“The 12 Days AFTER Christmas” Giveaway: Day 6
[Thank you, we have our winner. This contest is closed. Congratulations to faithful Macenstein reader RandomPerson]
On the Sixth Day After Christmas, Macenstein gave to you (or, more accurately, gave you a chance to win…) A 320GB OWC Mercury On-The-Go Oxford924 FireWire 800&400+USB2 5400RPM 8MB Cache Portable SATA 2.5″ based Storage Solution
“Huh?”
That’s a fancy way of saying “hard drive”, dummy! And a big one too (at least storage-wise - at 320 GB!). Physically, it’s actually quite small and fits easily in your laptop bag inside its included carrying case. I have 2 of these, and I love them – perfect for running Time Machine on my MacBook Pro.

Above: Palm-sized, FireWire 400/800, and USB 2 connections, a cool carrying case and cables included! What more could you want?
Finally! Now you have no excuse not to back up your laptop (you know you’re not doing it).
The OWC Mercury On-The-Go FireWire 800/400 + USB 2.0 Portable Kit packs an incredible punch into a 3″Wx5.5″Lx1″H 11 ounce package!
If you’re looking for one of the most compatible mass storage solutions made, look no further! The OWC Mercury On-The-Go drive is all you’ll need! Packing a one-two punch of super fast FireWire 800 and USB 2.0, the OWC Mercury On-The-Go has what it takes to truly work cross platform.
The OWC Mercury On-The-Go keeps everything running silent while still keeping your drive cool with a built in aluminum heatsink underneath the hard drive, and passthrough cooling vents on the top of the case.
The OWC Mercury On-The-Go drive uses the latest Oxford chipset, the 924, for both FireWire 800/400 and USB 2.0. Designed to work with SATA hard drives, this chipset is the latest evolution of the best performing FireWire chipsets on the market.
FireWire/1394 makes it easy, OWC Mercury makes it faster! With transfer rates of up to 800mbs, plug and play connection, and professional level FireWire software, you will not go wrong with an OWC Mercury FireWire Drive.
To enter: Since the Mercury On-The-Go is all about space (both storage, and not physically taking up much), leave us a comment telling us what you think is the best Sci-Fi Space movie ever. Winners will be picked randomly 7 days later and notified (kind of like in The Ring, only with less killing… we hope). Open to all readers world-wide. Good luck, and thanks for reading Macenstein! (Oh, and be sure to enter ALL our “12 Days AFTER Christmas” Giveaways!)
Please note: Comments may take a while to show up, please do not double-post. Thanks!

Serenity, because I looooved Firefly.
“Serenity” takes the cake for me.
Any of the Star Trek movies!!
that makes 3 for Serenity.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture…
Hands down:
2001: A Space Odyssey
Star Wars raised the bar for me!
Star Wars Sague… Love Princess Amidala!!
Any of the Aliens movies.
Serenity for me
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? that’s the best I can do with a space movie … sorry
Serenity
Back To The Future Trilogy
Sunshine.
Not sure it was the best, but it made you think a bit.
Serenity
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
I was a kid when I watched it for the first time, and it was COOL!
Back to the Future isn’t space! =) Serenity all the way. Firefly was awesome and died too soon, and the greatest voice in Science Fiction (Orson Scott Card) said it was the best science fiction movie of all time!
Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (the movie)
2001: A Space Odyssey
I’m going to have to jump on the bandwagon and agree with “Serenity” I was going to say “2001″ because it’s a ‘classic’ but Serenity was just so damn good…
Spaceballs. No question.
I want to jump on the Serenity bandwagon, but I’m going with Bladerunner.
STAR WARS!!!!!!!!
Silent running.
most wouldn’t of heard of it, its an older one, but one of the best SCI FI movies I ever watched, very heart breaking ending.
i know i cant win this competition as its only offered to US residents, but thought id pipe in anyway
P.S: the chick from serenity/terminator chronicles , ohhhh baby
Serenity!
i have to say 2001 for me… possibly will change when j.j. abrams’ star trek comes out soon.
although i wasn’t a cloverfield fan…
Does Spaceballs count?
Either way I choose that!
Ice Pirates!!! Hahahah
Jason X
Actually Alien.
Empire Strikes Back.
2001: A Space Odyssey without a doubt
Start Wars 3
It is so hard to pick! There are too many movies to choose from.
Blade Runner Directors Cut…
I’m going to say that the best space movie is Event Horizon, simply for the fact that a friend of mine got extreme motion sickness during the opening scene and threw up in the theater. That’s real filmmaking right there.
