Help Build the ultimate iPhone feature request list
We’ve had the pleasure of using the iPhone for a couple days now, and while we certainly view it as a technological marvel, there is always room for improvement.
Since Apple itself has said there will be future software updates to add new functionality to the iPhone, we thought we would compile a list of things we’d personally like to see in the iPhone, and we’d like your help.
We invite you to add your ideas in the comments below, and we’ll add the ones we think are the best to the master list. (And if anything we bring up here actually is already possible in the iPhone, please let us know. We don’t claim to be iPhone experts yet). We’re not really looking for things like “add more storage” or “add a faster network”. We’re more looking for things that can be added via software/firmware to improve the way the current iPhone functions.
The list will be updated periodically as we continue to test the iPhone.
-The Doc
Add Copy and Paste - this should be a no-brainer. The question is of course, how would it work given the touchscreen interface? I think the iPhone needed one extra multi-function “physical” button somewhere on the exterior which could be programmed to handle different functions based on the app. This would be one scenario where I could see that button handling a selection/copy text motion when held down and the cursor was dragged across. But there could be other methods of doing this using the existing interface.
Display should have an auto-dim/off function to conserve battery life (I am aware of the auto-lock feature, and this is not what I mean). Since battery life is a concern with an all-in-one device, I don’t see why there is not a setting to control the screen brightness during inactivity. For example, if you navigate to the iPhone’s main menu, and then put the iPhone on the desk and walk away, an hour later the main menu screen will still be shinning brightly (perhaps even damaging the screen!). If you leave it charging over night with that screen showing, it will have been on all night. Similarly, if you are playing tracks in iTunes, the screen will not dim either (I paused a music track over 25 minutes ago, and the screen has been using full power the entire time). A “regular” iPod’s screen will dim after a certain amount of time. Laptops have a similar function. On the iPhone, the only way to set this is to set up the auto-lock to go on, which is not always ideal. I would like to see the screen dim or go black after a user-defined time period, and be able to be woken by a touch, not a physical button press. [UPDATE: I noticed if you have the iPhone plugged into a wall outlet charging, and have your auto-lock turned ON, the phone will not lock, and will instead dim the display after the set time (depending on what you are doing, this is not consistent throughout the iPhone. The iPhone display dims when on the main screen, or while playing a song with the "iPod" screen up, but if you pause a song while charging, it will lock, not dim).
Not sure if this is intentional, but it is an example of what I want the iPhone to do when inactive and auto-lock is NOT turned on.
Drag URL onto "new page" icon to open a link in a new page - If you press and hold on a link in Safari, the link's the url appears. Since there is no "right click" to open the link in a new tab (page), I think it would be cool if you could drag that "pop-up" link onto the New Page icon to open it in a new page.
Safari Password Storing - I understand mobile phones are particularly susceptible to theft and the iPhone perhaps even more so due to it's "hot gadget" status, but I would love for Safari to be able to remember website passwords. The way see this working would be a "Keychain" type of functionality where one password could unlock them all. Have it timeout periodically for security (optional 5, 10, 30 min settings). Even entering the same password every half hour would be preferable to having to remember 30 others. Macenstein reader Kendall adds "I want Keychain on the iPhone as well, but also some kind of interface for reviewing and adding to the contents of Keychain - I’d like to be able to add other account codes there as well to be held securely."
Widescreen keyboard should be an option for EVERY app that handles text, not just Safari. It's just easier to type on a larger keyboard.
EVERY app should rotate when the iPod rotates. Mail and Notes especially, but maps would be cool too.
Add a master "Address Book/ Contacts" button to the main interface
Add an iTunes/Music controller to the top menu bar The top of the menu bar displays a little "play" icon when iTunes is playing music. When in any other app, you should be able to tap that triangle once to pause, and again to play. It is annoying to have to tap the "main menu" button, then "iPod", then "pause" if you need to quickly and briefly pause the music.
Flash and Java Support Obviously this will be tricky, but it will go a long way toward allowing developers to code more "app-like" applications for the iPhone, and should open up games to the iPhone as well. The problems are of course these will likely be crippled in some way by Apple/AT&T to discourage VoIP apps from being written. Rumors are Flash support will be added sooner than later, so perhaps we'll get an idea of Java's future when we see how Flash is handled.
Add "Disk Mode" like standard iPods I can't tell you how many times I use my iPod to move files to and from work. Let's get this going on the iPhone. After all, it is meant to help limit the number of devices we carry around. I don't want to keep my old iPod or a thumb drive handy.
Ability to assign more than one signature in Mail It took Apple a long time to being this feature to the "regular" version of OS X's Mail, but now that it's there, why didn't they carry it over to the Mail settings? The "signature" option should be located under each mail account's prefs, allowing you to assign a different signature to each sending address
I should be able to decline a call when the iPhone is "locked" If you manually lock your iPhone (or it auto locks after a set time) and you receive a call, you are presented only with the option of "Slide to unlock and answer phone". I cannot decline the call and stop it from ringing without answering it. This is potentially embarrassing in a meeting situation where you want to silence your phone's ringing without taking the call (I know there is a silent mode switch, but that is not the same. I want to be able to send people right into voicemail, instead of having everyone listen to my phone vibrate until they are sent to voicemail). Unlocking a ringing iPhone should NOT auto answer it (unless you set it in a preference). It should merely unlock it and then give you the answer/decline button it normally shows if it. again, this is just another option that you should be able to set in a $600 cutting edge phone. [UPDATE: Apparently you can decline a call by pushing the wake/sleep button twice. I still think it should work with the touch button, but at least it is possible]
Add “Games” Fairies, would be an awesome one for the touchscreen.
Add “Rules” to iPhone’s Mail This would go along with adding folders, most likely, but it would be useful in deleting junk mail (unless Apple decides to let the iPhone respect Junk Mail headers (see below)).
User defined custom ringtones I KNOW this must be a feature Apple will eventually add; they must have just not had time for everything. But NO phone calling itself a “music phone” limits this feature. One of us here at Macenstein has already said this is the sole reason he is holding out on buying an iPhone. I understand that perhaps Apple wants to start selling ringtones via iTunes, but let’s not get greedy Apple. There’s room for both.
Let us browse the device via Bluetooth I’d like to be able to get the photos I took with the iPhone onto my computer without having to e-mail them back and forth. Similarly, I’d like to be able to perhaps pull off notes. [UPDATE: A few people have pointed out iPhoto will try to import your iPhone pics when attached to your computer. I have 2 problems with using iPhoto as the conduit for photos. 1) I want to also be able to drag photos ON to the iPhone without adding them to my iPhoto library. For instance, many site have started making iPhone sized wallpapers of various subjects. I don't want a picture of Mr. Sparkle from the Simpsons or some Suicide girls in my iPhone library, but i MIGHT want them on my iPhone as wallpaper. 2) Anyone know what Windows users do?
Time stamping on SMS messages. There is none. What's up with that?
Add a "period" key to the main keyboard.
Directory access, or at very least, access to the photos folder So you can upload iPhone photos to websites that support that like flickr.
A "multiple delete" key for e-mail Right now you have to delete each message individually. (Maybe add a "checkbox" system, like many webmail clients use to perform bulk actions).
Ability to remove Application icons from the main menu screen I'm sure as Apple adds apps this will become possible. It bothers me that a slot is taken up by the "Clock" app right now. While it is somewhat convenient to know what time it is in Tokyo at the moment, my current time is right at the top of the iPhone. The Clock seems like it was turned into an application just for the sake of filling a hole.
Add audio output option to alarms and ringer Similar the iPod's options for the clickwheel sound to be heard in the "headphone", "speaker", or "both", I think ringtones and alarm reminders should have these options. Putting the phone in "silent mode" will not make the alarm silent, or play only via headphones. There are times when I use the timer to time something, like when a DVD or set of video dubs is scheduled to finish. I'd like to have the option of me being the only one who hears my alarm go off.
Let us use an iTunes song/playlist for our alarm. - While we're on the topic of the alarm, Macenstein reader Ryan says "I know I’m probably one of the 7 people who use their iPhone as an alarm clock, but the oversight of actually selecting from the music library is beyond me. I don’t want to wake up to a ringtone, i want to select from the 1,000 songs i put on the iPod. Come on, Apple, that’s easy. Step it up."
Add Cover Flow view for contacts. - Macenstein reader Daniel
Video Out like 5G iPod - Macenstein reader Tracy
Ability to send text messages to multiple recipients - Macenstein reader David
Ability to open a link in a new page Maybe a two finger tap?- Macenstein reader Michael McLean
iChat Built in chat functions like AIM or MSN - Macenstein reader Kris Snow
A way to email the full 2 Megapixel pictures taken from the camera At current it only emails a 640X480 picture. - Macenstein reader SeanG (We agree. We only noticed this behavior ourselves this afternoon. Disappointing).
