yesterday and the day before. I did send the answers to your questions before but when I was writing the blog my screen went blue and the laptop crashed. I couldn’t believe it. I lost everything and could not get it back on.

Something is wrong with it. I might have to go and buy a new one since it’s being happening for a while now. It is also bad for me since I normally look every day to the newspapers to keep me informed of what’s going on. I don’t know how would it be nowadays to live without internet. Can you imagine?

For me to have internet and my laptop is fundamental. I chat with friends, read the newspapers, look for anything, just everything. If we want to go out and we want to make a reservation for anything we look at it on the internet. So to have my computer crashing is simply a mess…”

As much as my inner Apple fanboy wants to blame Nadal’s laptop problems 100% on Microsoft’s OS, perhaps it’s not entirely Windows’ fault. What if he sat on it? I mean, good lord, what’s the deal with Nadal’s ass?!? Not that I’m looking, but it almost knocks you down! No piece of computer hardware could take that kind of abuse!

Macenstein’s “Mac Chick of the Month” (August 2008): Miki Black

Welcome to Macenstein’s “Mac Chick of the Month”. Each month we feature a different die-hard, Mac-loving girl who is (almost) as well designed as the Apple products they love. This month we present you with the lovely Miki Black, a model/musician and die hard Mac Chick who is so fine, she blows our mind. Hey Miki! (We’re sure she’s never heard THAT one before!) Oh, and she has the best taste in music and movies we’ve yet found in a Mac Chick! :)

iPhone 3G temporarily replaced with Siemens C65

Above: Hmmm… not sure what Marian’s problem is…

As I prepare for my 4th iPhone 3G restore in the first 2 weeks since buying it, even I am getting tired of all the complaining about the iPhone’s version 2 firmware (although, I’m not as sick of the complaining as I am of the smart-asses who say “I have never had a problem yet, you must be doing something wrong“).

So that’s why I found it so refreshing to receive a CC on faithful Slovakian Macenstein reader Marian’s heartfelt e-mail to Steve Jobs detailing his iPhone 3G woes. First of all, unlike most of the recent iPhone bitching, what we have here is a good old-fashioned dead pixel story, the kind we 1st gen iPhone users grew up on. But more importantly, there is a twist to the story that will likely make you appreciate the customer service you’re getting wherever it is that you live (assuming it isn’t Slovakia). Read more

“America’s Hat” getting iPhone tethering before America?

Rogers says iPhone customers can tether their iPhones starting in October… so how are they going to do it?

There has been some speculation in the US as to whether or not AT&T will allow for a new iPhone data plan which allows for “tethering” laptops to the iPhone. Tethering allows iPhone users to share their internet connection via EDGE or 3G with their computers for those times they are on the road and away from Wi-Fi hotspots. The NetShare application which appeared briefly on the iTunes store did just that before it was yanked by Apple at the request of AT&T. However, it appears that AT&T is not necessary against iPhone tethering, just “free” iPhone tethering (if $30 a month can be considered “free”). Recently an alleged e-mail from Steve Jobs has surfaced in which tells a tether-hungry customer Apple is currently “discussing it [a tethering plan] with ATT”.

Canada first to legally tether?

Well, it would appear that although Apple/AT&T negotiations are moving along slowly, it looks like Apple/Rogers talks have advanced quite a bit further. Rogers has announced that starting in October, all Canadian iPhone data plans will allow for tethering.

So the question is, how will they do it? Read more

Some people are just not meant to own an iPhone

Cambodia? WTF? Oh… she’s so cute, I can’t stay mad at her!

Well, first of all, let me just say I don’t think you can use ANY cell phone with those nails, but I thought her delivery was funny and I was thoroughly charmed. Sort of like Margaret Cho, only funny. I suppose ultimately this is a pro-Apple video, done somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but on the odd chance this really was made as a pro-Windows piece, well, Apple should adopt it as their next iPhone commercial, and call it “Some people are just not meant to own an iPhone“.

Mac Pro Repair Girl… Does she make house calls?

OK, is it just me or is there something ridiculously sexy when a girl knows how to upgrade a computer, let alone a Pro machine? Come to think of it, my Mac Pro has actually been acting up a bit lately. I wonder if this girl makes house calls? (Warning, I estimate this pic may not be safe at a good 80% of workplaces).

Giant Pink Lady gets out-smarted by Mac Dude

I had read this story over a year ago during the original iPhone launch – a rich “would-be” eBay tycon pulls up to the line of people who had been waiting outside an AT&T store for hours, flashes $100,000 in cash, and buys the first-in-line spot from a kid for $800 in hopes of buying out the entire store’s iPhone supply, only to be told there is a 1-iPhone-per-customer rule – but somehow seeing the video makes it soooo much better.

Batman LEGO game for iPhone is the best unfounded rumor ever

If there’s one thing I love more than LEGOs, it’s Batman. And if there’s one thing I love more than Batman, it’s the iPhone. That’s why I totally understand the excitement behind a fast-spreading rumor that LEGO Batman is being ported to the iPhone.

Never mind that there appears to be zero evidence of this at the moment – all we have to go on is an anonymous tip to Pocket Gamer – and never mind I can’t think of any possible way the game could be playable without some sort of third party gaming pad accessory Read more

Video: Waterproof spray-on coating for your iPhone, laptop

Probably the number one threat to iPhones is the dreaded “accidental toilet drop”. While all cell phones fear it, the iPhone is particularly at risk because users are often asked to shake the hell out of their iPhones when playing these games. It’s a recipe for “accidental toilet drop”-disaster.

Well, Cape Cod-based Northwest Maritime Institute has come up with some sort of crazy high-tech, vacuum-applied spray coating for electronics that can coat the entire device – inside and out – making it not only water-resistant, but downright submersible! It is called “ Golden Shellback“, and I like to think of it as Magic Shell for iPhones. Check out the video below to see an iPod touch that has been blessed with the spray crank out video from The Little Mermaid while underwater (very fitting choice, as Mermaids have got to be one of the primary target audiences for this).

Golden Shellback is currently calling the coating “Splashproof”, but I think if they want to go that route to cover their butts they really better stop showing phones and iPods working fine while completely underwater. The process, expected to cost under Read more
