“The 12 Days AFTER Christmas” Giveaway: Day 13 – Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac

This contest is closed. Congrats to faithful Macenstein reader Chad.

On the Thirteeth Day After Christmas, Macenstein gave to you (or, more accurately, gave you a chance to win…) Your very own copy of Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac!

Sure, we all love Apple and the ease of OS X, but sometimes there’s things you just can’t do on a Mac – like run the latest games, business software, and viruses. But who wants to go through all the trouble of partitioning their drive and rebooting into Boot Camp? When you HAVE to use Windows, you want to get in and out QUICK, and there’s nothing quicker than Parallels 5 for Mac. Optimized for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and boasting unmatched virtual machine performance, Parallels 5 lets you launch thousands of Windows apps directly from the Mac Dock. Best of all, Parallels lets you show as much or as little of the Windows interface as you like, so your friends won’t even know you’re running Windows, thus preserving your Mac Street Cred.

Choice is good. Not having to choose is even better.
Mac OS or Windows? Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac lets you seamlessly run Windows and Mac OS X side-by-side, drag-and-drop your files between operating systems, and run Windows software on your Apple computer without rebooting.

* Run thousands of Windows programs faster on your Mac
* Enhanced! Install Windows XP, Vista or 7 in 3 easy steps
* Enhanced! Optimized for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
* New! Full support for Aero, including Flip 3D in Windows Vista and 7 & OpenGL 2.1
* New! OpenGL 2.1 support for Linux guest Operating Systems
* Enhanced! Parallels Compressor automatically reclaims hard disk space
* Enhanced! Intel VT-x2 virtualization technology drives maximum performance
* Enhanced! Unmatched virtual machine performance
* Enhanced! KVM paravirtualization for Linux gives unmatched performance

To enter:Among Mac users there is a perception that Windows is… um… somewhat less than secure. But how deserved is that reputation? To enter, leave us a comment telling us have you or anyone you personally know ever lost data to a Windows virus? Winner will be picked randomly 7 days later and notified (kind of like in The Ring, only with less killing… we hope). Open to all readers world-wide. Good luck, and thanks for reading Macenstein! (Oh, and be sure to enter ALL our “12 Days AFTER Christmas” Giveaways!)
Please note: Comments may take a while to show up, please do not double-post. Thanks!

yeah, my friend had to go in and get around all this nonsense on his pc–something about taking apart his computer and still not remedying the problem.

Yes. Numerous times at work. Whole computers had to be reimaged. I worked there for 12 years, so I don’t remember how many, but I would say between 8 to 10 in our dept alone. And we were only 25-29 users. Never happened with our Mac’s. :)

My husband hasn’t lost data, but has had to do system restore 3 separate times because he has gotten viruses on his personal laptop from checking his work email from home. They won’t provide tech support from work for it because it’s his own laptop, even though he has to do it for his job. UGH!!! Luckily, we’ve been able to always back up his data to our external hard drive!

  23. imajoebob says:

I’ve never lost data, but I did have a very early virus that almost caused me to gas an entire network. It came in on a floppy, and infected every system on the LAN, and added itself to everything it touched, including more floppies. You couldn’t access the user files without connecting via Windows (DOS, technically) which would immediately reinfect that computer and block you from disinfecting the server files.

It was only through the generosity of a nice person at McAfee, who offered me a piece of proprietary, barely beta software (you wouldn’t believe the EULA – it basically said it was illegal to use it for anything) that I was able to clean the server files and the propagate the fix out to the LAN. I was told this was the first time they had this kind of tool. And they did it for free! Guess which AV my network ran for the next 10 years.

  33. criest says:

Ok… Personally, my pc has been attacked by virus so many times. last time, i found that my video editing project file that i have been working on it for 1 month, suddenly disappeared. I couldn’t find it anywhere in my pc. I don’t know where was it. The worst thing was i didn’t have the backup for that file. After some investigation, finally i have found that my antivirus software has deleted my video editing file nicely and properly. I really appreciate my antivirus because it deleted my important file because of the virus.
That project is actually for my girl friend b’day, but it’d really suck by the virus attacking. Finally, i didn’t give that project as a gift to my girlfriend. really really sucks.

Can you imagine that you have been working on the project that takes 1 month time and suddenly it is disappeared by your own antivirus software??

But from now on, i have made more than 2 backups for my important files =D
Remember to backup your file or PLEASE use MAC !!! haha

    Thank you !!
