Stop Scrabble cheaters in their tracks with CheckWord

We’ve all been there, winning by a close margin in the heat of a Scrabble game when suddenly some little, yellow, spikey haired punk tries to convince us that Quijbo (A fat, balding, North American ape with no chin) is a word. Well, Faithful Macenstein reader Quinton (who sounds awfully close to “Quijibo”, if you ask me) says that the new iPhone/touch app CheckWord is a Scrabble player’s dream app (and here I’d have thought it was Scrabble).

CheckWord allows users to choose between the TWL (Tournament Word List) Dictionary or the SOWPODS international Scrabble word list in order to verify whether or not a word is acceptable for use in the game – and no, Quijibo is not a word. Yet.

  10. It “embiggens” my heart to hear there is software to determine “cromulent” words… quote marks “are” fun, as are “Simpsons” references.

  16. Hey doc, got this the day 2.0 came out. . . . its a necessity for me because the guy my wife plays with on a weekly basis is a punk ass punk who tries to pass off fake words. . . . but now that I have this he says “well thats wrong, it is a word” and he’ll play it or leave.

One word he played I eventually found to be an actual word but spelled wrong like 2 minutes later and he was like “yeah I don’t care”.

Needless to say he isn’t my friend, and uh, I can’t stand him.

Hope you have better luck using it than I.

  22. What the hell is a ‘Kwyjibo’?

In case you’re wondering what the name ‘Kwyjibo’ means, it’s a reference to the Simpsons episode “Bart the Genius” where the Simpson family are playing Scrabble. The scene goes a little something like this:

    BART
    K-W-Y-J-I-B-O… Kwyjibo. 22 points… plus
50 points for using all my letters! Game’s
    over, I’m outta here…

    HOMER
Wait a minute, you little cheater — you’re
not going anywhere until you tell me
    what a Kwyjibo is!

    BART
Kwyjibo? Uh… a big, dumb, balding, North
    American ape with no chin…

    MARGE
    And a short temper!

    HOMER
    Why you little!! (chases Bart)

    BART
Uh oh, Kwyjibo on the loose!
