“The 12 Days AFTER Christmas” Giveaway: Day 6

December 31, 2008 by Dr. Macenstein
Filed under: Awesomeness, Free Stuff, contests

[Thank you, we have our winner. This contest is closed. Congratulations to faithful Macenstein reader RandomPerson]

On the Sixth Day After Christmas, Macenstein gave to you (or, more accurately, gave you a chance to win…) A 320GB OWC Mercury On-The-Go Oxford924 FireWire 800&400+USB2 5400RPM 8MB Cache Portable SATA 2.5″ based Storage Solution

“Huh?”

That’s a fancy way of saying “hard drive”, dummy! And a big one too (at least storage-wise - at 320 GB!). Physically, it’s actually quite small and fits easily in your laptop bag inside its included carrying case. I have 2 of these, and I love them – perfect for running Time Machine on my MacBook Pro.

OWC 320 GB mercury drive
Above: Palm-sized, FireWire 400/800, and USB 2 connections, a cool carrying case and cables included! What more could you want?

Finally! Now you have no excuse not to back up your laptop (you know you’re not doing it).

The OWC Mercury On-The-Go FireWire 800/400 + USB 2.0 Portable Kit packs an incredible punch into a 3″Wx5.5″Lx1″H 11 ounce package!

If you’re looking for one of the most compatible mass storage solutions made, look no further! The OWC Mercury On-The-Go drive is all you’ll need! Packing a one-two punch of super fast FireWire 800 and USB 2.0, the OWC Mercury On-The-Go has what it takes to truly work cross platform.

The OWC Mercury On-The-Go keeps everything running silent while still keeping your drive cool with a built in aluminum heatsink underneath the hard drive, and passthrough cooling vents on the top of the case.

The OWC Mercury On-The-Go drive uses the latest Oxford chipset, the 924, for both FireWire 800/400 and USB 2.0. Designed to work with SATA hard drives, this chipset is the latest evolution of the best performing FireWire chipsets on the market.

FireWire/1394 makes it easy, OWC Mercury makes it faster! With transfer rates of up to 800mbs, plug and play connection, and professional level FireWire software, you will not go wrong with an OWC Mercury FireWire Drive.

To enter: Since the Mercury On-The-Go is all about space (both storage, and not physically taking up much), leave us a comment telling us what you think is the best Sci-Fi Space movie ever. Winners will be picked randomly 7 days later and notified (kind of like in The Ring, only with less killing… we hope). Open to all readers world-wide. Good luck, and thanks for reading Macenstein! (Oh, and be sure to enter ALL our “12 Days AFTER Christmas” Giveaways!)
Please note: Comments may take a while to show up, please do not double-post. Thanks!

  94. The original Star Wars (Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi) are my favorite Sci-Fi movies of all time as they not only got me hooked on both practical and fictional science but also helped push me into pursuing a career in animation and visual effects. I still recall sitting in a cardboard box with my little brother pretending it was the Millennium Falcon with us blasting our way through a fleet of Star Destroyers :-)

  110. It’s difficult to say “best” without a frame of reference.

In some respects, I’d suggest Forbidden Planet as the best, if only because it laid the groundwork for almost everything that followed.

Sort of a space movie, and “best” in a skewed way is Lifeforce. After all, how can a movie with naked-babe-vampires from space turning London into zombies (including Patrick Stewart) be anything BUT extraordinary?

2001 — clearly amazing. Serenity — great fun. The Santa Claus Conquers the Martians — even the title rocks. Pitch Black — unexpectedly enjoyable. Close Encounters and ET — made aliens friendly again and even Mars Attacks! couldn’t take that away.

But the film that has sparked more imaginations and built the modern perception of the genre is clearly Star Wars (retronymed as Episode IV). So, I’d have to place my vote there.

  248. OK, so we know Spaceballs rocked; H2G2 did a good job with a great set of stories; 2001 set the bar; and Star Trek movies outlasted the series. Gotta like The Fifth Element: Bruce Willis shootin’ up spaceships and dumb space bad guys. Can’t forget Milla Jovovich… what’s not to like? Still, Star Wars movies added tremendously realistic CG and character development to the genre so Star Wars!