Customizable Dictionary - Macenstein reader Doug Hardman
Safari bookmarks syncing should work like music/video playlist syncing. I don’t need my iPhone to have every bookmark that my desktop Safari has - there should be an ‘iPhone folder’ or an option to mark certain bookmarks with a ’sync to iPhone’ flag. - Macenstein reader El Payo
Pseudo GPS since there is not GPS chipset inside the iPhone, have google maps jump to the cell tower that you are currently logged on to - Macenstein reader john95127
Mail client should respect the mail server's junk mail headings and not download junkmail (We personally think this is a great idea!) Macenstein reader JTK
Ability to use the iPhone as a wireless modem Wireless modem for my laptop via Bluetooth, via serial (to save power), Wireless modem for my laptop via WiFi. (mini WAP). - Macenstein reader BusinessGuy
MMS Seems a next gen phone should support this current-gen feature. - Macenstein reader Ferna
A true RSS reader RSS almost makes more sense on an iPhone than a computer. - Macenstein reader Michael McLean
Get Groups working in iPhone's Mail Groups within address book do not retain their functionality in Mail. In Mail on OS X, inputting a Group Name into the To: field will automatically add all the email addresses you have stored in that group. Mail on the iPhone does not seem to support this feature. - Macenstein reader ScooterD
Video recording We're not sure if this is possible or not via software/firmware, but we're listing it anyway. Again, this is just one of those things found in clunkier, cheaper phones that an iPhone should be allowed to do. - Macenstein reader Florian Vanthuyne
Video uploading to YouTube and while we're at it. let's make it possible to upload those iPhone-shot videos to YouTube - Dr. Macenstein
Private photo gallery in Photos app I’d like a password protected album in the photo app. That’s the place where friends seem to go first to check out pictures and I’d love to have pictures that are my own private jokes and memories that are protected from being pawned through by others asking questions: ex-girlfriends/parents that kind of thing. People who are into mobile porn would probably like this too. - Macenstein reader Patrick
Support for Bluetooth GPS devices with Maps integration Bluetooth GPS devices are relatively inexpensive, have decent battery life, and wouldn’t have to add any bulk to the phone itself, since they’re external. - Macenstein reader ClunkClunk
Call duration We should know how long a call lasted. At the moment there is no way to see how long was a call. - Macenstein reader Jptolife
We actually can see this being useful to those who require time billing, like lawyers and such who charge for phone calls.
Support for AirTunes Since this is the first iPod with WiFi, I think support for AirTunes would be a welcome addition. Currently, you can only stream iTunes music to AirPort Express speakers from a computer. AirTunes directly from an iPod would eliminate need to use a computer for this. Just sit on the sofa with your iPhone, stream music to your speakers over WiFi. - Macenstein reader bky (We're not sure if this is possible with the iPhone's current hardware, but it is a cool idea).
Voice Dialing Hard to understand why on earth they left this out, but I would have waited to buy had I known it did not have it. I make alot of calls from my car (via bluetooth headset), and voice dialing is essential. - Macenstein reader Erik Olsen
How about a To Do list tool that syncs with iCal/Outlook? - Macenstein reader Laszlo
E-book reader (eReader) - Macenstein reader Chris
Ability to turn pictures off when browsing on safari with edge for faster load times. - Macenstein reader chris miles
Rearrange & Reorder I Googled for an hour trying to find out how to reorder my email accounts, stock lists & photo albums NADA, lemme drag & drop everything, please. - Macenstein reader Brett L
Add a search feature in the contacts bar When somebody like me has 1200 contacts they will get mixed up in different letters. An optional search bar should be included. - Macenstein reader Anonymous
Add a voice recorder I used this function constantly on my old phone. whether it be an idea for a song, or a spoken idea i couldn’t type out while driving, this was indispensable. - Macenstein reader lonelysandwich
Spotlight all over the place Mail, contacts, music, calendars, it should be everywhere. - Macenstein reader Allison
GPS via Dock connection I would like if there was an gps that could use the 30 pin connection at the bottom of the phone so it uses less battery life than blue tooth. - Macenstein reader Chris
Wi-Fi only mode How about letting me turn off the phone but not WiFi. I’ on vacation in a place with no cell coverage, but we do have WiFi here. My battery lasts only a day with the phone searching for a signal it is never going to find. - Macenstein reader John
iTunes Store I'm shocked you can't buy things directly from iTunes on Apple's first iPod + internet device, it seems ridiculous. And weird, cause they could make so much money from that. - Macenstein reader Allison
Allow all Application icons to display info Weather and clock icons should update continuously like the Calendar. Also, the calender should have notification buttons on it when you have an event within a specific time frame..for example if i have a meeting today one hour before the meting a “1″ notification button should appear on the calender- Macenstein readers Corey Gomel and Drew Russell
Add "dialed" and "received" to Call Lists Currently, the call lists are for All and missed. How about dialed and received as well? - Macenstein reader Seth Tepfer
Custom Dictionary I would like to add that I wish there was a way to teach the keyboard/dictionary words. I have used the “notes†features extensively to keep track of my day and find myself retyping some of the same words all the time and they are words that my phone doesn’t know yet. - Macenstein reader Kathleen
Turn the volume up to 11 Better volume while on calls and speakerphone. Louder ring tones. - Macenstein readers ballyhoo and Jamie
Mail fodlers Since I only use the POP email feature (currently) I would like the way to make a new folder to put mail into. They have the option to move a message to another folder, but only options are Inbox, OutBox, Sent, Trash. I would like to be able to make a new folder such as *save* so I can move emails (such as an email with my resume) into it so I can have it at all times without always seeing it in my inbox. - Macenstein reader Clint L
Contact Categories i got used to having categories in my Treo. Now I miss it. I want to be able to see filters for restaurants, family, doctors, co-workers. - Macenstein reader Bret L We agree. iTunes should have the option to sync only selected groups from the Mac's address book. I do not want something like drugstore.com added in my iPhone's address book just because I had them in My Mac's "stores" addresses used to perform a rule.
Keep the suggestions comin' folks!
[UPDATE: WOW. This list is growing fast! Thanks so much for all your comments. If Apple adds even a quarter of these suggestions in the coming months they will have the most revolutionary handheld device to date. And thanks for keeping (most of these) actually feasible! ]
[UPDATE 2: I have sent this link to Apple via their iPhone feedback page.]

I would like to see a movie theater widget added to the iPhone. Perhaps Apple is waiting until the widget demoed at WWDC is released with leopard, but I would like that functionality now, not in October.
MY LIST
2. Safari constantly just exits and takes me back to the home screen
with out me pressing the home button.
3. I can’t send a text message to multiple recipients (something I
could do on my old phone).
4. I can’t send (text or email) someone contact information, like a
phone number. Again, something I can do on my old phone (p.s. - my
old phone was a Motorola SLVR and Palm Treo 650)
5. The keyboard should definitely work in landscape mode, especially
in text applications (SMS, Email)
6. When you are writing SMS, the “return” button should be the send
button. Since when o you use a “return” button when you are writing a
text message. It is much easier to just have the send button there,
instead of having to reach up. Otherwise, at least put a period.
7. MMS!!
8. Cut and Paste! - I constantly want to email someone a hyperlink.
9. Games!!! - What cell phone out there doesn’t have games?
10. Wireless syncing - It should work just like my .mac account:
constantly syncing my contacts, calender etc.
11. Push email
12. Removable battery - the iPhone is much more a Mac than an iPod.
It therefore deserves a removable battery.
I’d like the ear piece volume on the phone itself to be louder. I find I need to use the headset to really carry on a conversation without pressing the phone to my ear to block all sound, especially outdoors.
Speaker phone volume should also be raised (maybe I am just going deaf)
Not sure if those can be changed in firmware or not.
Manual management of music. I HATE that I have to sync to iTunes, because that means that I have to keep all of my Apple Lossless files (what I listen to on the go and at home via my Airport Express), and my compressed music (AAC @ 256). That is a HUGE waste of hard disk storage, and makes it so that I have to use playlists to hear a song if I don’t want to hear each song twice. It’s very inconvenient.
“Let us browse the device via Bluetooth I’d like to be able to get the photos I took with the iPhone onto my computer without having to e-mail them back and forth.”
You don’t have to email photos to get them on your Mac, just open iphoto and it treats the iPhone as a digital camera and is ready to import the photos from the iPhone.
Solutions:
You can get your photos with iPhoto. You don’t need to email them.
Really you’ll be able to type a period as easy as any key on the main screen with some practice. See “Pogue’s Awesome iPhone Period-Typing Shortcut”
You can upload iPhone photos to Flickr via email for the time being.
David:
iPhone jumps from Safari to home when Safari crashes. This should be fixed soon.
Yahoo! offers push mail for the iPhone.
Requests:
I’d like to see voice over VoIP. T-Mobile’s move might even make this a possibility.
PDF, DOC, and XSL syncing w/ preview as an app.
A way to open a link in a separate page (maybe a two finger tap?)
A way to wipe the information or lock a stolen iPhone remotely.
How could we have forgotten Flash?
How about a true feed reader.
It seems, for some bizarre reason, that Groups within address book do not retain their functionality in Mail. In Mail on OS X, inputting a Group Name into the To: field will automatically add all the email addresses you have stored in that group. Mail on the iPhone does not seem to support this feature. Seems like it’s just an oversight, but I’d love to see that fixed.
Flash and additionally Adobe AIR runtime for development
How about a “Finder”?
What about syncing over WiFi? It’s certainly fast enough for it. While we’re on the subject… while the Edge network has performed “okay” for us in our test, 3G and 802.11n … sure it’s a lot to ask, but this is Apple.
oh yeah… one more thing. What about having the mail client on the phone trust the mail servers’ junk mail headings and not download junkmail.
Video recording would be something I hope it can handle when it arrives here in Belgium.
Also mms would be great, because you can ‘t expect everyone to check their mail every hour at least when you want to mail them something important.
I’ll post again if something else crosses my mind
Send a SMS message to multiple recipients, MMS and a volt with PIN number for personal Info.
I would like to be able to edit and add contacts while I am on the phone. Also mass deletion of emails, and when I send an email would love to be able to change who I am sending it from without changing the default Mail account for my phone first.
Not a software update, but I’m hoping they add GPS in the next version. I’m stuck with Verizon till October anyway, though I doubt it’ll be added by then.
Yeah, the gamne Fairy would be nice! Great idea!
Ability to save attachments, specifically PDFs and Photos, from email messages.
MMS! For some reason this weekend more times than I can count, I was asked to snap a pic and send it to person X via MMS. I could not — instead I had to email.
One more thing — iPod games should work with the iPhone. This seems like a no-brainer.
And back to the MMS thing — Apple, I was really embarrassed about my $600 purchase when I had to tell people on many occasions that I can’t send a photo to someone else’s phone via MMS…
Let’s also beef up the bluetooth stack — there’s no reason I should have to email content to and from my Wife’s phone when she’s standing right next to me.