Serenity… It’s what made my fiance finally fall in love w/ sci-fi.
Yo definitely space balls!
I’m not a big fan of Star Wars or Star Trek and I haven’t heard of the others so…
WALL-E
Robot Chaplin in Space FTW!
2001: A Space Odyssey. Simple. Amazing. Simply amazing.
star wars
I would have to say Serenity as well.
2001: a space odyssey. totally.
If I had to choose, it would be one of the Star Wars…
2001 space odyssey
2001: a space odyssey
Stargate
Lost In Space!!! Matt LeBlanc is the best!!!!
The original Star Wars (Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi) are my favorite Sci-Fi movies of all time as they not only got me hooked on both practical and fictional science but also helped push me into pursuing a career in animation and visual effects. I still recall sitting in a cardboard box with my little brother pretending it was the Millennium Falcon with us blasting our way through a fleet of Star Destroyers
Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan
Star Trek: First Contact
Serinity, of course.
The best sci-fi movie ever has got to be Star Wars, episode 4, A New Hope.
2001: A Space Odyssey is the only one I’d even consider liking.
ALIENNNNN
Wait, Wait, Wait - Wall E!
Spaceballs
It’s difficult to say “best” without a frame of reference.
In some respects, I’d suggest Forbidden Planet as the best, if only because it laid the groundwork for almost everything that followed.
Sort of a space movie, and “best” in a skewed way is Lifeforce. After all, how can a movie with naked-babe-vampires from space turning London into zombies (including Patrick Stewart) be anything BUT extraordinary?
2001 — clearly amazing. Serenity — great fun. The Santa Claus Conquers the Martians — even the title rocks. Pitch Black — unexpectedly enjoyable. Close Encounters and ET — made aliens friendly again and even Mars Attacks! couldn’t take that away.
But the film that has sparked more imaginations and built the modern perception of the genre is clearly Star Wars (retronymed as Episode IV). So, I’d have to place my vote there.
Serenity
Got to be Gattaca! Or maybe Blade Runner! And Serenity? omg, I can’t pick!
OK, Blade Runner will do for me then!
“…like tears in the rain….we just fade away…”
BLADE RUNNER!!!
I want one Please!
Please I really need this for storage
The Forbidden Planet! Robby the Robot and a hot chick on an alien world! Awesome music using analog ring modulator synths, too. A true classic.
Gataca
Star Trek, The Movie, cuz my middle initial is T and my last name is KIRK, and sequels never equal the first movie.
Star Trek — First Contact.
My favourite SciFi movie, hands down.
Partick Stewart is unbeatable!
A Brit playing a Frenchman for over two decades?
It gets no tougher than this.
The Ewok Christmas show.
that shit was nuts.
2001 A Space Odyssey
star wars
Star Wars.
by far the best one is Office SPACE….
Empire Strikes Back.
Wall*E, if that isn’t that kind of films, then i’d choose Star Wars
Futurama ^^
(there is a movie so it counts right?)
Alien
Serenity
Alien or Aliens, can’t decide
any star wars of course!
Probably Return of the Jedi. That, or Star Wars Ep. 2.
Serenity just wasn’t good enough for Firefly.
The Last Starfighter (1984)
Solaris. But the original version, not the Hollywood remake.
Space Balls
Star Wars for me.
Futurama?
I don’t know about scifi but space jam is sweet
I’m going to have to go with Empire Strikes Back
2001: a space odyssey
Star Gate SG-1
i would say bladerunner, but its not a space movie, so i will have to go with star wars. changed my young life.
Shit sorry, I thought just Sci-Fi HG2G then
Going to have to go with the masses and agree that 2001 is the best.
Hard question this one.. but I’m definitely gonna go with
StarWars Episode VII
Serenity
2001 - A Space Odyssey
2001: A Space Odyssey for me.
Star Wars.
Star Wars !!!
not the best, but i recommend 1998 sphere taken from the novel by michael crichton, with cast like dustin hoffman, sharon stone, samuel l jackson, and queen latifah
The Matrix. Both for the story and the technical innovations!
Star Wars
Back to the future II FTW!!!
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
…and yes it’s because I’m a connoisseur
Alien (the 1st one!! :D)
Serenity!
star trek movie
I vote for stargate, too, particularly for the serie !
It was really great
Alien. …mostly…
I think the best is: The Chronicles of Riddick.
2001: A Space Oddyssey
Does “Forbidden Planet” count as a space movie? It’s on an alien planet!
WALL-E is the best
2001: A Space Odyssey.
With Alien tetralogy closing in.
