The origin of Steve Jobs’ ego

March 12, 2008 by Dr. Macenstein

As much as the media (including us) likes to occasionally poke fun at the somewhat “enthusiastic” crowds at Macworld conventions, the crowds these days ain’t got nothing on the crowd that was on hand for Steve Jobs’ introduction of the original Macintosh back in 1984. This round of applause reportedly took close to 5 minutes to die down, and nearly brought Steve Jobs to tears.

  6. Brings back memories. That first Macintosh was a revelation, so groundbreaking. Yes, the Lisa preceded the Macintosh, but the Lisa was quite expensive and didn’t have the same aura.

  8. That’s too cool!

I actually have one of these machines. My brother works for a computer recyling non-profit, and for christmas, he got me a Mac Plus. it’s the 2mb version.

But the even better thing is that it came in the same exact case that Steve has in the video, along with the mouse, keyboard, and 10-key.

The things runs great, except for the OS. I need to get an OS disk to get it running.

But beyond that, the screen has no bad pixels, and it’s nice and bright.

Oh, and it also used to be an Apple salesman’s computer. His card is still on the bad. It states that he was a Sales Evangelist.

Now that’s what makes our computers better. We Evangelists, not associates.

  16. Yeah… Chariots of Fire.

Imagine showing a Macbook Pro to that crowd back then… they would have either started eating each other as a result of the ensuing frenzy of excitement or burned you at the stake for sorcery.

I always wonder how I would have reacted to seeing an Xbox 360 in 1984… That would probably be like watching someone jump into the air and fly away. It just wouldn’t make sense without seeing things progress toward that.

What the hell am I talking about?

Oh, yeah: So it was Chariots of Fire… The movie that is apparently about running in packs on the beach. Netflix that nonsense!

  24. The Mac event was a true Paradigm Shift. Hence the (over)enthusiasm. This completely changed the way we perceive and use computers.

  26. I think folks like Jobs shouldn’t be known and famous. Every egomaniac must stay in dirt for as long as his ego disappears.
Oh, probably this is what happened with him.
anyway, now he’s doing a better job, but that time it brings tears on how a man can be such an egomaniac
