Steve Jobs buys Marvel : Adamantium MacBook imminent

Hey, I can dream, can’t I?

Looks like we’ll be seeing unibody adamantium MacBook in a matter months, as Disney (aka, Steve Jobs) has just bought Marvel Comics (home of the X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man…. all sort of big, beefy men, basically) for $4 Billion.

If I had $4 Billion I probably would have done the same thing, if for no other reason than to stop the upcoming Thor movie from being made. But given that Apple has more or less run out of sexy cat names for its OS versions, odds are the opportunities for cross-promotional synergy is what caught Steve’s eye.

I’d buy it.

  4. WTF. what’s wrong with Thor? Thor is my favorite comic book character. It’s probably the first comic book movie I’ve actually ever looked forward to

  10. He doesn’t own Disney, he is on the Board of Directors

“In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd which was spun off as Pixar Animation Studios. He remained CEO and majority shareholder until its acquisition by the Walt Disney Company in 2006. Jobs is currently a member of Walt Disney Company’s Board of Directors.”

  12. “Immanent”? Spell check much?

I’m with Carlo, I’ve always been a Shadowcat (back when she was Sprite and Ariel too) fan. And I’m not sure what your deal with Thor is.

  14. @ Dave,
Yeah, sorry about that. I actually DID spell check it, and “Immanent” came up as a perfectly crommulent word, and actually seems to mean about the same thing as “Imminent” - I guess I was sloppy there. You have bested me, sir.

  16. For starters Steve does not OWN Disney. He is the SINGLE largest shareholder of the corporation. After disney bought PIXAR, steve’s share’s in disney became quite large. He has alot of pull there, that’s for sure.
He is not the LARGEST share hold, he is the SINGLE LARGEST shareholder. Their is a difference. Since Disney is a corporation with shareholders, it is not owned by one person.

  18. For the literal-minded, I suspect that the Doc was being a little tongue-in-cheek with his headline. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t think that Steve Jobs sent $4 billion to Marvel via Paypal and bought the company. As he is on Disney’s board of directors, he probably had plenty of input into the decision.

But, Doc, what’s wrong with Thor? He’s my favorite character from Norse mythology and did a fine job representing the Asgard against the Giants. Hooray for Thorsday!

  20. We still have Lynx, Cougar, and finally Lion which takes us through 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9, for a new naming scheme to start with OSX’s big OSX1 or OS 11 or whatever.

  22. Yeah, it’s definitely cromulent when you’re addressing The Pope. Perhaps you were suggesting the new adamantium MacBook would be divine.

Since the Doc was joking when he equated Disney with Jobs (the way serious journalists shamelessly equate Apple with Jobs), I’m not sure what the nitpicking is about.

  24. @GodzFire, we’ve already had Cougar. Version 10.1 Puma.

  26. As of 1/16/2009 Disney Proxy Statement Steven P. Jobs owned 138,000,007 shares representing 7.4% of outstanding shares.

All other Board members together own 7.9% of Disney stock.

Jobs is the only individual who owns more than 5% of Disney.

And he is the only Board member who is, at his request, exempted from any compensation from the Walt Disney Company.

Hey, with 138 Million shares his dividend income alone is $48.3 Million a year.

  28. so jobs doesn’t make any money at Disney and he makes $1 at Apple, where does he get his money? I always just assumed he made his money from Disney

  30. Dave-O, the Cougar is also known as puma, mountain lion, catamount, or panther.

Here’s an official list of OSX Cat Names:

    Version Codename
    1.0 Hera
    Public Beta Kodiak
    10.0 Cheetah
    10.1 Puma
    10.2 Jaguar
    10.3 Panther
    10.4 Tiger
    10.5 Leopard
    10.6 Snow Leopard

As such, the NAME Cougar has yet to be used.

  32. Speaking of spell check, there is a good program Spell Check Anywhere (SpellCheckAnywhere.Net) it adds spell check to all programs.

  34. “Cougar (Puma concolor), also known as puma, mountain lion, catamount, or panther…”
    [ via Wikipedia ]

Does that mean 10.1 and 10.3 were actually the same OS? Sounds like a secret Apple conspiracy to me…