2001: A Space Odyssey
When theyre floating through space and Bach’s music is playing, thats the best part of the movie
i just watched Serenity from my MBP and I absolutely love it. I still have to watch Firefly but for now Serenity takes the cake.
i like Stargate too
Serenity
It’s got to be 2001: A Space Odyssey.
You can’t do better than the best - Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick. Masterpiece.
Blade Runner, without a doubt.
I have to go with Star Wars… 2001: A Space Odyssey is good but…
Second on stargate.
Hum… Plan Nine From Outer Space?
Oh no, wait, the question was about the BEST sci-fi movie… Then I would have to say 2001 A Space Odyssey
Back to the Future trilogy.
Contact ftw!
Aliens is the best of the series.
i would say Gattaca
Aliens
(The second one)
OK, so we know Spaceballs rocked; H2G2 did a good job with a great set of stories; 2001 set the bar; and Star Trek movies outlasted the series. Gotta like The Fifth Element: Bruce Willis shootin’ up spaceships and dumb space bad guys. Can’t forget Milla Jovovich… what’s not to like? Still, Star Wars movies added tremendously realistic CG and character development to the genre so Star Wars!
“Aliens!”
Star Wars
I always have been fascinated by Star Trek and Jean Luc Piclard
WALL-E
2001: A Space Odyssey
Star Wars
2001: a space odyssey
The best sci-fi movie is, in my opinion Wall-E. It has it all; robots, romance, spaceships, music, explosions, satire, depth, accessibility, and, above all, APPLE REFERENCES!!! Wall-E has an iPod, makes the Mac boot chime, and Pixar had Jony Ive help design Eve. In fact, it’s the film Wall-E that got me to, eventually, switch to Mac. However, that’s a story for another time…. Thanks for the opportunity to win this hard drive, Doc!
sunshine was legit.
I will have to go with “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”. Don’t forget, the answer is 42.
Of course the original Star Wars…
One of my all time favourites is - First Men in the Moon
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058100/
It has classic stamped all over it. Go watch it now - you can thank me later.
Serenity
Gonna have to go with Aliens (director’s cut). Yeah!
Serenity FTW!
I’m like the majority here… Star Wars I.
BTW Wall-e isn’t sci-fi movie… It’s a story for kids, isn’t it?
A Boy And His Dog
I really liked Sunshine for some reason.
2001: a space odyssey
Aliens.
2001: A Space Odyssey
2001: A Space Odyssey
2001: A Space Odyssey
2001: A Space Odyssey
cow boy bebop the movie
Silent Running
Dave, stop. Stop, will you? I am afraid.. My mind is going, I can feel it.
The tragic death of HAL 9000
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, no doubt it’s the best. terry pratchett really knows his stuff
Stargate
Best space movie: Spaceballs. Without a doubt.
“They’ve gone plaid!”
The Empire Strikes Back
Battlefield Earth.
Oh, you said the BEST movie.
Then definitely Blade Runner.
Starship Troopers!!! Oh boy!
Star Wars - without a doubt!
I think the best Sci-Fi movie would probably be The Matrix..different kind of Sci-Fi movie, but one of the best of all times
Blade Runner, or if that’s not spacey enough,
the original Day the Earth Stood Still
Since I am also monitored to respond to the name “Robby,” I’ll have to go with Forbidden Planet also.
2001 was pretty good too, however.
Hate to be a cliche’, but I followed Firefly all the way through its tortured existence ……… Serenity now.
Gattaca…it counts, because they go into space at the end.
If not, I would say Star Trek 2.
All the Species movies. I mean who could resist hot alien women trying to take over the world by having sex. Natasha Henstridge….mmmmmm…….
Star Wars aka Episode IV: A New Hope
The Fifth Element
the diva’s performance in it is one of my favorite moments, aside from the flying cars.
Ice Pirates!!!!
Star Wars Saga
Even though I love Serenity I have to say
Star Wars - Episode IV
empire strikes back
A New Hope. Saw it 20 times in the 70’s and maybe that many more when the Special Edition came out….
For me : Event Horizon
Spaceballs!!!
“2001: A Space Odyssey” Hands down
2001: A Space Odyssey
2001: A Space Odyssey
I love Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, the only truly ‘kooky’ movie.
Alien
Galaxy Quest
E.T. Ouuuuuuuuuucchhhhhhhhhhhh
2001 Space Odyssey
“Plan 9 From Outer Space,” of course!
Star Wars
Contact
Space Balls
Empire Strikes Back!
Buckaroo Bonzai… a movie no one will watch with me.
But Christopher Lloyd as John Bigbooty… what’s not to like?
er, the original star wars trilogy!