Default full screen brightnesss when iPhone is plugged in- like the Mac’s power saving settings, it would be nice that if the iphone has full power, it doesn’t worry about saving it, as it’s recharging. I like the screen somewhat dimmer when carrying around in my pocket, but when it’s on my desktop, it’d be nice, since it’s farther away, that it would beam at full quality.
Make multiple contacts possible to be added to one SMS message - I’d like to be able to send the same message to multiple people, or even a address group on the contacts page. I sometimes like to send the same info to multple folks.
Institute double tap access for main icons- I use SMS a lot. I’d like easy access at the bottom of the screen. An easy way to do that would be a double tap of the phone icon for the SMS model. A double tap of the mail icon could take you to a compsoe message, a double tap of the safari message could take you to your bookmarks folder, a double tap of the iphone icon to take you to your videos
Ability to change the default email sending address- I have an IMAP yahoo account that I’m using to accumulate all my iphone important emails via forwarding. I’d never like to send from that address, I’d like to be able to set my main email address as the smtp server address, when replying to messages from the yahoo account.
Private photo gallery in photo app- I’d like a password protected album in the photo app. That’s the place where friends seem to go first to check out pictures and I’d love to have pictures that are my own private jokes and memories that are protected from being pawned through by others asking questions: ex-girlfriends/parents that kind of thing. People who are into mobile porn would probably like this too.
I would love it if Apple included support for bluetooth GPS devices and integrates that with the built in Google Maps. Bluetooth GPS devices are relatively inexpensive, have decent battery life, and wouldn’t have to add any bulk to the phone itself, since they’re external. I’d probably keep mine in the car, and use it there 90% of the time, but drop it in my pocket for those times I wanted my GPS on person. You can do it with Windows Mobile PDA phones, and I’d hate to have to get one of those to do what I want.
Here’s the feedback I sent to Apple on the iPhone:
There should be some modal tools located in the upper left corner of the screen that change the context of the finger input. These would include the ‘pointer’ tool (pointing finger icon), which is the default which behaves like the current iPhone interaction mode, an ‘info’ tool (lowercase ‘i’ icon), which would initiate a hover action on something you point to on the screen, and display any tooltips info on the selected interface element. If you click a second time on that element when in info mode, it returns to ‘pointer’ mode and initiates the standard click action. If you click on a different interface element, it will display the info for that. This will also provide a workaround for mouse-hover-dependent web site interfaces in Safari. The third modal button would be a ‘text’ or ’selection’ tool (with the classic text selection cursor icon), which can select some text, image, or other element on the screen. With this tool active, the area you click on is the start of the text selection (in the case of text being clicked on), and the next points you point to or drag your finger to extend the text selection. In the case of an image or other element being selected, the first click selects the entire object you point to. If you click on the currently-selected text or object, it changes back to ‘pointer’ mode, and allows you to drag your selection to the edge of the screen. You can then change to whatever window or application you want to paste it to, and drag it back from the edge of the screen to where you want to paste it. You might allow application developers to make their own modal interaction buttons and parameters.
A white iPhone.
Just so you know, Apple release a video on how to decline a call on a manually locked iPhone. The top on/off button has “tap to decline” and “double-tap” to send to voicemail functionality.
Thanks Adam, we actually just updated that entry about a second ago!
-The Doc
We should know how long a call lasted. At the moment there is no way to see how long was a call.
Multiple Recipient Text messaging for sure!
I want a
1. 80GB flash iPhone and ready to pay $400 for it.
2. Voice-dialing
3. Easily replaceable battery
4. Shorter in size - but not smaller screen.
5. Can be ‘unlocked’ so that it can be useful in world-travel.
support flash and also be able to send pictures and media via txt message.
GPS chip built in. This should be a killer app in itself. Imagine getting into your car and fixing your phone into the built in iDock integrated with a down loadable gmap.
Built in chat functions like AIM or MSN.
Ability to record video.
GPS can fit in a razr, why not in an iPhone?
I thought that all phones will have to support gps..
So why does it not have gps.
Java and Ajax support.
Hello, web 2.0 is here. and your not answering the call.
Anodized colored case options (black and pink, obvious first choices)
Laser engraving
If a virtual keyboard works… Simple solution to “how to do” on a touch screen is a virtual two button mouse. Or corners of the screen can be assigned function….
Flash support! C’mon now.
Two presses of the Home button automatically takes you to Favorites in the Phone app.
Unlocked iPhone that can be used in prepaid plans.
Here’s my list…
#1 - Save photos/docs sent in email (so I can re-send/save.)
#2 - Customizable Dictionary. ( I miss my BlackBerry where I could hit the spacebar twice and have a “. ” entered…or type “sig” and have it put all my info at the end of an email.)
#3 - Dedicated Period Key (As noted above.)
#4 - Add Contact info to the “locked” screen. (If I have my phone stolen, I’d love for someone to know hot to get ahold of me.)
1. Wireless modem for my laptop via Bluetooth.
2. Wireless modem for my laptop via serial (to save power).
3. Wireless modem for my laptop via WiFi. (mini WAP).
4. VPN client for my particular company — Checkpoint.
5. Blackberry and/or Goodlink application.
6. Keychain-sync with my laptop for my web passwords.
7. WiFi server, so I can copy files to/from via sFTP.
I tried to figure out how to create custom folders in Mail but I couldn’t seem to figure it out. Maybe I’m missing but if not that should be something to add.
Also I agree with most of the commenter’s here…there should be an accept or decline button when the phone is locked.
Yes, a prepaid version of the iPhone.
Come on now! No one has mentioned the lack of support for PUSH MAIL or IMAP IDLE? How about OTA support for Exchange?
Cal
My wish is a variation of the “Ability to remove Application icons from the main menu screen”. I’d like the home screen to be completely customized… put the widgets under a widget sub menu, and allow me to put shortcuts to any screen (For example, you could put a contact on the home screen, for speed dialing). That way, I could remove the widgets I don’t use (Clock, calculator, etc), and add items I do use (Speed dial for pizza, Digg, etc)
1. Bang for the Buck (the iPhone is $500-$600 + 2yr contract, my X01HT was $450 shipped, duties, taxes, basically to my door, my phone is completely unlocked and I can use it on any provider I wish with NO CONTRACT)
2. Missing high security password (I can use either simple or adv on my X01HT, that’s letters AND numbers)
3. Voice Dialing (either pre-recorded or full voice command, this is a safety concern, you should not occupy both hands while driving on anything other than driving the car/holding the steering wheel, without voice dialing and tactile feel, you need both hands to do ANYTHING with the phone, on most phones you hit the MFB button on my Bluetooth headset, say Call “persons name†and confirm, why did they leave this out)
4. Voice Digit Dialing (even the Razr V3x has this)
5. Crippled 3rd party support (websites are not an application)
6. No MMS (some phones don’t support HTML email which is the majority, and i’m not remembering everyone’s full 10 digit number as well as the email domain name from their carrier, I cant even copy and paste the address)
7. No built in instant messaging or 3rd party support (this is ridiculous, even the business oriented blackberry has support for ALL popular protocols, just who exactly is the iPhone marketed towards?)
8. 1st Gen models don’t have 3.5G yet in a couple months European versions do? (not confirmed but still, you cant sell in Europe without 3.5G, also you are paying 3G rates for data fees as its mandatory, but you don’t get 3G, also don’t tell me that 3.6mbit Vs 250kbit is something that isn’t important and can you can look the other way)
9. Crippled video support, (only plays h.264 which NO OTHER PHONE CAN RECORD. The standard is 3gp and some others can do MP4, mine does both record and play. My X01HT can play any format I choose, even the windows media player supports multiple formats )
10. Lack of Removable battery (some blackberry users would die if they lost this ability, this is not even a feature, it should be mandatory, also what happens if you want more battery life? Buy some corded battery pack? I prefer just buying a high capacity battery for my X01HT, 10hrs talk ïŠ)
11. Self serviceable battery (Out-of-warranty battery replacement: $79 + $6.95 shipping? $80 for a battery is just a rip off. I can get an OEM battery replacement for my Softbank and it costs me $15 SHIPPED)
12. Difficult one handed use because of the lack of tactile feel (this was true for my older HTC Prophet, however the prophet had a D-PAD, menu and ok buttons, my X01HT has a jog dial, Steve jobs reason is because devices with keyboards cant change, they are static. This is strange because the devices he shows in the video had mapable buttons, this is a built in utility in WM5/6 where you can assign any task or application to launch)
13. Choice of plan - Mandatory Data fees, Mandatory Voice fees (I don’t let any company tell me what to do with my cell phone plan)
14. Choice of carrier (looks like the iPhone is REALLY locked to ATT, it maybe highly difficult to unlock at this point in time)
15. Crippled camera (no video of any kind!, no templates, no advanced options like exposure, burst, high speed shutter, panoramic mode, etc also just because some of the users out there don’t use the camera doesn’t mean its ok to turn a blind eye. I use the camera on my x01ht not to take pictures but to decode QR Barcodes, OCR business cards to pocket outlook, OCR documents, etc)
16. Themes (if the iPhone is all about looks, why cant you theme anything on it? I don’t think you can even change your icons, that’s -1 for looks)
17. Same iPod restrictions apply (apple forces you to do it their way, I would rather my phone show up as a removable drive like a USB flash drive and just drag my songs and play lists on, I don’t enjoy installing bloated garbage like iTunes, which just got even more bloated. I enjoy using my choice of audio format, FLAC, OGG, MP3, etc)
18. Lack of UMS capability (Steve jobs said in his announcement video that it’s the best iPod they have ever made, ok it may look the best but even the lowest and cheapest iPod’s are capable of UMS, UMS for those who don’t know basically means your iPod shows up as a Drive letter or removable drive so you can drag and drop files to it, with the iPhone no such thing exists, IMO this is a step back from even an iPod shuffle)
19. Streaming Radio/Audio (apparently the iPhone cant do it or it has a very low compatibility with most stations, but it can stream QT movies from apple’s website?)
