“The 12 Days AFTER Christmas” Giveaway: Day 4 – Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac
THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED. CONGRATULATIONS TO FAITHFUL MACESTEIN READER dlowe402.
Sure, we all love Apple and the ease of OS X, but sometimes there’s things you just can’t do on a Mac – like run the latest games, business software, and viruses. But who wants to go through all the trouble of partitioning their drive and rebooting into Boot Camp? When you HAVE to use Windows, you want to get in and out QUICK, and there’s nothing quicker than Parallels 5 for Mac. Optimized for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and boasting unmatched virtual machine performance, Parallels 5 lets you launch thousands of Windows apps directly from the Mac Dock. Best of all, Parallels lets you show as much or as little of the Windows interface as you like, so your friends won’t even know you’re running Windows, thus preserving your Mac Street Cred.
Choice is good. Not having to choose is even better.
Mac OS or Windows? Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac lets you seamlessly run Windows and Mac OS X side-by-side, drag-and-drop your files between operating systems, and run Windows software on your Apple computer without rebooting.* Run thousands of Windows programs faster on your Mac
* Enhanced! Install Windows XP, Vista or 7 in 3 easy steps
* Enhanced! Optimized for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
* New! Full support for Aero, including Flip 3D in Windows Vista and 7 & OpenGL 2.1
* New! OpenGL 2.1 support for Linux guest Operating Systems
* Enhanced! Parallels Compressor automatically reclaims hard disk space
* Enhanced! Intel VT-x2 virtualization technology drives maximum performance
* Enhanced! Unmatched virtual machine performance
* Enhanced! KVM paravirtualization for Linux gives unmatched performance
To enter: simply leave us a comment below saying something POSITIVE about Windows. Winner will be picked randomly 7 days later and notified (kind of like in The Ring, only with less killing… we hope). Open to all readers world-wide. Good luck, and thanks for reading Macenstein! (Oh, and be sure to enter ALL our “12 Days AFTER Christmas” Giveaways!)
Please note: Comments may take a while to show up, please do not double-post. Thanks!

I like Windows for only two things; as a Windows admin I need it to run Sharepoint and Windows admin stuff, such as DFS. Also Visio is a must at my company so I need Windows to run Visio. Other than that I run my MAC and love it.
If you look through windows, sometimes you see a nice sunset.
Windows 7 sucks less than prior versions.
Windows can be opened to let a cool breeze through.
Windows has seven letters.
Windows is a good working environment if you want to collaborate all over the world.
Solitaire
Windows is incredibly useful based on the number of applications available; my wife, an artist for a game studio, uses Windows at her work constantly, and the wide array available is breathtaking, especially compared to what’s available on the Mac.
Windows also has a great range of development tools available, including Visual Studio – the preeminent IDE on any platform.
Windows shows how great mac is.
I like the design of the new packaging :-p (no really I do!)
Windows can run IIS and allows for a much easier development environment for novice programmers.
Windows is still beign developed.
Windows 7 is more polished and Mac like than any windows before it, and some of the new features are actually useful to me personally.
windows makes good points in Apples “Buy a MAC” campaign. I mean….in their new Windows 7 advertisements “i thought of that” Plus, I can run windows only games when i need it too!
I’m POSITIVE Windows is an inferior OS…that’s what you meant right?
windows shows what os x is not supposed to be.
I love Windows, every day at work I use Windows and it reminds me why I have Macs at home.
Something POSITIVE about Windows.
(Am I taking the directions too literally?)
But seriously, Windows is great at running specialized programs that were written in some distant academic department to solve an esoteric problem and that will never be updated again, ever, much less ported to the Mac. Without Windows, I couldn’t have finished my dissertation.
Windows is a copy of MacOS so, somewhere, it has to have good things.
Windows is used for windows based programs that I have before I bought a Mac and now use them via bootcamp so i don’t need to purchase new programs.
Windows is only good because it plays Flight Simulator
aero is a cute UI, and sometimes might be useful!
Windows 7 supports the TRIM command for SSDs.
Windows 7 is like Mac OS… I have not seen a BSOD yet.
Windows keeps apple on its feet by continuously stealing its features making apple have to develop new ones. (I kid).
But competition is how new features are developed.
Windows 7 Starter is amazing if you don’t mind their default wallpaper. Stable, lots of apps and very Mac like. I’m writing this on an HP Mini 110 that I was going to Hackintosh and yet for some reason I have not. Windows is oddly compelling.
Windows can be shutdown in so many ways.
windows is good because it has ms paint
Thank you Windows for making Mac look so good!
In all seriousness, Active Directory is the best enterprise class directory system out there. It’s got all the features you need, scales well, while still being usable by idiots.
Windows encourages me to go running back to my mac in the evening which is a good thing
Windows is Nice…. mmm no…
Windows = Modern Warfare 2
Windows is a great corporate OS, and is a joy to use when adequately cared for.
WINDOWS is one of the greatest operating Systems ever! It makes things you can’t imagine. There is more Software for WINDOWS than for OS X, for example viruses, trojan horses etc.!
There is still a need for Windows…sometimes
Office for Mac doesn’t support RTL languages such as Hebrew while Office for Windows does. This means that even while I’m a hardcore Mac user I’m still forced to run a VM with Office in my Mac so that I can write Hebrew documents.
playing games
cool, new windows=more innovation in Mac
WINDOWS ‘r PANES!
Windows is only good for games!
say something POSITIVE about windows? You want us to do WHAT? You will never hear me utter such a thing!
*unless of course it is required to win something, in which case…*
1. it is the only way to run Flight Simulator X Acceleration
2. Windows is in effect similar to a government stimulus package- for the computer industry. Take this example: Man buys new PC. A year Passes. Man sees new version of Windows. Microsoft designs it so that it will require a new PC. Man realises that he needs a new computer to run the new version of windows. man goes to computer store and buys a new PC. Computer store buy the 300 different components required to build the new PC – and then charges 3x the amount that it cost to build. A year passes. Man sees new version of windows. etc. etc.
i.e windows + inbuilt obsolescence + unsuspecting man = a lifelong PC industry
In this way windows users continue to keep many computer stores, business, manufacturers etc. etc. (and Microsoft) in operation. – that is until the rest of the windows world wakes up to the con that is Microsoft/Windows.
In these times of chrisis, Windows gives work to a lot of computer engineers.
Windows allows me to make a living as a pentesters.
Republic Commando and KOTOR II are only Windows compatible = so it’s great for games