Empire Strikes Back is the standard by which all others are judged!!!!
Serenity
(Doesn’t Bladerunner take place on Earth? In the future but Earth?)
The Fifth Element is one of my favorites.
I like the one where the large black robot guy cuts off the skinny white guys hand, tells him who is baby daddy is and throws him down a hole.
an ancient mexican movie… it narrates our superiority and how two mexican astronauts go to the moon unleashing a culture in the whole mexico of education, good manners and incredible fast technological advance.
jajajajaja I swear its a really good saga even better than star wars
Spaceballs. Period.
The Last Star Fighter
Great movie, and still a classic!
The original The Day the Earth Stood Still, will have to check out the remake of it.
The Empire Strikes Back
Wow, there are so many really good ones.
Serenity is great,
I also like a couple of the Star Trek and the older Star Wars.
back to the future
The day the earth stood still, the original not the new remake.
E.T.
star wars
Dune
2001: A Space Odyssey
Another vote for “Bladerunner”
Star Wars - Empire Strikes Back
By far the best is Star Wars~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Hands Up!
2001: A Space Odyssey
Spaceballs…. I laughed my @r$$ off. Or Serenity
I’m going to have to agree with some other commenters and say the original Star Wars (aka Episode IV), if only because it really brought sci-fi movies into the mainstream movie-goer consciousness. It’s not my favorite sci-fi movie of all time, but its positive impact on the sci-fi genre - particularly of the action-packed variety - cannot be denied.
My personal favorite is probably Serenity, but I’m a Browncoat through and through.
Star Trek: First Contact
2001: A Space Odyssey
Not to be bandwagon jumping or anything, but I must add my voice to SERENITY. There’s a lot of great tales in the sci-fi genre but that’s one I keep reaching for…
Star Wars! I was 7 years old when it came out and it still is in my mind when my parents took me to see it… I begged to go! Best experience ever for a 7 year old… even though my Dad fell asleep!! After that, got all the SW toys including the Millennium Falcon and Death Star… after I went to University, my Mom sold them in a garage sale… DOH!!!!
Ice Pirates!
“the ship has space herpes.”
For the best space-based Sci Fi movie, I would choose the original Star Wars. Runners up include Star Trek: First Contact, Serenity, Forbidden Planet, The Day the Earth Stood Still (well, Klatu came from space), and Alien. Honorable mentions to 2001 and to Independence Day.
Space Balls
The Fifth Element.
Serenity. I cried like a baby when I saw the uncut raw version.
I am and always will be a Star Wars fan. So the original Star Wars, A New Hope
WALL•E !
Star Trek
2001: A Space Odyssey… saw it for the first time last week and I love it!
I’m in for 2001: A Space Odyssey starring the HAL 9000 computer.
Wrath of Khan. The Best Trek Movie Ever. KHAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Star Wars
The Star Wars movies do it for me…
My vote goes to Aliens.
Serenity
Barabrella for its awesome badness.
Plan 9 From Outer Space. Fun to watch and never gets old.
Star (Wars/Trek)
Star Wars
OK, so this might surprise people, but Star Wars is NOT science fiction! It’s actually fantasy! You’ll notice the story doesn’t focus around the technology, but on Princesses, Knights, Magic, Rogues and evil Emperors. Anyway!
One of my favorite (just for giggles) sci-fi movies is Galaxy Quest! If anything just because it makes fun of Star Trek so well. And everyone loves a good parody.
I’ll go with Serenity, just ’cause I’m rewatching Firefly at this moment!
Dark Star
Spaceballs
Im not really into Sci Fi but I loved Spaceballs
It’s gotta be Ice Pirates! :p
Since you qualified it with “Space” Sci-Fi, as opposed to general Sci-Fi, I’d have to say The Wrath of Khan.
Empire Strikes Back.
Star Wars - It revitalized the genre. And Kyle B. is wrong. A focus on technology is NOT a requirement for science fiction. Witness Bradbury, Heinlein, Herbert, Le Guin and many other SF authors.
Star Wars
Alien.
Star Wars Episode 4
Serenity - I love that movie….
The best space movie ever is “Star Wars.” The original, where Han shoots first. Because he is a pirate, George! He will always shoot first. So Star Wars, the original, unedited, unrevisionist history, so George can sleep better at night, is the best. And keep up the great work Mac. Oh and happy New Year.
Solaris, hands down.
Here’s a throwback from my childhood:
Flight of the Navigator
As an adult, it’s probably a pretty crappy movie. But when I was little, it was a lot of fun.
