I honestly can’t tell if this is cool or not

Every once in a while I see something that I can’t tell whether I want it because it’s cool, or just because I want everything.

Behold the upcoming Desk Phone Dock for iPhone, a new iPhone dock that promises to turn your iPhone into… a landline?

That’s right, if you’re looking for a way to charge your iPhone AND remove all of its portability, this might be the accessory for you.

Actually all kidding aside this could be pretty cool, as these days more and more people like the idea of dropping their landlines in favor of the mobile phones, yet talking for extended periods of time on the smaller handsets can be painful, and forget about trying to do the “hold the phone with the shoulder and type” thing. The Desk Dock for IPhone could solve those problems, while adding two stereo speakers, microphone, volume control, instant Mute, USB and AC power dual sources.

Of course you could just use the earbuds you already have for free, but where’s the geek factor in that?

Almost cool. If it were a wireless phone then it might be cool. I usually use a Bluetooth headset with my iPhone. That’s more convenient than a wired landline phone. However, I have to applaud them for them effort.

I think it’s a cool idea; it’s on the retro side of cool but an interesting design. I never get how people can drop their landlines – Mobile calls are still way more pricey and if you get patchy coverage at home (many people do) then you gain nothing. I pay £10 a month for my landline and get unlimited calls 24/7. I pay over £50 a month for my iPhone (includes a bunch of roaming bolt ons and text upgrades) and still end up using more than my free minutes. If I used my mobile all the time I’d be flat broke…..

A few months ago I saw a cool idea from VTech (though I don’t know if they’re the only ones with such a product). They have multi-handset cordless home phone systems that connect to your cell phone via Bluetooth. That way, you have the convenience of a cordless home phone, but your calls go in/out through your cell phone instead of a separate landline. Here are the VTech products which do that:
