OK, am I being fanboy…?

….or does this Wriggley’s Slim Packs gum commercial I just saw on the VMA’s just 15 minutes ago…

look more than a little like this iPod nano commercial?

I don’t know, if Lugz could threaten Apple with legal action for ripping them off with their Eminem commercial, then I think Apple’s got a case against Wriggley’s. I mean, check out the splice of the Lugz and Apple commercials below. Lugz got Apple to pull their ad based basically on using a similar color palette. I think the “Wriggley’s nano” commercial steals more than just colors. It’s got some squiggly neon lines wrapping around a person. Case closed. :)

  2. A fanboy? I’m a lot more concerned that you’re watching the VMAs.

  4. Ok, I see where you’re coming from. I do.

But, to answer your question… YES. You are being a fanboy ;)

This is just a common motion graphics style that is used universally. It’s not Apple’s invention. I agree, it’s very similar. But, it’s really just some wicked plugins that automatically generate arrows following keypoints. Pretty easy to make look dynamic in After Effects actually.

Also, don’t forget about this one. You should add it above.

  16. I think if they were selling a portable music player, Apple would have a case. Otherwise, they got nothing.

  18. @ Colin,

Well, Apple wasn’t selling sneakers, yet Lugz filed a cease and desist…

  20. Wasn’t there a sprint commercial that used something similar to this?

  22. I’m with imajoebob. So what if Family Guy’s a repeat? Read a book or tap into archived TiVo recordings (I have hours of stuff to watch on mine should I ever be faced with the prospect of watching the VMAs).

To answer the question: yeah, more than a little; but not enough for Apple to do anything. The iPod commercial is way cooler, suing Wriggley’s would be giving their commercial too much credit.

  24. You tell him, Dave-O.

I, for example, watched my special edition Blu-Ray disc of The Princess Diairies.