Aliens
i was gonna go with wrath of khan for those lovely little earwigs, but i’ve gotta go with serenity and curse at fox for shuttin it down
Spaceballs!
I’ve gotta go with Star Wars - the original holy trilogy.
Hitchhiker’s Guide, definitely.
I would have to go with ST2: The Wrath of Khan …
I can watch that over and over …
xmen
Even after George Lucas did his best to ruin my childhood memories, it’s still Star Wars for me.
for me it’s star trek: first contact- it is definitely the best of the trek movies so far.
Obvious and a bit trite I know but given the quality of Lucas these days, I long for the original “Star Wars” version off the laser disk….
I see a lot of votes for Serenity and I’m going to have to throw my hat in the same ring!
2001: A Space Odyssey
Definitely Space Balls.
Yeah, I don’t care if it was just a parody
Entered
Spaceballs! Not sure if that counts for scifi for everyone else, but it does for me
2001. Coolest space movie ever.
Star Trek: First Contact
I am going to have to say any of the Star Wars movies. With Serenity and Starship troopers battling for second!
only 2 i can even name atm are Galaxy Quest and Contact
The best movie is: 2001, Space Odyssey
(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/).
2001 space odyssey
The Empire Strikes Back.
It’s a tie between Star Wars, Serenity, and Sunshine.
Btw Doc, I REALLY NEED that hard drive. Like seriously. I’m down to kilobytes here.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Aliens rocks.
I liked Event Horizon, even though it was like a horror sci-fi space movie.
Back to the Future!!!
Definitely the WALL-E, or Gattaca!!!
Spaceballs
ill stick to wall-e
Battle Beyond teh Stars!
Star Trek Wrath of Khan
Aliens
Blade Runner: Director’s Cut
Stanley Kubrick space in 2001: A Space Odyssey is the best ever, for sure.
Plan 9 From Outer Space
the empire strikes back. hands down!
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
Star Wars episode 4, A New Hope.
Star Wars
Wall*E
I have to agree that the original Star Wars Trilogy raised the bar for Space Sci-Fi. I do love Serenity, Star Trek, 2001, 2010, etc…The list goes on and on. I joked with my wife about Jason X and LMAO’d when I saw it listed. Anyway I have to commit myself to Star Wars FTW!
I really like back to the future!
Aliens
whenever I come across this on the box I find myself watching the whole thing again
Ice Pirates is the best
2001, clearly.
With question- Star Wars
Oops!
Without question-Star Wars!
Wall-E!!!!
Mine is the Star Wars Trilogy, cause as a kid it captured my imagination and monopolized it for many years to come! Thanks!
Star wars for sure.
But…
Space balls as well!
Another vote for SPACE BALLS.
the thing
I want to say Blade Runner, but it’s really more like a sci-fi thriller cop movie, nothing particular “space” about it.
So I’ll go with 2001 on the “high-art, makes you think and sticks in your head for life” choice, and the Htichhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy on the fun comedy end of the spectrum. (I’m talking about the 1981 BBC miniseries, not the more recent remake which could have been awesome, but toooooootally blew it and strayed too far from the books in both plot details and tone)
Plus, I could really use that drive! My Macboo Pro’s boot drive is a 320GB, so this external 320GB would make the perfect backup drive.
Battlestar Galactica
Any of the Star Wars
Can’t help loving STAR WARS, ever since the first one back around 1977!
Spaceballs!!
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Thing From Another World
space balls
Star Wars ^_^ both the new and old trilogy
Space Balls
E.T
Look, everyone knows that Armageddon was the best movie ever. Why is this even a question?
Space Balls…Its in space but mocks all space movies.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Great movie.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
I think if you toss out Star Wars since that’s just too cliche of an answer I’d have to go with Pitch Black, the original, not chronicles of riddick or anything I like Riddick as a bad guy he was soo much better that way
back to the future trilogy
Old school War of the Worlds!
Serenity, Yee-Haw
Star Trek II : The Wrath of Khan
The Fifth Element
clearly, without a doubt - 2001: A Space Odyssey
No contest: 2001
Event Horizon.
Oh bother, do you know how hard it is for nerds, sci fi nerds in particularly to wade through every single Sci Fi movie to come up with a number 1, Doc… doc… you are too hard on us! So you get more than one however we’ll confine it to the just the distopian genre…
Distopian Future
Blade Runner the Final Cut (preferably blu-ray version)
Brave New World
(tho not really sci fi, it was in the set in the future when i was written) 1984
Gattica
Soylent Green
The Omega Man
Planet of the Apes (original)
THX-11-38
(and tho this is sort of not distopian as it’s originally based off Shakespeare’s’ The Tempest) Forbidden Planet
Wall-E
Blade runner has to be the one
The God’s Themselves
Wall*E
Star wars
Serenity
That’s a hard one to pin down… what comes to mind is 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, and Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind was good when it originally came out.
