NetShare is BACK!!! We are witnessing history, people

[UPDATE:] Yeah, they pulled it again. When will this madness end?!?!

I’m not sure why, how, or for how long, but NetShare is back! Just 15 hours after appearing, then disappearing from the iTunes App store, Nullriver’s NetShare tethering application is again available for purchasing. It is not showing up in the iTunes App store yet in search results, but if you click on this direct link, it should take you there. I just downloaded it. SWEEET!

It’s Baaaack!.

Of course, NetShare being back online is just beginning of one of the largest iPhone-related stories in history, and it is really quite humbling to be here to witness its origin. By Apple allowing NetShare to be downloaded, it means that when AT&T inevitably slaps us all with outrageous data use charges for tethering, and we all subsequently plead ignorance, one of the biggest PR disasters for BOTH companies will explode in the media, and I am just very excited to see how this story unfolds. I have my popcorn ready and everything.

cant…wait…to…get…home and download this baby. i know for a fact 3 people who will buy an iphone, solely because this feature was the one missing feature they needed. go netshare!!

This is big. The only reason I’m not planning to purchase it now is that I don’t have a 3G iPhone. But one day, you betcha.

This isn’t tethering. Tethering uses DUN, converting the phone into a modem for the computer; the computer initiates the data connection instead of the phone.

With NetShare, all you’re doing is networking. From the cell provider’s perspective, all data (and requests thereof) come from the phone not the computer. It’s a SOCKS proxy server — meaning: The connection from your computer terminates at the phone. Netshare makes the connection to the web site on the computer’s behalf and passes that data back to the computer over a connection that’s invisible to the cellular network.

You can even have multiple devices join the ad-hoc wifi network and use Netshare at the same time (I’ve done it with two computers). That alone disqualifies it from the ‘tethered’ definition.
