Dell’s new “Dell Dock” looks familiar

Gizmodo has posted shots of Dell’s new “Dell Dock” that is shipping on all new Studio Laptops.

I know, I know, someone is going to point out that Linux has had a dock even before OS X, but Apple invented putting Jolly, candy-like buttons in it! Besides, do you think Dell is copying Linux?

Well judging by the widgets and the toolbar, this seems to be more along the lines of Superkaramba or Karamba functionality so yes… programatically, they are copying Linux as well as from a design perspective because the functionallity and the look are more like Linux than Mac.

I should know… I run both at home and at work.

adding to what Xeno said >> yea, I think they are copying Linux, not OS X here. Dell offers Linux as an OS option now. Makes sense that they take what customers like and put it on the Windows preinstall they ship as well.

For the ***** of the holiest thing in the world.

Linux is *NOT* an operative system. Its a platform. Of course they are not copying Linux, they are copying Gnome or KDE or XFCE or whatever…

And honestly, it already disturbs me that Apple now thinks it is the only OS against Windows and has a huge lack of respect for the costumers, I hope the community wont go that way…

Doesn’t really matter if it does or not, just the fact that they would copy a Linux idea or a OS X idea to “improve” what customers like in Vista just shows that Microsoft is behind the times and fails to innovate or put user experience as a priority.

It actually looks like someone has just put RocketDock to use on PCs. I have been installing this free software on all the PCs that I setup for people. I am a Mac, but if you have to use a PC, I try to make it as easy to use as possible (make it more like a Mac).

Uhm… NeXTSTEP had a dock before Linux even existed… And they stole the idea off Acorn’s ArthurOS.

take a chill pill and stop freakin on semantics. I did mention that they were copying Karamba and Superkaramba which of course is a program which can be installed on either desktop environment (but I believe comes standard with KDE). So just chill for a bit. Do you think you are the only one who uses a command line around here?
