@Norm Gilbert: No way I am buying the SlingBox product now. Forget about the app, I dont even need Slingbox's product after reading this. I got friends on Sprint and Verizon getting streaming TV over 3G. I am speaking with my wallet.

I was EXTREMELY disappointed to find out that the iPhone app (cool as it might be) would cost me another 30 bucks. Already payed a LOT for the SlingBox, and it's not like the Windows of Mac Software were really good and stable.

My advice is: do NOT buy a Slingbox, in the end it costs a whole lot more than it's worth. :(

@Dean:

No SlingPlayer app for iPhone connects directly to a Slingbox. You must own a Slingbox that connects to your cable STB, antenna, satellite, FiOS, etc. It is a location shifter for watching your own TV signal.

doc — were you watching the video through your own home network, or did you use the port forwarding and test the quality from outside your own network?

i only ask because i have a slingbox and i know that the quality when you run it in your own network is *considerably better* than when you run it through "the internet".

i have hard enough time wrapping my head around the thought of buying an app for my phone that only does the exact same thing that the slingplayer on my laptop does... only the laptop version is free.

you're rating the app itself, i know, but my main question — knowing that you can only use it on wifi — is it worth buying? $30 is a lot of dollars especially when the laptop version is free.

Does Sling Player for the iPhone require that the computer at home be up and running for remote access? I usually shut down when I'm away from home.

@gillham
SlingPlayer for iPhone does require an account, which is no issue really as all it does is make connecting easier. You are still are connecting to the Slingbox directly as all the account does is locate your Slingbox. I suggest you try the 2.0 version for Windows as it blows away the 1.0.x version. I can't wait until the Mac version of 2.0 comes out. I run 2.0 on an ASUS Netbook and the picture quality and ease of use is stunning on WiFi and pretty decent on 3G.

@DOC
SlingPlayer for BB is relatively new and does not work on any BB on Verizon as they do not run the latest OS that is required. The iPhone version is much better than the Windows Mobile version I own, other than the 3G issue that is.

I have been using the SlingPlayer Mobile on my iPhone while connected to a CradlePoint PHS300 router and USB 727 3G modem I own, works great in the car! So I have 3G.

Does Sling Player for iPhone require an account with Sling like the Windows 2.x software does? I use a Mac and Windows 1.x software which allows me to connect directly to my Sling Box without creating an unneeded account on Sling's site. None of the review sites have mentioned whether Sling Player for iPhone needs an account or not. Can you tell me? What about some screen shots of the setup page as well?

The class action lawsuits against AT&T are coming. Do NOT buy this application until and unless it can be used over a 3G network. It is USELESS as it is now, usable only via wi-fi.

To add insult to injury, SlingMedia is expecting users of their SlingBoxes to fork over hundreds of dollars to get a new SlingBox that doesn't really do anything their old box can't do. They just have nefarious plans to CRIPPLE their old boxes to FORCE users to upgrade.

It's a greedy money grab and I hope the market sees through the BS and resoundingly rejects these products. When Sling's source of revenue dries up, maybe they will do a better job of listening to their customers and not to AT&T.

The only way users can vote is with their dollars - do not reward SlingMedia for their greed and stupidity in capitulating to AT&T.

DO NOY BUY SLING MEDIA PRODUCTS!

I was considering buying the SlingBox Pro HD but this announcement has swayed me from the purchase due to the 3G restriction for iPhone 3G users. Also I dislike that SlingMedia expects their customers to fork over another $29.99 CAD to get SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone 3G after already spending $379.99 CAD for the SlingBox. To entice more customers to buy their products SlingMedia shouldn't be charging for SlingPlayer Mobile and they should be fare in allowing all SlingPlayer Mobile apps to access 3G, not just Windows Mobile, Blackberry OS, Palm OS and Symbian OS.
