New MacBook Pros are the first ever laptop to offer a “Douple”-layer SuperDrive
While the new MacBook Pro updates seemingly offered no real surprises this morning, faithful Macenstein reader Kerry Brys noted that the 17-inch model is offering a “Douple”-layer SuperDrive.
Apple has not yet commented on the benefits, if any, of a douple-layer drive, but odds are this is some new hybrid between the current double-layer drives, and a new triple-layer drive format that has not yet been approved by the industry. This is not the first time Apple has adopted a new tech spec before gaining official approval. Back in 2003 Apple adopted the wireless 802.11g spec in its AirPort base stations before it gained IEEE approval, and had been selling them for some time when the official spec (which was slower than Apple thought) was approved.

You should never record heavy metal in doubly.

Could it be Apple’s naming for a Blu-Ray Drive?

That’s nothing. Apple thinks that italians and others european freaks deserve 256MB of video Ram less than you yankees…
256 MB instead of 512 on high end pros….
By phone they told me it’s a mistake made by the webmaster. Too many things to do for the web team this tuesday…

“Like Sony calls FireWire “iLink”?”
A marketing name for a marketing name? What was wrong with “FireWire”, I wonder?

couldn’t it be just a spelling mistake?

Look at storage in the right hand column, not that i want to strain your research a bit ;), but guess what! They all come with a double layer drive. It does appear that the drives are different, or they are firmware different, as the specs are not identical.

Go to your hardware supplier of choice & look for DVD recordable blanks labelled DVD+R DL.
These new disk blanks allow storage of 8.5Gb on a single side hence the name “Double Layer”.
The Mac Pro’s support burning to this media.
Christ, you guys are seriously out of touch, even an old fart like me knows this…

DVD+R DL is a recordable disk format supporting 8.5Gb storage on a single side via dual layers.
The fact that Mac’s can do this is a GOOD THING.
Cluestick deployed

bored2death, thanks for the cluestick, but you may need one yourself.
The point of the article was Apple’s uncorrected Type-O.