20. Cannot use a screen protector since it uses capacitive touch (your skin must touch the glass) I would rather have a screen protector on my phone and when I sell it after around 1 yr, the screen will look exactly how it looked when I took it out of the box, I’ve been doing this since 4 pda’s ago, and every one I’ve sold had a perfect screen, this will also limit the options for a case)
21. Games? (These are easy to add through firmware update or patch in iTunes, but #1, I don’t install bloated software, #2 it should come with at least solitaire, or do they want people to watch you tube and waste their money on data fees? The cheapest of phones had this, my first phone, a Nokia 3360 even had 3 games)
22. Expandable memory (no expandable memory, if your internal memory fails you are HOOPED, if my MicroSD card fails, I buy another 2-4GB for $20-$65 at the most)
23. Cannot edit documents (what if i’m emailed a document that I have to make a change too, do I have to go back to my pc to do that? That alone contradicts the word “mobility†on my X01HT, not only can I edit word docs and spreadsheets, I can edit and also create power point slides, hell I can make any document I wish actually with 3rd party support. The reason why I bring this up is because in the announcement video Steve compared the iPhone with smart phones and black berries all of which support document editing)
24. no LED Flash or LED Flash light, (even that cheap garbage Nokia 2125i phone from virgin mobile has an led light, I have used the led flash to get a clearer picture for the business card OCR program I have, I’ve also used it in a really dark hall way when the power went out during a snow storm)
25. ultra crippled Bluetooth stack (apparently it does not have any Bluetooth profile except HSP, what the hell good is that going to do? You cant exchange your contact info with another Bluetooth phone or even an iPhone, you cant send pictures or documents, you cant retrieve pictures from a Bluetooth camera, you cant get on a Bluetooth network which has >EDGE speeds 1mbit and low power, you can sync wirelessly which is really handy, cant use your phone as a modem for your laptop, the BT stack on the phone is completely useless, I don’t even think it will pair with cars that require HFP, SAP and PBAP, if you are going to make the Bluetooth support WORSE than TELUS and Verizon phones then this is an automatic deal breaker)
26. Lack of A2DP (this goes with the crippled Bluetooth statement, however, not very many people know what Bluetooth really is, but many people want wireless headphones as well as wireless everything, reminds me of the people that think routers are plug and play, no security, still apple apparently markets the device as an iPod as well, well A2DP and playing Music go hand in hand)
27. GPS Support? (unconfirmed if Google maps will talk to a GPS via SPP or virtual com port through Bluetooth, I don’t even think the iPhone supports SPP, my phone doesn’t have a built in GPS but I have a Global Sat BT308 which I got in 2003 and its never had a problem, that GPS device has paired with 14 different PDA’s and they’ve all recognized it, both WM and Sym)
28. choose my own ring tones (I want to use mp3’s that I made myself using Nero wav editor and audacity, I don’t want to pay for it, I already have a folder on my computer for ring tones and with my current phone I just drag and drop the folder to my PDA’s \windows\rings\ folder. I don’t want iTunes to convert it or charge me for it, I just want to use the freaking ring tone! No phone should be this difficult in getting a ring tone onto it. I prefer a different tone for each person so I can identify who is calling right away. How much money do I have to pay apple to use my own ring tones on a phone that I bought for $600)
29. Bloated OS (the OS alone takes around 700MB on your FORMATTED 4-GB partition, if you see above the iPhone is lacking so many features, what is the 700MB actually doing? I doubt the animation takes that much. On a WM5 phone the OS takes around 60MB? But has support for how many things? WM can handle literally thousands of 3rd party applications)
30. Apparently you cant change the background of the home screen ($600 and you cant change the background image? Everyone has the same home screen, way to think different!! The cheapest of Samsung or Nokia’s can change the background)
31. Compatibility with headphones, apparently there is a small plastic lip (the connector is recessed) that will prevent connectors like the one found on the Sony MDR-V300 (it has screws/threads for the larger 6.3mm audio adapter, also some SHURE and SENHEISER headphones are reported to not fit, how can they have over looked this problem? The earphones that come with the iPhone are not everyone’s cup of tea, lack of A2DP doesn’t help either)
32. Higher Resolution Videos (cannot even SYNC any video over 480p, on mine i’ve played 720p videos using the ATi Imageon driver built into TCPMP without a hitch, this means you have to re-encode all your videos)
33. Business Accounts (apparently if you have a family plan or business account already, you will be prevented from activating your phone, this is ridiculous, it shouldn’t really matter what you have because you already paid, Again, Steve compared it with phones that were meant for the business worlds, IE SMART PHONES, yet you cant use a business plan?)
34. Legacy Support (you have to BUY 10.4.10 OSX if you have 10.3.9 or earlier, and that’s over $100USD, what PHONE makes you buy a new OS? That is totally unreasonable)
35. Cannot tether phone (cant use it through Bluetooth nor can you use the USB cable to get internet connectivity on a laptop or desktop, yet you are forced into a data plan that you can only surf at edge speeds, yet every other phone will allow you to hook it up, most phones have an option to change to “modem†mode, a $600 phone that’s not capable of DUN)
36. No Java applet support (most phones have this, it allows the phone to run 3rd part applications that can give it MUCH MORE functionality, IE RAZR has a crappy built in browser, you get Opera mini for FREE and you have full HTML)
37. Lack of File Browser (my Brothers 4 year old Siemens SK65 had a FULL file browser which you can delete, copy and move things around, all Symbian and WM5/6 phones have an internal one as well, most file browsers will let you send files, email files, etc as a menu option, but the iPhone with its “massive†8GB storage has none? When I say massive I mean not a lot of phones have this much storage, but even phones with 32MB of storage has browsers to manage your files)
38. Inability to attach files to mail? (this relates to the file browser bit, you cannot attach anything to an email, there is simply just no option, but you have a “massive†8GB of storage and cant share anything really)
39. bad internal integration of applications (above I mentioned you cant attach files, not even photos, you have to open your photos to send them in an email but only one at a time? Why can’t I attach the 3 pictures of my dog in 1 email to send to my GF? I have to send 3 emails? Come on, apple should of though this out a little more, sending emails from the Photo application seems backwards to me. I admit, Resco photo viewer for WM5 has a “send to option†where you have the choice of IrDA, Bluetooth, Email and MMS. But Outlook will also let me attach the files I want, I can even select multiple files using the stylus, why can’t the iPhone do this?)
40. Cant Copy and Paste (from the points above, this is really needed to get around some of the other faults, but since this is missing too it just adds another negative to the iPhone, for the people that say you don’t need copy and paste, stop using it on your computer then)
41. weird resolution (the screen is a “higher†resolution than a lot of flip phones and such, however its not a standard resolution, 480×320 isn’t not even wide screen as Steve jobs advertised it to be, 3:2 isn’t recognized as any standard resolution, the iPod video being 320×240 is actually more compatible with PDA phones being 4:3, if you have an iPod video you need to re-encode all the videos on it to match the native resolution of the iPhone, playing a video in the native resolution of your LCD display looks best, anything else may be grainy or stretched, the argument that this screen is better than all others is false, the HTC Universal had a VGA screen 2.5 years ago as well as 3G. a lot of PDA phones now are VGA including a flip phone from I-Mate soon to be released)
42. lack of alert customization/Profiles(apparently you cannot set vibrate to things like calendar events, SMS, etc I would expect the alerts to be at least customizable in a $600 phone, most phones have profiles for Home, Office, Silent, Stealth, meeting, etc the iPhone has nothing)
43. Keyboard issues (you cannot change the keyboard into landscape mode in anything but Safari, Why? WM phones will switch orientation on command, doesn’t matter what program your in, it will switch, you can also tweak the button mapping to change orientation with the push of a button)
44. IPhone calculator? (I though it had one, i’m not sure, if it has weather, stocks, maps, what about a calculator? All phones have this, really, even from 2002)
45. My last point is, the iPhone is not a revolutionary device by any means, and no Steve jobs nor apple invented “Multitouch†as he stated in his demo. Multitouch was done in so many products prior to 2004, even SMART Boards had this. Also when he says he “reinvented†the phone, I don’t think he realized that he reinvented a converged device with less functions than the original products he was merging. If you have a converged device, the sum of its abilities should actually exceed the 2, 3 or 4 device originals. For example, I have a PDA, I can write html email but I can’t send it unless I have WiFi, with a regular phone, I can send emails but not HTML, when you merge the 2 devices you can send html emails. Next example, GPS, phone, PDA convergence, I have Google maps, maps don’t work unless you have a GPS, nor can it update unless you have an internet connection, you merge all 3 devices together and you have active GPS tracking in Google maps, no single device could do that before. When you merge a device, you should not be loosing ANY features, you should be gaining features that you’ve never had before in addition to the ones you already had.
Hypno-toads
an SSH client, so I can use the iPhone as a remote terminal, just like I was able to with my Treo.
When Im plugged in in the car and a call comes in let the car speakers play the sound of the call and the internal mic pick up my voice.
I would definitely like a weekly calendar view that like that of ical. I like to look at my week at a glance and see the time blocks
I’d like to see a more detailed view of the battery life when unplugged, similar to the display when the iPhone is docked. All we have currently is the little icon in the top left which is only mildly accurate.
Speech!
I want the iPhone to speak who is calling me. My old LG phone use to have a setting where it would read out-loud who was calling before it would ring. This way I knew who was calling without having to look at the phone, it also lets me screen my calls audibly. I see little reason why the iPhone shouldn’t have both voice recognition and speech, Mac OS X already does.
We who love Net Neutrality should be boycotting the iphone because of ATT and it’s desire to do away with Net Neutrality. Boycott the iphone !