Windows comes with Mine Sweeper!

Windows look better with a fresh coat of paint.
If I’m bored I’ll watch the defrag
Windows lets you use all the suckful korean websites that require activex controls!!!
Windows has contributed so much to computer culture … My favorite is the “blue screen of death.”
Windows are/is a new way to let undesired things (thieves, viruses) in.
Imagine a big cat, a Leopard for instance, there where your windows are/is. Nothing (thief, virus) would ever dare to enter.
BUT, don’t forget Windows are cheaper than wildcats.
Windows 7 looks great with all the blue and I especially like the window-snap-to-the-side feature.

And a really positive thing about windows is that they take good time blacklist keys to the operating system.
It’s ALL about the apps after all. Windows does have a few apps I need that OSX doesn’t. ArcGIS for one.
I develop custom test equipment and Windows 7 removes the 3GB memory limit and is allowed by my IT department on a limited basis.
Windows has failed so much on me that it encouraged me to get a mac.
I do prefer XP when I have to use windows.

Windows gives talentless hacks an operating system to work within and showcase their lack of skills.
windows is something that’s for sure!

Windows used to be my hobby: I spent many hours (and nights) tweaking and tuning for the best performance. It was a sport to keep the system smoothly running (uptime > 40 days).

Windows is the only way I can take, much less pass, my online stats class.

Two words: gaming platform.
Windows XP doesn’t do the BSOD as much as it used to 5 years ago. It used to be once a week. Now it’s more like once a month.
Windows resides quietly on my Mac without interfering and ready when I need it (which sometimes happens) …

Windows is a great tool. Just like a slegdehammer, it must be used carefully and for the right application. Otherwise you end up with blisters and holes in your walls.

I like the fact that just hovering over an application in the menu bar makes everything else transparent. Also I like how the windows snap to the sides of the screen. OS X should add these features.

I am old enough (can’t believe I just said that) to remember Windows (as well as Apple and Macs… and Commodore 64 and TRS-80 and VIC-20… please put me out of my misery…) from the beginning . I actually know how to make scripts for DOS which is very powerful for modifying large number of files (I realize that Unix can do the same, but I haven’t taken a dip in that pool yet). Wait, is that still Windows…? At least Windows XP still has a DOS command.
Windows is good and I need it to complement OS X, particularly for certain softwares to run on my Mac.
Well, the games.
BTW, I like Vista than 7
Well, at least glad some friends still use it so I can win some favours by giving tech support when their PCs ’stop working’.
Windows 7 isn’t going to have any of the problems Windows Vista had!!!
Windows is the most popular OS out there because it rocks.
Windows has Pinball (at XP)
Windows 7 does not force you to use Outlook Express

Windows allows me to run Sound Forge, and that is the best audio editing software out there. I love video editing software and DAWs on OS X, but Sound Forge is the one thing I could not replace with a Mac program.

Except for Solidworks and AutoCAD.
Windows, from version to version, continues to add a whole bunch of new useful technologies under the hood, that although many people are unaware of them, they get to enjoy their outcomes. Example: BitLocker and BitLockerToGo in windows 7 that allows drive encryption from local to usb drives.
Using Parallels 4 right now and love it!
All windows are great for my nieces. I have 5 nieces and ever since I’ve gotten my own computer back in 2003, it has been easy for them to operate windows over mac. I preferably love mac, but they love windows. Parallels would save a lot of time downloading and having to reinstall windows to partition the disk so my nieces can install new games on the computer. Please pick me and help me out!
I use Micro$oft Project at work and think it’s the bees knees. Would love to use it at home!

Windows 7 is why everyone runs Windows XP
I occasionally have to run Windows XP to participate in WebEx conferences (with an unnamed corporation that has broken WebEx for Mac in their zeal to use scripts that make WebEx “easier” for hapless Windows users. Argh!
Windows is great for those who like to delve into the inner workings of the registry and arcane error msgs. I am excited to see if things are really improved in windows 7. (funny, I remember the big hooplah over mac os “System 7″ coming out almost 20 years ago!
)

Somebody called Solitaire, but I say Windows is good for solidarity. Imagine spending all your nice family time together trying to figure out how your PC doesn’t work. Yay! And Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is on Windows. Thank God I have a PS3.
While now a total Mac fan I will alway be impressed by the way Windows has managed to maintain it’s long history of backwards compatibility with software and hardware given the unfathomable sea of possible combinations out there.

Windows reminds me that no matter how badly I screw up, there are still people out there who will stand behind me for no good reason.
Windows allows us to temporarily run applications that haven’t been released for the Mac yet.