  264. The best sci-fi movie is, in my opinion Wall-E. It has it all; robots, romance, spaceships, music, explosions, satire, depth, accessibility, and, above all, APPLE REFERENCES!!! Wall-E has an iPod, makes the Mac boot chime, and Pixar had Jony Ive help design Eve. In fact, it’s the film Wall-E that got me to, eventually, switch to Mac. However, that’s a story for another time…. Thanks for the opportunity to win this hard drive, Doc!

  420. I’m going to have to agree with some other commenters and say the original Star Wars (aka Episode IV), if only because it really brought sci-fi movies into the mainstream movie-goer consciousness. It’s not my favorite sci-fi movie of all time, but its positive impact on the sci-fi genre - particularly of the action-packed variety - cannot be denied.

My personal favorite is probably Serenity, but I’m a Browncoat through and through.

One of my favorite (just for giggles) sci-fi movies is Galaxy Quest! If anything just because it makes fun of Star Trek so well. And everyone loves a good parody.

So Star Wars, the original, unedited, unrevisionist history, so George can sleep better at night, is the best. And keep up the great work Mac. Oh and happy New Year.

  580. I have to agree that the original Star Wars Trilogy raised the bar for Space Sci-Fi. I do love Serenity, Star Trek, 2001, 2010, etc…The list goes on and on. I joked with my wife about Jason X and LMAO’d when I saw it listed. Anyway I have to commit myself to Star Wars FTW!

  604. I want to say Blade Runner, but it’s really more like a sci-fi thriller cop movie, nothing particular “space” about it.

So I’ll go with 2001 on the “high-art, makes you think and sticks in your head for life” choice, and the Htichhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy on the fun comedy end of the spectrum. (I’m talking about the 1981 BBC miniseries, not the more recent remake which could have been awesome, but toooooootally blew it and strayed too far from the books in both plot details and tone)

Plus, I could really use that drive! My Macboo Pro’s boot drive is a 320GB, so this external 320GB would make the perfect backup drive.

    Distopian Future
Blade Runner the Final Cut (preferably blu-ray version)
    Brave New World
(tho not really sci fi, it was in the set in the future when i was written) 1984
    Gattica
    Soylent Green
    The Omega Man
    Planet of the Apes (original)
    THX-11-38
(and tho this is sort of not distopian as it’s originally based off Shakespeare’s’ The Tempest) Forbidden Planet

Still hard to beat. Precise science, great art. The big questions put in a mythical way, without the religious crap, but with lots of spirituality, this is what SciFi is ought to be.

  936. This is a tough one and while I agree serenity rocks, it was the 2 hour end of a show cancelled before it’s time I miss fire fly. The same with the star trek series, bsg, SG1 and sgA. I’m surprised no one brought up space 1999 ( those shuttles are about ten years beyond what we can do) or something a bit darker like space above and beyond. so for a true sci-fi movie….lets go with the day the earth stood still though i could name dozens others just as good

1014. Tough choice. Either 2001 or Apollo 13.

2001 was great, and was enjoyed equally with or without dropping acid. Seeing it in CinemaScope should be a Constitutional Right.

But I choose Apollo 13, easily the best non-documentary depiction of real-life space travel. Both the number and size of the bolts and rivets holding that tin can together probably had anyone under thirty thinking this was Steam Punk set design. Some parts were a little slick, but it was very true to the look and feel of the time.

Seeing Mattingly’s (Gary Sinise) real-life simulation test of the electrical system was fantastic. There was no virtual reality in 1970. Only reality. And watching these guys calculate burn times and flight path adjustments with slide rules and pencils was awe inspiring. Most people today can’t balance their checkbook without Quicken or Excel.

Watch the Discovery Channel’s “When We Left Earth” series for the real bone-chilling stories of what all these guys did. They were freakin’ crazy. http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/nasa/programs/programs.html

    Honorable mention: Saturn 3
