Ahh… but can he make Ghidorah disappear?

Out of all the careers in the world, I would assume a Magician has got to be one of the least rewarding (ranking just above writing for a Mac blog). Even if you’re really good, odds are you won’t make any money and die alone obscurity (or the Poconos). I can’t tell whether this guy is famous or not, and I lack the interest to Google him, but I DO know two things about him:

1 – He’s pretty good (not GREAT, but pretty good)
2 – He’s rich enough to afford an iPad and a video camera.

So ladies, snap him up before he hits the big time and gets as famous as his apparently less obscure friend DiaGo (who is also pretty obscure, at least outside of Japan).

I guess Buy.com didn’t get the memo

Given that Walmart is selling brand new 16 GB iPhone 3G S’s for $97, I can’t help but think Buy.com is being a little optimistic by setting a “5 per customer” limit on these refurbished 8GB iPhone 3G’s for $400 (although this would certainly bode well for me selling my 3Gs on eBay in a month…).

AT&T only?

Apple – The most romantic OS on the planet

Everyone knows the French are the most romantic people on the planet. After all, they have a 1063 ft erection in the middle of their capital (Ba dum bum!). Well, faithful Macenstein reader Jordan sent us a link to a love song by French singing sensation Calogero which not only makes heavy use of Mac imagery in the video, but the song itself is called “Pomme C”, or “Apple C”, which to all you johnny come latelys is what they Command Key used to be called on old Macs (or for extra Mac geek street cred, you could call it the “open-Apple key”).

Actually, I can’t really guarantee Calogero is an actual “singing sensation” – I couldn’t get a straight answer as to what his English-singing counterpart might be, but his record company seems to have thrown a decent chunk of change into the production of his video, so I’ll assume he’s more popular than Jerry Lewis. Plus anyone who remembers the Apple Key is likely a long time Mac users, so he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Be sure to look for the shout out to QuickTime. (English translation of the lyrics below, courtesy of Jordan).

Pomme C (Apple C) by Calogero
I have her picture.
I have her email.
Her heart at the tip of the keyboard.

I have her face.
And her envy.
Without ever having touched it.
Must I save it?
Or just abandon it?

Apple, it’s a man and a woman.
And it’s all a program.
An artificial sky.
Apple, who lights me up and leaves me.
We love too quickly.
Our lives are virtual.

She writes me.
But my screen formats the feelings.

But I imagine that a machine
Could only pretend.
My goddess.
She is not really real.
A little love, copied and pasted
A little love, apple c.
A little love downloaded.
A little love to save, to save.
But love is not virtual.
Or should I just abandon it?

Steve Jobs is delusional

Steve Jobs made a pretty bold claim when he responded to Bryan Webster’s eloquently written question abut the upcoming WWDC:

Wow. Them’s fightin’ words to be sure, and they certainly gave ME a chill when I first read them. I immediately had visions of a super-charged, video game playing Apple TV/DVR, fully open to developers, and an iPhone 4 with video chat and condom dispenser… Truly this WWDC is NOT going to disappoint!

But then I remembered something… history has an odd way of repeating itself. Let’s take a quick look at how the most faithful of faithful Mac addicts have reacted to the past couple WWDC announcements (via Mac Rumors).

Ouch. And we’re their biggest supporters! When you see how angry we Mac users get when Apple announces its latest technology, you wonder why Jobs and company even bother (of course a quick look at Apple’s stock price suggests some theories). And remember, all that anger is largely based on our own self-inflated expectations, based on rumors and wishful thinking. THIS year we actually have the man himself whipping us into a frothing, foaming frenzy of anticipation!

So, will this year’s WWDC disappoint? Yes. Yes it will. But, before you rush off to leave scathing comments on Mac Rumors this year, just remember, so did all the other WWDC’s, and yet ultimately you came to appreciate what Apple had accomplished, and odds are you’ve spoken with your wallets many times over. Do you own a MacBook? An iPod? An iPhone? An Apple TV? An iPad? As someone who owns (a couple of) all of the above, and who is usually underwhelmed by Apple’s keynotes, I can honestly say that an underwhelming Apple event is still 100 times better than the most exciting Microsoft event.

Of course, the only problem is Microsoft is no longer Apple’s competition – it’s Google, and they’ve got quite a lot of creative people over there. As Bryan said, Google is “taking the piss”. (Where the hell did THAT saying come from?) 2010 will be the first WWDC where Apple has really had to respond to the competition, so it should be pretty interesting.

And yes, my expectations are high, and yes, I am ready to be let down, and yes, I am ready to buy whatever Apple announces.

Wuss!

Well, that’s ONE way to slow down iPad demand

If Apple’s looking for a way to slow down demand for its perpetually out-of-stock iPad, they need look no further than the iDress and iTee, by the iClothing fashion company. I can’t imagine anyone wanting an iPad after seeing these.

Awww.. she could probably charge it from her smile alone…

If you’re anything like me, odds are you’re worried about being able to charge your iPhone once the world ends via either a robot or zombie invasion. After the apocalypse, convenient access to AC power is likely going to be scarce, which is why I was excited to try out the Novothink Surge solar power iPhone charger/case. Read more

Screenshots of AutoCad for Mac surface – reportedly “Works like $#!%”

Our good friends over at TheAppleLounge have received some screenshots of a beta of AutoCad running on the Mac.

According to the user, the software “va una chiavica”, which loosely translates to “works like shit”. But it’s a very very early beta, so we predict by next month it will have progressed to working like crap.

[UPDATED] Words with Friends tech support appears to suck

Public embarrassment and ridicule – the last hope of a desperate man.

words with friends tech support sucks

Many of my faithful readers know that I am a self-confessed “Words with Friends addict, having given the game my first and only “10 out of 10″ review for a game. I invited all of you to get the game and then come beat me (username Dr Macenstein) – and the majority of you did just that, I’m sad to say (there’s even a Facebook group dedicated to beating me). However, about a week ago upon launching the game I was greeted with an error message saying there was a problem with one of my games, and it was being repaired. Well, nearly 7 days later, a neglected support request and 3 unanswered e-mails to tech support, I feel I am out of civil options in dealing with NewToy, the makers of the game. I feel I must resort to attempting to embarrass them into responding. So here goes. Guys, please get your shit together and help out poor old support request 47942. I’ve already gotten through the shakes and sweats from Words With Friends withdrawal thanks to large amounts of Flight Control, but my despair has turned to a mighty, geeky rage! I bought this game TWICE, and yet cannot play on either my iPhone or iPad until you fix the problem, whatever it is. I suppose I can try creating a new username and starting over, but I think I have about 40 people who are just about to beat me who will be crushed if I am forced to start a new account, so Please NewToy, help the Doc out.