If you’re looking for space within our own planet, then The Abyss held its own as well.
What an awesome gift to give out. I don’t know how you guys do it, but God bless you for giving us all a chance to win. Happy New Year!
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
for sure Star Wars!
Blade Runner, Forbidden Planet, 2001
I guess I’m showing my age.
Serenity
Star Wars or the Steven Spielberg miniseries Taken
I’m gonna go with Star Wars.
A few come to mind…
“Alien” - the only movie to ever make me jump out of my theater chair.
“Dark City” - strange movie.
“The Thing” (1982) - a good gross out flic.
“The Fly” & all the sequels - I’ll not watch these movies again, too many childhood nightmares.
Hard to beat 2001: A Space Odyssey. Though if I had to pick a more recent movie, it would have to be Serenity.
Star Wars - Return of the Jedi
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Awesome.
the empire strikes back….60% of the time it works everytime
Star Wars : Return of the Jedi
Jason X. I mean come on Jason Voorhees in the 25th century on a spaceship.
The Empire Strikes Back.
2001: A Space Odyssey.
Space Balls no question
It has to be the one and only “Star Wars”!!!
Sunshine
I’m sure about five hundred of the three-hundred-something posts have said the same: Serenity.
2001: A Space Odyssey.
Thanks, Doc!
Serenity
i know it seems like a cliche - but “2001 A Space Odyssey” is so far ahead of it’s time and remains a great story 40 years later, that I have to choose it. Also the Blu-ray version kicks ass, it takes place in SPACE and there are storage devices referred to in the ship…
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Fifth Element.
Sunshine!
Definitely 2001 A Space Odyssey!
Another one for SPACEBALLS.
Sorry to be a spoiler, but Blade Runner was not a space sci-fi. It was a “robot” sci-fi.
2001 - A Space Idiocy
Gotta love 5th element
Blade Runner without a doubt!
WALL=E
The Fifth Element
Serenity for sure
2001: A Space Travesty, with good ol’ “Naked Gun” style comedy. Leslie Neisen is a fellow Canuck, too.
taking place in space- the first Aliens
taking place on earth with a space creature- the first Preditor
Serenity. No other choice.
galaxy quest is a great movie
Star Wars!
Alien
Gotta go with Star Wars
I really liked Contact (probably because I’m a Jodie Foster fan).
The fifth element!!!
Spaceballs!!! It is funny and it’s the only one I can watch with my wife
Blade Runner
Star Wars IV and 2001. I cannot pick one over the other!
Star Trek 4
Star Treck series!
Ciao!
Spaceballs!
Easily Serenity. If you haven’t seen it yet, go buy it. It’s worth the money and buying it’ll encourage them to make a sequel.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Definately Serenity
Tough one…I liked the Alien movies the best.
Wall-E
the empire strikes back
Star Treck series. Ciao!
Star Wars
hate to be a jump on the bandwagon guy, but Serenity gets my vote as well.
Well, it HAS to be Alien. The original and best. Scared the life out of millions whilst providing enough spaceship-ness to satisfy the most critical sci-fi buff. Happy New Year!
Star Wars
2001: A Space Odyssey
2001: A Space Odyssey
Star Wars
Star Wars: A New Hope. Darth Vader boading the ship in the first scene was unforgettable for this 5 year old.
Star Wars Saga is the best ever!
What about Disney’s “The Black Hole?” Not my favorite, but it seemed like we’re just going for obscure at this point. My real vote goes to “The Empire Strikes Back.”
Event Horizon
Just messed up.
Need See Buckaroo Banzai!
Serenity
Forbidden Planet. The 1956 version with Leslie Nielsen.
Theirs certainly something to be said for Silent Running and 2001 but … yawn. Star Wars was certainly big when I was a kid as well and I loved Alien but after all is said and done…
it’s clearly got to be Spaceballs
“You have the ring, and I see your Schwartz is as big as mine. Let’s see how well you handle it. “
Best Sci Fi Space Movie EVER??? Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan
Star Wars, the first trilogy
Star Wars
Serenity
Galaxy Quest
Another vote for Serenity.
SOLARIS is certainly my fave!
I’d say Solaris is my Fave. Both the Russian and the American Version.
Unquestionably Star Wars
The Time Machine (the old one)
The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars blew me away when I was 6 years old.