Here’s a nice way to select multiple emails for deletion: Simply use multi-touch to select many of them with the two fingers! (one finger selects the first one, and while holding that finger down, the second one can select the last email on the list).
Note that this applies not only to emails but to ANY multiple-selection list!
I’m listening to music with my new shiny iPhone. Cool. Now, wouldn’t be great if I come home and it would automatically switch to my HiFi Stereo? That’s my killer feature: AirTunes built right in the iPhone!
1) The ability for the iPhone to always be able to send mail.
Right now, you can only have one SMTP server per email account. So, what that means, if I’m at home using Cox’s SMTP, when I leave and go to work, I either have to go into that account’s settings to type in the SMTP that my iPhone can use through my work router, or wait until I get back home.
Realistically, the iPhone should automatically send through at&t’s SMTP (which I’ve had no luck doing with the SMTP their support section provides) if it can’t resolve any other user-entered SMTP servers.
2) No Reply-To address field? I have only ONE email as far as everyone is concerned… it’s a bigfoot account that distributes it to my webpage email, gmail, and yahoo. The problem is that since there’s no reply to field, everyone will now get up to 3 emails for me, when they should only have the one. This is just blatant email standard disregard.

Flash support in Safari. It’s not a very needed feature, but it would be nice.
I WANT FLASH!!!
I’d like the “For Follow-up” flag in Mail — and I’d like to be able to “keep” a message, even after it goes past the “show x messages” threshold.
Also why on earth can’t I view PDFs in landscape mode? Seems like a no-brainer…
1) A button to take you all the way back to the email accounts page. This is mildly annoying when you have multiple email accounts - it now takes you several button presses to get back to the accounts page to choose your other account.
2) The ability to update subfolders to your Inbox while POP’ing email. As it stands currently, it will only POP your inbox, but if you have Exchange Rules to filter email to specific folders, it won’t update those folders until you manually go look in them to see if there is anything new.
3) The ability to save a picture as a wallpaper or save to your pictures from email or from Safari. Currently there is no way to set pictures you find on the web or was emailed to you as a wallpaper or save them to your pictures. Some way to interact with pictures on the web via Safari would be very nice.
4) A way to email the full 2 Megapixel pictures taken from the camera. At current it only emails a 640X480 picture.
We also created a list of the main 40 lacks and limitations to the iPhone. Maybe it’s time to send it to Steve?
Dude, if you don’t want an iPhone, don’t get one. Half your points are personal preference, many are just incorrect (#20 for example), and the rest Apple left out by choice. The iPhone has some flaws and there are a few things that I would like added, but if it didn’t have the features I wanted, I would just get a different phone. I wouldn’t post a 45-point list about what’s wrong with it.
Dr. Mac:
Addressing your 2nd bullet, auto-dim IS possible. Go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock and set a time. I set mine for 1 minute and the screen dims after 45 seconds of inactivity and then goes to sleep at 1 minute.
Safari bookmarks syncing should work like music/video playlist syncing. I don’t need my iPhone to have every bookmark that my desktop Safari has - there should be an ‘iPhone folder’ or an option to mark certain bookmarks with a ’sync to iPhone’ flag.
text messages…it should show the time and date of EACH message sent and recieved. im not sure exactly how it distingueshes when a “convorsation” is over or w/e but it seems to almost randomly decide when to put the time of a text. FIX IT. the iphone needs so much work…would anybody recomend returning my iphone and waiting untill the next gen? or will the updates take care of everything, in the future.
get with it apple
Here are my complaints:
Can’t add SMTP servers in mail
Can’t add multiple photos in an email
Can’t use iChat!!!!!!!!
Can’t edit contact groups
Can’t switch accounts if one mail server isn’t working
Can’t edit weather locations order
Synching with bluetooth on my computer does nothing
Can’t find other devices on Bluetooth
Can’t check email more often than 15 minutes
Provide 3G, EDGE and WIMAX support.
“[UPDATE: Apparently you can decline a call by pushing the wake/sleep button twice. I still think it should work with the touch button, but at least it is possible]”
You only have to press it once, not twice, and I just reconfirmed that three times on my phone just now.
It’s way easier to do this if it’s in your pocket too.
“Display should have an auto-dim/off function to conserve battery life”
The iPhone has this feature already. First, under “Brightness” if you select “Auto Brightness” your phone will dim greatly if not used within around 30s. Under “General” you can select “Auto Lock” and a period. If you don’t have a passcode set you’ll just have to “slide to unlock.” This is good because it prevents accidental turn-on in your pocket.
“Time stamping on SMS messages. There is none. What’s up with that?”
There are timestamps. When the initial message is sent a timestamp appears on top. If a new message occurs something like 2-5 minutes from the last a timestamp is added. They’re grouped instead of individual. On the text message list screen it will also show the last time a text message was received.
The rest I agree with though, especially the widescreen keyboard in every keyboard-usable app.
Since this is the first iPod with WiFi, I think support for AirTunes would be a welcome addition. Currently, you can only stream iTunes music to AirPort Express speakers from a computer. AirTunes directly from an iPod would eliminate need to use a computer for this. Just sit on the sofa with your iPhone, stream music to your speakers over WiFi.
Syncing over WiFi will also address the speed issues with trying to copy large files over Bluetooth. There is already a form of TCP/IP sync between your computer and .Mac, so this should not be extremely difficult.
Also, one thing to note about the clock - it does more than just tell you the times in various zones. It’s also an alarm clock, a timer and a stopwatch. So it’s useful, but it would be nice to remove apps.
1. Voice Dialing - hard to understand why on earth they left this out, but I would have waited to buy had I known it did not have it. I make alot of calls from my car (via bluetooth headset), and voice dialing is essential.
2. Flight status widget(s)
3. Fandango widget - would be great to buy movie tickets with my iphone without having to print a “receipt” to present to the theater to get my tickets.
i would like to know what “david” asked…
would it be worth returning the iphone now and waiting for the next generation or will almost everything be updatable through itunes???
I was going to say, I never changed settings and my phone dims after about a minute, and locks shortly after that - and the screen being on “damaging the screen”? Come on!
As for photos on Windows - I’m still not sure how photos wuld get loaded in, but when I plug the phone into Windows to sync it asks me which application I want to use to load images.
X01HT: We don’t care what your X01HT can do, and almost all your complaints about the iPhone are invalid or at least very ill-informed (there is an adapter that lets any headphone work just fine with the iPhone headphone jack). In fact the iPhone would suck if they implemented half the crap you want to load it up with (file browser?). Try complaining about a device you have used before, OK? There are needs to fill, but you are thinking tangentally to how the device operates, and just parroting all the common misconceptions and myths about problems with the device.
Kendall,
You are referring to the auto-lock feature as a screen dim/protector. I think of it more as a “hold switch”. There are times you do not want the screen to go black, and there are time when you do not want auto-lock on. All I am saying is I think it would be helpful to have a menu option under BRIGHTNESS for “auto-dim display after 1, 5,10 15 minutes”.
I personally find it annoying that if you are listening to a song, and your autolock goes on, in order to pause your iPhone you need to press one of the physical buttons to wake it, then slide to unlock, then tape the pause button. Wouldn’t it be easier if tapping the glass woke it, and you hit pause? the iPod is pretty well thought out and refined. I think the iPhone should borrow as much from it as it can.
Just my opinion, of course, we are all entitled.
-The Doc
- BTW: there *is* “Time stamping on SMS messages. ”
- Calendar: ability to add an event by touching a time interval
- Photos: support for subfolders! I have about 2000 photos, and even split into 10 folders, automatic support of subfolders would be great (I just can’t put all 130 sub-folders at the same top level and click each one of them from iTunes)
- Photos: quick way to erase all pictures (from Camera Roll or folder)
- Photos: send through MMS
- Settings: Usage: total number of SMS sent so far (to check against the 200 limit)
- Phone: Favorites: click on a contact blue arrow, there should be an “Edit” bottom on the top right, just like in “Contacts”
- Mail: Add a “Mark all read” button to mark all emails as read
- Mail: Add a “Empty trash” button
- Web: even if there is only one page, add a button in the “pages” view so that it can be closed just like if there were multiple pages
- Web: at least a cache for the last 5 pages.
- Web: zoom in / zoom out using the volume button on the left side of the iPhone (like the Nokia N800, *much* more practical than pinching).
P.S. - I want Keychain on the iPhone as well, but also some kind of interface for reviewing and adding to the contents of Keychain - I’d like to be able to add other account codes there as well to be held securely.
Many functions could be enabled by gestures.
Some things are done better with a stylus, like drawing, which is something else I would like to see it do.
LDJ
my motorola razr has better features than this thing.
I’d like a shell and ssh pre-installed. One of the main attractions to OS X was the ability to utilize all things unix. This is the only reason why I didn’t buy one.
BLUETOOTH OR WIRELESS SYNC
I have a Sony 810i and I was amazed by the integration that I could get with OSX. The bluetooth capabilities are used to the extreme by OSX with this phone. The computer alerts me when I get a call, use my phone as a network hub, modem and a remote control!!! Also using scripts from http://www.technocrat.ca/?p=44 with combination with an application called Proximity my phone becomes a proximity key to the computer and also makes possible regular auto syncing.
I was hoping that iPhone will take this to the next level like a better notification of calls (who is calling….) and using my computer to answer the call and also use the computer as a bluetooth/wireless headset.
If bluetooth is considered too slow for media sycing then we can use the wifi capablities of the Phone. Even if this is felt as being insuffuicient (Jobs feels that if the wifi is good enough for streaming media read youtube, then I think it should also be good enough for syncing), then maybe just leave out media and allow other data to be synced. PLEASE.
The bluetooth capabilities have been severely hampered and I hope as apple has been pointing out repeatedly the phone runs OSX. I hope a further update will add these capabilities.
