Review: Contour Design’s Messenger Bag for MacBook and MacBook Pro
In part 45 of our ongoing search for the perfect laptop bag, we find ourselves holding Contour Design’s leather messenger bag – and we are pleased.
Contour’s Messenger bag is one of the more stylish attempts at a laptop bag we’ve seen, and this can be either a good or bad thing, depending on your tastes. Personally I view it as a good thing, although I had a couple guys (ironically, some of the least manly guys I know) say “Nice purse”. However, I am secure enough in my masculinity (and in their lack there of) that I didn’t mind. I got the brown model, although it is also available in black – maybe that was the problem. The bag looks cool. It’s a very nice mixture of materials, with a leather and canvas exterior, and a cushioned, lined interior with an eye-catching checker-board print, and I can’t wait for Read more

Apple’s girliest computer just got girlier
Filed under: Apple Fanboyism, Awesomeness, MacBook, Mods, design
Awww…. This is just adorable. At least as long as you don’t realize that there’s a bite out of that Apple, so she’s about 3 seconds from collapsing unconscious on the floor in a house with 7 guys.
This clever mod is the work of flickr user LübeckerJung‘
s girlfriend who made the design herself:
I found the artwork via google image search. She was part of the DVD-cover of Disneys Snow White. A little Illustrator here and a little Photoshop there and then i finally printed it at my local copyshop on a adhesive foil. “

Scooter users heart their Macs
Faithful Macenstein reader Eric from the Chicago Scooter Club (yes, it exists) ran a poll on their site about their member’s computer preference, and it looks like scooter owners prefer Macs over PCs by a factor of nearly 2 to 1! I’m not sure whether to be proud about that or not, but since scooters and geeks go hand in hand, I think we’ll take this as a win. Mac users made up 60% of the results, versus 31% for PC users, 6% using Linux, and 3% claiming they use “other”. Of course, those claiming “other” should really just go ahead and stuff themselves into a locker.
I have tiny balls! (Thanks to Magnifique!)
Fans of custom OS themes rejoice! Magnifique is here!
OK, so maybe shrinking those jolly, candy-like buttons wasn’t my FIRST gripe with the Leopard interface, but it’s nice to have a choice, isn’t it?
Magnifique is a free app that lets you view and install a range of themes in their library, or make your own. Have you always wanted black windows (preferably with hard to read text?) Well, now you can!
As you can see, it also changes theme colors across applications as well as the Finder. And reverting back to the default theme is a breeze. So, assuming this isn’t Spyware, it’s pretty sweet. You can download it here.

Woz caught “Segway Flirting”
Filed under: Apple Fanboyism, Awesomeness, Slow News Day
Faithful Macenstein reader Chris Griffith spotted Woz out and about in the Grove in Los Angeles yesterday filming something or other along with 20 of his fellow Segway buddies. Looks like Woz might be cashing in on some of that Dancing With The Stars fame. I mean, check out the arse on that gal he’s shmoozing! Easily the best I’ve seen on any Segway rider. Go Woz, GO!
Woz signs a hackintosh Dell netbook – doesn’t like red
Matthew Smith ran into Steve “Three Left Feet” Wozniak the other day, and just happened to have his hacked Dell mini 9 running Leopard and sharpie with him. The results are magical.
Got to briefly meet Steve Wozniak as he was doing some press for Dancing with the Stars. I showed him my Dell Mini 9 with OS X Leopard installed on it (and an Apple sticker sloppily applied over the Dell logo.
He said, “Oh my god, that is so COOL!”And: “Is that really the color you wanted?”
Then he graciously signed it. I then ran away and giggled for about 45 minutes.

Contest: WWDC invite Wurdle
THANK YOU< WE HAVE A WINNER, and it is DAVE with the word "HAYMAKER"! Congrats Dave!
Attention Wurdle fans! We took at look at the new WWDC invitation Apple just put out, and the SECOND thing that popped into our head was, “Wow, that looks kinda like Wurdle!” So to that end, we thought it would be interesting to put out a challenge… What is the longest “Wurdle-style” word you can make from the WWDC invite? If you are not familiar with Wurdle, the object is to “draw” a word path from letter to letter, trying to make the longest word possible. Your finger can move in any direction, so long as the letters are touching and have not already been used. (See our “Mayor” example above).
Winner will get a $20 iTunes gift card (US only).
In the very likely event of a tie, we will use Scrabble point values to determine a winner. If there is still a tie, um, well, the first person who posted the longest of the tied word wins. And NO, you CANNOT use “MAYOR”.
Contest ends April 1st.
Good luck!
Apple flooding the App store with more useless Apps
Filed under: Hacks, Humor, Slow News Day, design, iPhone
To date, Apple’s iPhone apps have been fairly solid efforts, although the same cannot be said for the majority of 3rd party iPhone apps out there. However, it looks like Apple has decided to jump on the “bloatware” bandwagon. Check out this invite for the WWDC.
Not only is Apple apparently using a jalbroken iPhone to hide the app names, but it looks like they plan on releasing no fewer than THREE new applications for the letters “E” and “R”. I’ll admit I’m anxious to test them out, but three just seems like money grubbing. Why aren’t they taking their own advice, and allowing users to purchase additional E’s from within the E app itself (assuming they like it)? Given that iPhone screen real estate is at a premium, this just seems like poor design. Boo Apple! Boo!

Hey, those apps don’t have labels! Apple must have WinterBoard installed on page 3!
MacHeist 3 Bundle rears its beautiful, cheap head
MacHeist 3 has arrived, and for the first time the 12 app bundle promises a $627 value for the low low price of $39. Whether you’re interested in cooking a meal, or playing the best puzzle game of last year, or selling off an old item on Ebay, the MacHeist bundle has you covered.
I find these mega software bundles are often hit or miss, but MacHeist 3 has something going for it that for me makes it extra sweet – the awesome World of Goo ($20). I reviewed WOG last year, and it’s still one of the few games I still play every couple weeks. Also on the list are:
iSale $39.95 – eBay online auction tool
Picturesque $34.95 – add cool effects to your web images
SousChef $30.00 – Digital Cooking Assistant
PhoneView $19.95 – Adds access to your iPhone’s Notes, SMS logs, your call history, disk storage, and more
LittleSnapper $39.00 – Easily grab and share images
Acorn $49.95 – Easy to use photo editor
Kinemac $299.00 - Create Real time, professional 3D animation
WireTap Studio $69.00 – record and edit audio o your Mac
and
Big Bang Board Games $24.95 – 7 classic board games
As always, the bundle also features a few “unlockable apps” which are added to the bundle when certain sales goals are hit. This year’s unlockabels are:
BoixTV $199 – “TV studio in a box,” ideal for recording podcasts, seminars, and other events
The Hit List $69.95 – powerful but easy to use task manager
Espresso $80 - stylish new new web editor
I’m going to go out on a limb and say odds are all three of these apps are likely to be added to the bundle, as I believe traditionally all apps have been unlocked in previous MacHeist bundles. 25% of all sales go to charity, and if you order the bundle by clicking on THIS LINK, you will be giving to the greatest charity of all – Macenstein.