All Star Wars
Star Wars blew me away when I was 6 years old.
Note: not sure if the first time was successful.
Dark Star “.” john carpenters student film.
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind!
Really, with your buddies, late in the night, on a giant plasma hdtv and many beers: you’re in.
Serenity
Serenity, of course. Though Star Trek: First Contact is a close second.
The Forbidden Planet still creeps me out, even though it has been around forever.
“Galaxy Quest!”
also “What Planet Are You From?”
Wrath of Khan. KHAAAAAAAANNNNNN! KHAAAAAAAANNNNNN!
Star Wars is my favorite
Hands down E.T.!
Armageddon with Bruce Wilson does it for me
It’s been around for a time but still a great Sci-Fi ~!
Forbidden Planet
2001 A Space Odyssey Classic Sci-Fi!
The Wrath of Khan. What could be better than the Kirk in all of his unholy glory!
Or Blade Runner.
Return of the Jedi
Star Wars Episode I
Predator.
Aleita, Queen of Mars…1920s Russian Sci Fi propoganda! Greatest…film…EVER.
Have to go with Star Wars
Another vote for Serenity methinks.
Serenity, ‘though it had to cap off a short-lived series, was a good movie to the faithful followers.
Serenity
does space chimps count? if not then alien. :p
odyssey 2001
2001: a space odyssey
Forbidden Planet
Serenity
Blade Runner, robots, flying cars and a cynical dective, perfect.
Serenity… No contest.
Except the one I’m entering.
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
A film not just about space and exploration of space, but about humanity’s place in the universe.
Serenity
More one vote^^
Tron was pretty cool back in the early days
‘The beast with a billion backs’ was really-really good!
Star Wars, the original, for sheer originality at the time. Empire is better as a movie but lags slightly behind because it wasn’t first
Star Wars
It has to be Ice Pirates. Has there ever been better campy sci-fi fun I ask?!
Star Wars
Back To The Future is Sci-fi, right? Time travel involves the space time continuum!
WALL.e
How come no one has said Stargate? Oh, right, it wasn’t that great…
I’m going with Star Trek: Generations… it may not be the best Sci-Fi Space movie ever, but I do enjoy it a lot.
Wall-E. Love that movie.
2001 A Space Odissey
Still hard to beat. Precise science, great art. The big questions put in a mythical way, without the religious crap, but with lots of spirituality, this is what SciFi is ought to be.
Star Wars…
star wars duh!
I’d have to say 2001: A Space Odyssey
STAR TREK INSURECTION
Fahrenheit 451
Event Horizon is a menacing story indeed, then there’s is Strange Days, and of course Minority Report
WALL-e
Yep, Serenity
This is a tough one and while I agree serenity rocks, it was the 2 hour end of a show cancelled before it’s time I miss fire fly. The same with the star trek series, bsg, SG1 and sgA. I’m surprised no one brought up space 1999 ( those shuttles are about ten years beyond what we can do) or something a bit darker like space above and beyond. so for a true sci-fi movie….lets go with the day the earth stood still though i could name dozens others just as good
Serenity
Space Balls
Serenity
Galaxy Quest.
Solyaris, the Russian version.
Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, both versions are brilliant
Serenity.
BTW, what’s up with so many people saying Back to the Future? Did that movie have anything to do at all with outer space or am I just forgetting?
It’s a close one, between Serenity and Star Wars: A New Hope.
Apples and Oranges.
OK, Serenity.
Have to go for the classic STARWARS
ps wont firewire not work on the new mbp?
I really liked The Postman with Kevin Costner, it was long but not bad at all!
If Wall-E doesn’t count, then I’m going to have to say Serenity too.
Star Trek or Star Wars. Depends on the person and mood. Trust me, I worked at Blockbusters
Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi!
Terminator 2
The Black Hole.
Go Canada!
Earth Girls Are Easy.
Going to have to concur with all the others who chose Serenity
Aliens
Blade Runner started it all!!!!
Not exactly a space movie in the traditional sense, but the first sci-fi movie I saw was Contact, which is what led me to want to be an astronomer!
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
I’d say Wall-E.
blade runner
Any Star Wars film!
2001 - A Space Odyssey
Wrath Of Kahn. Done.
Flash Gordon
“Tron”, the space within.
2001
Sunshine is the best space movie ever because while it is set in space, it has a moral grounding and is grounded in a possible reality
Alien
Have to go with Serenity, nothing to dislike about that one!
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, even if it doesn’t really fit in that category…
Blade Runner rocks.