You can choose not to accept a call without unlocking already.
Tap the sleep button once to shut off the ringing, double tap to send the caller to your voice mail.
Also, you’ll have no need of a period on the main keyboard after you read this tip:
Works for me.
I totally disagree with the copy/paste. That would be a mess. You can’t even select text right now!
If people are requesting copy/paste it’s because they want a specific work flow, such as email a URL or add email in web page to contacts. That makes sense.
No copy or paste please!
In addition to the features mentioned I have a minor improvement and a borrowed suggestion from a Flickr thread.
• In calculator mode, the + and - keys are in the wrong place and should be swapped.
Almost all calculators have the + button next to the = button (and/or in the bottom right corner), the iPhone, in trying to mimic the button layout of a Braun ET calculator, places the - button next to the = button and shifts the + button up to a less obvious position. Odd.
Now for the (borrowed) suggestion:
• In calculator mode, it should become a more advanced, scientific calculator when rotated to landscape mode.
How about a To Do list tool that syncs with iCal/Outlook? I can’t believe Apple skipped that.
I would like to welcome screen (i.e., screen displayed before the iPhone is unlocked) to show the next iCal event, unread messages, etc. (what is displayed should be chosen by the user)
Wow, do you folks even have an iPhone? There’s so much BAD information in here:
1) iPhone supports IMAP IDLE.
2) Two taps of the Home button DOES NOT take you to Favorites in Phone
3) Auto-Dim/off is available if enabled under Auto-Lock (yes, someone put that in there)
4) iPhone supports AJAX, it’s one of the main tools for developing web applications for it.
5) x01HT: How about listing a feature request once, instead of 2 and 3 times, we get it, keep your dumb phone (and complaining that the screen resolution is *too* high, is just dumb)
6) You can activate just fine with a Family plan, just not a business discount plan
7) Screen protectors work just fine, not that you need them, since you can’t scratch the glass even intentionally (lots of video on ‘net providing this)
You’re complaining that we have 8GB of storage, compared to your 2? Dumb.
9) 700MB for a full-blown OS running on a device is pretty good. Also, keep in mind no where does it SAY that’s all used, simply reserved.
10) You don’t have a GF.
11) It has a calculator. It’s the widget called “Calculator”. You’ve clearly not even seen a device, or apparently any of the thousands of pictures of one.
12) I don’t think you should comment on the revolutionary aspects of a device that you’ve never held in your hand, or used. Anyone who has held one, and used it, wants one.
13) Web-based SSH client is already available
14) A “weekly” view can be easily obtained by just putting it in List view, where it will list as many events from the current day forward as will fit on the screen. This is more than adequate. Also in month view, tapping a day lists all the events for that day underneath the calendar.
15) Two finger selection of multiple items in lists doesn’t work (at least not in Email)
In regards to the request for an auto-dim function, the iPhone does have an ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) that you can turn on in Settings > Brightness that will Auto-Dim the display. It’s called Auto-Brightness. Just turn it on and you will have a sort of “auto-dim,” at least in low-light situations. I know it’s not exactly what you want, but it’s something.
Now, if you want it to shutoff/go into Stand-by soon or at all do the following: tap Settings > General > Auto-Lock > and set it to the desired value. The iPhone display will then dim, then turn off after the specified amount of time has passed. I don’t have time to read the rest of the requests, but I’ll bookmark this site and come back and check from time to time to see if there are any other requests I can accomodate.
SysAdmin: please do not publish my email or IP address, thanks!
My suggestions to add to the list:
1. Bluetooth/internet sync for calendar — this needs to be synced more often than
a full iTunes sync
2. iChat
I would like to see a hooker button that I could press and see the rates, photos, and location of all the ho’s in my area! It could be tied to maps somehow! Now that’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout! See y’all out on the course! I’m *still* seachin’ ya know!
What about an option to re-map the keyboard as dvorak? I use dvorak on my laptop and love it and would like to be consistent and besides it’s faster.
Feature: I’d like to see the ability to open a link in another “tab” in Safari.
Feature: I’d like the ability to bookmark a page in Safari on the iPhone.
Bug: when you exit Safari and then return, it doesn’t always remember which tab it was on.
Feature: I’d like to see other tabs be able to load contents in the background.
Bug: sometimes pages seem to loose their contents and have to be reloaded when you switch tabs and/or exit/re-enter Safari. Also, Safari sometimes crashes which is a bug not a feature request but obviously I’d like to see it fixed.
Bug: Music stops when surfing (I believe the iPod application is actually crashing).
Bug: Intermittently I can’t seem to unlock my iPhone while it is in the dock being charged.
Bug: Keyboard responsiveness in web forms in Safari is inversely proportional to page length.
Feature: I would like to see some means by which mail rules could be applied when my computer is not on. I subscribe to many mailing lists and I have rules which move messages into folders for each list and then I wish to actually see messages which aren’t moved. Some of these lists are high volume, so I’m being alerted more often than I would like for new mail. This is using .mac mail.
Feature: Alerts for email are currently causing my phone to vibrate AND music to fade briefly while it vibrates/chimes. It should really do one or the other. I want lots of notification for a call, but minor notification for email or text messages.
Bug: The WiFi on the iPhone won’t stay connected to the network at my office. iStumbler reports the vendor as 00-16-9C (whatever that means). It might be not configured correctly, but my MacBook Pro has no trouble staying connected. We have 3 iPhones in my office and they all have this same problem.
Things I’d like:
1) Missing software:
1.1) Virtual Keyboard on demand: a way to call the keyboard anytime from anywhere and type in
1.2) Configurable keyboard: using a file definition of the keyboard (international settings or alternate settings)
1.3) Copy, Paste & clipboard
1.4) Everything should work in landscape mode as well (including keyboard)
1.5) OS X Finder with search
1.6) Launcher configurable and working also in landscape
1.7) Disk mode
1.8) Manual management of music
1.9) Voice dial
1.10) User defined ring tones (including itunes songs)
1.11) Support of Flash
1.12) Support of Java
1.13) Capability to build applications for the iPhone (not only Web)
1.14) E-book reader (eReader)
1.15) Chat
1.16) To-do list that could be synchronized with the computer
1.17) Notes widget enhanced to be synchronized with the computer
1.18) Use the camera to record movies
1.19) Record voice
1.20) Full bluetooth with sync through bluetooth and send file capability, external mouse and keyboard
1.21) MMS
1.22) Use the iPhone as a modem for the computer
1.23) Unlocked phone
1.24) Create custom folders in Mail
2) Hardware changes:
2.1) Removable battery
2.2) SD slot
2.3) GPS
2.4) Web cam doubled with another one in the front of the iPhone => use as a webcam
2.5) Connect to a TV set to display movies or pictures (same as iPod)
2.6) Active USB port
Add support for the Flash Player.
Play WMV/WAV files from the mail interface. Maybe it already does this but I can’t listen to the voicemails that get emailed to me on my VoIP phone through the interface for some reason.
#1 Request - VOICE DIALING
I want an iPhone, but I cannot live without voice dialing. (And this means voice dialing of any contact in the contacts list.) In fact it is not safe to use the phone while driving without voice dialing. I have to assume this will be a software upgrade since there is already a speaker & microphone in the device.
Please make it soon…
# I’d like a shell and ssh pre-installed. One of the main attractions to OS X was the ability to utilize all things unix. This is the only reason why I didn’t buy one.
This is not a full version OSX - it’s just like WIndows and Windows Mobile. yes it’s windows but stripped down.
# I would like to welcome screen (i.e., screen displayed before the iPhone is unlocked) to show the next iCal event, unread messages, etc. (what is displayed should be chosen by the user)
why don’t we make it like the Windows Today screen. Bad idea. I don’t like the information being on my screen without me requesting it. Perhaps an OPTION to do that and not to do that under settings.
Another request:
I know people have said you can turn off the SMS preview under Settings / General / Passcode lock
I think that is a bad place for that option and should be under General.
Ability to italicize and bold text in mail/mail sig
i miss buttons :*(
A TO DO LIST!!!! For crying out load its already in the current version of ical. Syncing notes would be great also.
• an option to rotate the phone without the screen re-orientating itself. sometimes i would like to see a photo or file landscape and portrait.
• an option to click and drag on a website without scrolling so i can rate my netflix movies.
• a bank registry program such as quicken.
• the ability to just drag songs and videos right to the iphone and the ability to do it from more than one itunes account.
• mass deletion of emails.
To all those requesting MMS — why beg for yesterday’s protocols? Don’t be embarrassed that you can’t MMS pictures to your friends! Be embarrassed for them, that they don’t have real email!
Wrap your mind around it. This is a better way to do things. It’ll just take a little while for others to catch up. A special protocol just for transmitting pictures is lame.
From my blog
iPhone accessories/features je veux
A couple iPhone accessories I would buy and features I would appreciate
In the car:
Full iPhone auto integration: Installation of this system will allow the iPhone over bluetooth and/or wireless to play music over the car’s sound system, play videos on an auto LCD screen, such as the ones that currently are used to play DVD, and automatically set answered phone calls to speakerphoned when they come through. A cable to charge the iPhone would certainly be a part of this set up
Garage door setup: Use the iPhone’s wireless capabilities to have it control the opening and closing of your garage doors
GSM: Not much more to add here, except maybe external GSM that integrates into Google Maps. I don’t actually think you need GSM, unless you get lost, but it would still be cool. If you’re not lost, its not a HUGE deal to just type in a start address, and let the machine know when you’re turning.
At home:
Airport control: A really cool feature of iTunes is Airport, where there’s a computer in room A that’s wirelessly streaming music to an Airport in room B that’s connected to speakers. However, there is no way of controlling that music without being in room A to have access to the music library. So, you use your iPhone to control music that’s being played over Airport! Have a widget called Airport that lets you choose which computer’s music you’d like, select a song, and the iPhone will stream the music from that computer to the speakers. And if you are visiting a friend’s house with your iPhone, stream music from your iPhone to your buddy’s Airport-connected-speakers.