Total Recall, if only because it made Philip K. Dick an action movie script resource.
Not that any of his other stories worked as action scripts.
Gotta go with the star wars movies because i have a major soft spot for c3po
Star Wars - A New Hope, it’s the original.
Star Wars
Tough choice. Either 2001 or Apollo 13.
2001 was great, and was enjoyed equally with or without dropping acid. Seeing it in CinemaScope should be a Constitutional Right.
But I choose Apollo 13, easily the best non-documentary depiction of real-life space travel. Both the number and size of the bolts and rivets holding that tin can together probably had anyone under thirty thinking this was Steam Punk set design. Some parts were a little slick, but it was very true to the look and feel of the time.
Seeing Mattingly’s (Gary Sinise) real-life simulation test of the electrical system was fantastic. There was no virtual reality in 1970. Only reality. And watching these guys calculate burn times and flight path adjustments with slide rules and pencils was awe inspiring. Most people today can’t balance their checkbook without Quicken or Excel.
Watch the Discovery Channel’s “When We Left Earth” series for the real bone-chilling stories of what all these guys did. They were freakin’ crazy. http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/nasa/programs/programs.html
Honorable mention: Saturn 3
Only because we finally got to see Farrah’s boobies!!
I noticed a few other people said it already, but Serenity is definitely one of the best “space” movies out there!
Serenity FTW.
space balls
Star Wars, when I was younger (in the 90’s) I used to think it was actually new. That’s how good it still looks today.
If it had been made, then I would have chosen the Red Dwarf movie.
Wall-E!
Blade Runner!
i’d have to go with Star Wars
My vote goes to… Alien!
I’m a total Star Wars freak, so just name any one of the six and I’ll take it.
Blade Runner
Star Wreck - In the Pirkinning
Usually not of fan of SciFi, but I loved Serenity (and firefly!)
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Space Balls, duh.
Amazon Women on the Moon
Starwars: Episode 4
Hands down, Return of the Jedi is the best ever!
Star Wars
2001: A Space Odyssey.
Could be both Space Balls and Event Horizon.. But I tend to Event Horizon because it’s more space horror.
Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks. Best action ever and it was three guys who did this for real.
WALL-E
Blade Runner
StarWars: VI - Return of the Jed-I
Star Wars V - The Empire Strikes Back
Darkest of them all
Oops - strike out my last post - wrong comment - should have been “2001″ Hands down.
nice hdd
I’m sorry Guys But “Blade Runner” beats them all hands down!!!
Forbidden Planet Classic Sci-Fi
I’d have to go with Apollo 13. Can’t beat history for inspiration, and Tom Hanks rarely disappoints.
Star Wars all the way
I would say Aliens
The original StarWars movie (Episode IV) is one of the greatest.
Lost In Space ( the original )
Only because it’s the only Sci Fi type movie I really ever watched.
I have to say I think Starship Troopers is the best space themed movie ever! I love the humor in it.
Space Balls
Spaceballs….you gotta have a sense of humor
Bladerunner
“Let the people have the air!”
Total Recall
No one mentioned Dracula 3000?? OK, so that one sucked.
Gotta be Alien. Nothing scared you like 1 second glimpses of that thing.
The Empire Stikes Back
i didn’t see anyone say the last starfighter!
Blue Harvest (Family Guy)
My favorite is probably spaceballs for the word games
Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back. Awesome.
Sunshine is my current fav.
aliens
One of my favorite the sage of alien
Dark Star - The Ultimate Cosmic Comedy
2001: A Space Odissey , rules them all!
Star Wars…any on of them….
Toss up between ST:First Contact or Serenity… love’em…
WAIT, Stargate: Continuum kicked it also. Yay!
Serinity
Space Balls all others are a joke!
Another vote for Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001. That movie sparked my imagination and put AI in a new perspective.
Hail Hal!
The planet of the apes Pt. 1,2,3,4,5
Blade Runner or Dune? Blade Runner. Dune should have been made by Jodorowsky.
Alien
2001! An awesome movie. Visually exciting but the underlying theme was just incredible. First viewed while under the influence of less than legal pharmaceuticals and when Dave went through that Star Gate—well!
Serenity for sure.
Star Wars of course…
Star Wars of course!
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Bladerunner
liquid sky, for being from another planet itself
Star Wars
Planet of the Apes
Flash Gordon (1980) (the one with the Queen soundtrack).
WALL-E
Forbidden Planet
Spaceballs!
Just 2 words, Star Wars !!!!
Star Wars: Empire strikes back
Honerable mention
Starship Troopers - There is more to this movie than people think there is.