In Class:
Keyboard: I don’t care how good the keyboard on the iPhone is for typing short emails and SMS messages, I would like to be able to use the iPhone to type notes in class by plugging it in to a keyboard with a dock for the iPhone. Except with a twist. I think the iPhone could be much more useful in landscape mode for typing notes, so the dock connector would plug into the iPhone horizontally instead of vertically.
Other:
Slideshow: While presenting a Keynote or powerpoint presentation, the iPhone display a thumbnail of each of the slides coming up. This would be especially useful if slides have been prepared to answer questions the presenter considers may be asked of him, as he could pick the slide he has prepared that is relevant to his answer.
Word Processor, Spreadsheet: Well Apple isn’t going to get a lot of help from Microsoft for creating a mobile word processor/spreadsheet for the iPhone, but Apple is already on pretty good terms with a company that offers simple word processing and spreadsheet solutions: Google with Google Docs! I say Apple should bring Google Docs to a form that compliments the iPhone similar to the way they brought Google Maps to a form that is very complimentary to the iPhone. I think that level of integration would be phenomenal.
Facebook app for iPhone: Let me do all of my facebook stuff without having to actually go to the website. Im talking about News feeds, who’s written on my wall, maybe even see my friends’ albums in the same way iPhone displays the user’s albums. Also having a photo upload feature specific to the iPhone would be great! And you can’t forget seamless status updates.
Remote Play for iPhone: You know PS3-PSP connectivity? Use the same theory to stream any video from your computer directly to your iPhone without having to sync it. How is this useful you may ask? Well personally I just want to watch the Daily Show in my sunny backyard, and not have to worry about syncing the most recent episode every day.
EDGE with a computer: iPhone plugged into your Mac? (or PC?), no WiFi reception? No worries, if Apple would allow that computer to surf the web with a full screen using the iPhone’s connection
And Finally,
iPhones in Canada: I want one, NOW!!!
Document Reader. I posted about this in my comments on my blog, but in a nutshell - since the iPhone is presumably using a variant of Quick Look from Leopard to read docs from emails, it seems odd to me that there’s no simple means of syncing PDFs, Word docs and Excel docs over to the iPhone. It is a much better device to read on than my old treo, but there’s no easy way to do this.
In theory, you could mail yourself the docs - however, when I’ve tried this with large PDFs (e.g., manuals and such), the iPhone craps out when downloading them, so no luck.
how about a non crippled blue tooth, maybe sync through wifi too, airtunes would be nice but could be asking too much
the ability to send attachments to e-mails when replying instead of having to start an entirely new email.
mms messaging.
ability to turn pictures off when browsing on safari with edge for faster load times.
and how about the ability to record videos?
future wants:
a2dp, 3g, video calls, flash on camera, louder when against ear
Is there any way for you to assign different ringtones to different contacts?
For the life of me I can’t see how to do it, but the first cell phone EVER could do that. PLEASE HELP!! This is crazy!
I use the prepaid plan with my iPhone. I love the prepaid option, HOWEVER after EVERY call/text/vm retrival i get an update on my remaining pre-paid balance. It’s extremely annoying. There needs to be an option to disable this silly feature.
how about using the iphone as a fancy front row remote control
1. Task list / better multi-calendar support for calendar application
2. Integrate IM with the current text conversations, meaning you could start a text conversation with a person, have that person log into a network that you are connected to, and have the conversation transparently continue over the IM network. And vice versa. There would obviously be preferences and visual clues to let you know what’s going on.
I want a iphone so bad… I’ve been dreaming with one but I’m not getting one any time soon i have my reasons to wait. I want it because of the looks and because it is the hottest gadget u can have right now. After i get i know that i will get sick and switch to my old motorola. I know people will be asking me y? First I really love to custumise my phones. I like to change wallpapers get wallpapers online and send to my phone i know you can do that with iphone but i would love to put a wallpaper o at least change the color of the background where the bottons are in the iphone. I like to make very personal. Second ringtones what was apple thinking i don’t really know that many people that haven’t bought a ringtone…. because they get tired of the ones that come on their phone. I think its one of the first things i do when i get a phone. Third bluetooth… apple apple you reminded me of VERIZON… i think you two were made for one another like to keep their products very basic.. You can’t even sync using bluetooth… apple again… even the treo 650 the old one remember let’s u sync via bluetooth. I really would like to sync, use the use as a dial-up networking… i don’t care if is EDGE at least i’ll be getting something worth the money im spending… lets see custumization, ringtones, bluetooth, ah and flash, come on flash. Apple you sell ringtones, let users download free widgets like on the mac, and sell wallpapers, and applications. OH please let games come out too. what is a phone in a doctors office where you can’t listen to music because u are waiting for ur name to be called…. u need games. come on apple step it up. I don’t care about 3g i understand that because of the US not being fully cover by 3g you couldn’t lunch a product that only certain part of the country will be able to get. But get ur stuff together. I know that you can do that in the updates. Step it up or someone will step up before u do. That is some of the reasons to wait for the the new or the update of iphone.
Owners manual for those that did not know about it
# “To all those requesting MMS — why beg for yesterday’s protocols? Don’t be embarrassed that you can’t MMS pictures to your friends! Be embarrassed for them, that they don’t have real email!

Because not everyone has the ability to EMAIL me pictures. I’d like to be able to see that someone sent me something since I’m still charged for receiving picture messages that never arrive!
No Contract with AT&T and let iPhone to be sold independently
(ok this is my 3rd time trying to post this, my other posts show up fine)
My requests:
-does the iPhone support e-911??
-cut/copy/paste option
-MMS (at LEAST receive, send would be great)
-email attachment handling (add from compose, and save)
-better call history details
-direct access to address book on iPhone
-AIM support
-full bluetooth support (very limited now - think of a BT keyboard awesome)
-on home screen (and other screens) the top row where the clock is would be nice to add counters for SMS/email etc just like when the device is locked there is a small lock icon on the top row.
-louder notifications for things (new email, new SMS etc)
-custom ringtones (phone and events)
-to have all apps rotate not just web and iPod.
-tap the battery icon and see a percentage remaining (can on macbooks).
-probably a far fetch but BlackBerry Connect would be cool
to assign different ringtones to different contacts you need to go to your contacts, then highlight the person you want and then hit edit. in there you will be able to assign ringtones to your contacts.
I can’t live without an ereader for downloading books. I know the iPhone supports pdfs, but I it doesn’t sound like (or at least I can’t find information on whether) you can read Adobe pdf books on an iPhone.
I also would really like to be able to tether to my powerbook.
haven’t gotten mine yet, it was delivered by fedex today and I’m still out of town.
The phone should automatically route calls over wifi when you are within wifi range, saving you cell minutes.
I want full quicktime, full flash, and to be able to receive picture and video messages. Multiple recepient texting, GPS, multiple signatures, and locked contacts with a pin number.
The iPone should remote Front Row on mac and on Apple TV !
waiting for all above from Belgium !
A lot of good suggestions on here. I won’t repeat (knowingly) ones already listed.
1. Camera setting - Go to View Mode
I’m ok with the fact that there’s not even 1 camera setting, but here’s one I would like to see: it’s somewhat unsettling that after you take a photo you’re taken right back into camera mode. Seems that some people want to be able to view the photo they’ve just taken right away, instead of being put right back into camera mode. I could see this being configurable (either length of time you see the shot you just took or whether to go into View Mode after you take a shot)
2. IM client.
I know that this is a shot in the dark since i’m sure at&t likes to see SMS revenue, but you know, IM *is* in fact different than SMS….
3. Keyboard tweaks
- the keys should properly be shown in uppercase or lowercase depending on the context
- common punctuation, like periods, should be handled better (that little trick about holding down the symbol key and sliding your finger to the period might be good enough … not sure)
- been said before and worth repeating: HORIZONTAL KEYBOARD
- offline dictionary editor. would be nice if there was more transparency on the dictionary so i could see/edit some of the custom words (custom words only)
4. Bluetooth modem (ok was probably said before)
5. Customizable home screen (ok, was said before)
- list recent appointments
- swap out icons on the buttom
6. True Exchange functionality (not just IMAP)
MAJOR ISSUE:
* When using EDGE to browse the web, all incoming calls will go straight to voicemail. This is a limitation with current implementation of EDGE. The phone should prioritize a phone call over internet browsing and at least pop up a message saying that there is an incoming call. AT&T has to upgrade the network to implement this.
— To test this: 1) turn off Wifi. 2) Open Safari to a long loading webpage 3) dial the phone from another phone
— For more information, (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=323645)
Apple: iPhone is a phone first .. and an iPod/internet device second
Other would like:
* Be able to scroll a webpage using the scroll bar instead of flicking.
* Separate the Recent Calls into Outbound and Inbound calls
802.11x AKA WPA-Enterprise support
* tdang
Thanks so much! It’s funny, you don’t even see a ringtone category until you hit EDIT. Most phones list everything you can edit when you look at the contact. Not that Apple should do this, I’m probably an idiot, but still, why not just show the ringtone at the bottom of the contact’s entry?
Here it is.
1. An ICON on every window that opens up a list of apps (i.e. START) so you can multi-task or get from here to there w/o going ‘HOME’.
2. COPY, CUT & PASTE from anywhere to anywhere (preferably in a screen shortcut like swiping across the screen & performing a gesture like swipe c, swipe v, swipe z)
3. SOME KINDA FOLDER SYSTEM! I need to be able to download my attachments and shove them somewhere.
4. TASK MANAGER with alerts, not just a calendar & a notepad.
5. SEARCH feature to search for ANYTHING on my iP, a name, a number, a document, a file, a picture. (PALM had this right)
6. Let me download a picture and shove it in my photos, not just gawk at it.
7. VCARDS (.vcf) I want to be able to email myself or pick-up a vcard and have it go into my contacts with out passing go & collecting $200.00
8. ROTATING is wicked cool, let everything do it!
9. REARRANGE & REORDER i Googled for an hour trying to find out how to reorder my email accounts, stock lists & photo albums NADA, lemme drag & drop everything, please.
Those are the Must Haves - I’ll get back with a ’should have’ list
I think they should add a search feature in the contacts bar. When somebody like me has 1200 contacts they will get mixed up in different letters. an optional search bar should be included.
If we’re wishin’:
GPS
VOIP
E-Reader
AM/FM Radio
Voice Recorder
Voice activated dialing
40 Gig Hard drive
Stream live TV
Video Out like 5G iPod
Voice recognition software
Mini laser projector for display
Projector for virtual keyboard
Audio Translator
Ability to measure distance by shooting a laser beam at a wall or ceiling
Scanner that would interpret printed text into electronic text
Waterproof
Use Kodak’s new technology that doesn’t require a flash for the camera
10X optical zoom
3+ megapixels
Documents to Go
1. Open SDK (if this is done, many of the items below don’t have to be done by Apple)
2. Scripting language (would like both, but could potentially cover for 1)
3. Bluetooth GPS and bluetooth HDD (WIFI HDD would be acceptable)
4. Copy and Paste
5. IM chat program (if you have this, MMS seems pretty pointless)
6. Integration with Keynote (would be nice if you’re giving a presentation that you could navigate the presentation on the phone, and then hit ‘Change’, and have the correct slide shown)
7. A terminal (yes, most people don’t care to ssh from their iPhone, but for some of us, it would actually be a very useful feature).
8. No duration of call appears after making a phone call
9. Purchase of music from iPhone
10. Games! I can imagine a lucas arts styled game would work well (they were mostly point and click, so I imagine additionally being able to zoom on items would add a cool new dynamic to the game)
Instant messaging.
Terminal Terminal Terminal - I could work on the server from anywhere.
Oh yeah and all the things you said too.
Ability to save photos from Safari or set your wallpaper stright from Safari!
1) Put it on a real phone network. AT&T is a joke.
2) Add 3G. The fact this isn’t on there already is a disgrace. EDGE is worthless.
3) Keyboard in landscape mode
4) Higher storage capacity. 8Gb for $600 is a rip-off.
5) Lower price. The 8Gb should be no more than $250 with a 2 year contract.
6) Push email. For business, even my year-old Q makes this thing look like a toy.
7) Add video to the camera. You know, like pretty much every single cell phone has by now.
Add Copy/Paste ability
9) Tethering (wired or wireless through BT)
10) User removable battery
For a first try, the current version isn’t bad. The OS is amazing, but as a whole I find it to be unacceptable for the price. I have a Moto Q with a 2Gb MiniSD card and Opera. It does everything the iPhone does plus it has 3G and push email and cost $100 with a 2-year Verizon contract.
here, i posted my comprehensive list of gripes:
http://lonelysandwich.tumblr.com/post/4878402
here’s the text in full:
iPhone v1.0 GRIPELIST
after i had opened it, synched it and spent about a minute with it, i made a pronouncement: “this is the best piece of technology i have ever owned,” and then i braced myself for laughter from my girlfriend and my buddy who’d spent the previous night in line with me. but they know i’m given to such pronouncements, so they for the most part ignored it. and my love for the iPhone grows deeper with each swipe and tap. but by its second day in my hand, i had begun to compile a little list of its pecadilloes, using the Notes app (which, itself, makes an appearance on my list). this is NOT a list of missing features (eg, GPS, video capture, flash, etc) which have already appeared on everyone else’s list. i have respect for the 1.0 nature of this thing, and that features must be rolled out in controlled doses, for the health of the product’s lifecycle and the acclimation of the user base at large. having preambled, here are some of my gripes:
1) let’s start with the Notes app, because here is where the list began: i can forgive the notepad metaphor. it’s kind of cute and it looks sort of neat when the pages are turned. however — i don’t need to see my thoughts represented by a ridiculous approximation of humanized handwriting - Marker Felt Thin, like someone else out there said, might as well be Comic Sans. i feel like the iPhone, in transcribing my ideas into magic marker, is belittling my mental acuity. i can at least think in Arial bold, if anything.
1a) no synching of Notes. sure i can email them. but that takes them out of their context, and i don’t like that.
2) this one’s out there already, but the ringtones? wow, awful. again, as a firm believer in ‘everything for a reason,’ i can only assume that Apple hopes, by offering us such lame defaults, to force us into the market for their deluxe iTunes-based offerings. if any ONE of the default ringtones were “good enough,” adoption of the ringtone-for-purchase model would be cut in half.
3) the predictive text is pretty damn good. still, i am used to being offered MULTIPLE options for T9’s predictions, not just what the dictionary presumes is the BEST option. it would be nice to be able to cycle to the next pop-up hinted word in the list instead of having the option of only accepting or ignoring the one suggested.
4) this one is quick - i want, compulsively, to play with my iPhone. and this makes me obnoxious to others, especially others without iPhones. therefore, the iPhone makes me obnoxious (yeah, the iPhone and other things).
5) no Preferences within applications. this model doesn’t really make sense to me - all Prefs are accessed through the one Settings area. does this mean that for any new app that’s introduced to the phone, the Settings will have to be expanded to include that app’s Prefs? seems kind of cumbersome for maintenance.
6) no voice recorder. i used this function constantly on my old phone. whether it be an idea for a song, or a spoken idea i couldn’t type out while driving, this was indispensible. Apple has always seemed media creation-centric, not just consumption-centric. and by excluding voice and video recording, they are positioning the iPhone as a media consumption device. which is fine, but maybe uncharacteristic. but not really, since it is a damn iPod.
7) taking a photo with the camera and adding it to a contact is really fluid - it is one of the processes i like to show off to people, but the one step that could use a little help is the crop/scaling. the iPhone tells me only that this is what my photo will look like when someone calls, but then it crops differently for the thumbnail. so when i take pictures and add them as contact photos, i usually just end up guessing where the person’s head would be cropped off and i reposition the image down accordingly. no markers to guide, which is strange.
the metaphors are mixed with the placement of Mail in the bottom of the Home screen, and SMS in the top. i know where to find them now, but it is counter-intuitive why they are separated. (or why Safari, iPod, and Phone are singled out as well.)
9) the lack of Copy/Paste functionality is criminal. now, it’s probably that Apple feared the users would become overloaded with gestures to learn, but (as has been suggested in other forums) the magnifying glass would aid in this function. i think that the slickest technique for Copy/Paste would be the following:
- tap and hold to place the magnifying glass cursor at the first desired character, then tap with a second finger, anywhere on the screen (or the thumb if the first finger is at an edge that wouldn’t permit the middle finger — this would trigger “selection mode”
- lift up and tap and hold to place the magnifying glass cursor at the second point (either before or after the first, just as in desktop-based selection) and trigger the end of “selection mode” with another second-finger tap
- this would trigger a pop-up menu of two options: Copy or Clear
- navigate the cursor to another insertion point, use the second finger to tap and hold, which triggers a pop-up of the last few selections copied to the clipboard
- select on item from the clipboard by tapping it and this will Paste the selection into place
10) EXTREME NITPICK HERE: the Home button is an elegant utility, but i wish it didn’t feel so chinsy and clicky - for an elegant and simple button, it sure has a huge audible and tactile footprint.
11) i LOVE the feature that allows you in the Contacts list to drag the scroll bar (as it were) to the desired spot in the alphabet, much like in any desktop-based browser or finder window. Apple should implement this in all windows of the iPhone, rather than making me endlessly swipe swipe swipe in the direction i want to scroll. i can see why they left this out initially - the reverse of directionality is confusing, which is why plug-ins like SmartScroll allow you to reverse the direction of your swipes to match the use of the scroll bar
12) the shutter graphic on the camera. boo. useless (as is the shutter sound effect, Pissing People Off Since 2002!!!).
13) regarding earbuds and phone calls: i claimed (to my enthralled self) a couple of years ago that one of the biggest hidden revolutions of the inevitable iPhone would be in its taking the typically mono telephone conversation to binaural (that is, in both ears, by the same medium as our music - earbuds). therefore, a more immersive experience, preparing us for the day that our telephonic conversations are crystal clear (an eventuality for which we need to be prepared). so this has definitely come to fruition in the iPhone. but the fact that unless my iPhone is in Silent mode, if i get a call, the ringer sounds both in my earbuds and in the speaker - it doesn’t really bother me, it’s just something to watch out for. it’s actually a feature. now i like it.
14) i quickly found myself propagating the Favorite contacts list. then i found myself over-propagating it. and a long shortlist is no shortlist at all - it’s just a confusion of little black letters on a white background. it would be Awesome if my Favorite contacts had their thumbnail images next to them. i already know that my girlfriend’s picture is predominantly green, because she was sitting on the grass with our dog when i took it.
15) when i delete a Note, i get a shrinking/minimize special effect to take it to the trashcan. when i delete an email, same thing. how about some consistency and use the effect in the Safari tabs when i use the little red X to close a tab?
16) as far as i know, there is no way to mass delete emails. and spam was put on this planet for this specific reason - the aesthetic satisfaction of mass deleting email. let’s work on that, Apple!
17) most phones with dedicated keyboards put this (annoying) feature to use by allowing entry of text to filter lists (of contacts and such). in my iPhone’s contacts and bookmarks and such, i would love to have a little keyboard icon to pop-up and allow me to enter the first letters of the name or item i’m searching for. that would be great. thanks.
i’m sure there are more to come, but this is a substantial list. you may agree with some, you may agree with none, you may agree with all. welcome to Costco, i love you.
Great ideas so far. Another one: The weather icon should be dynamic. In other words, instead of just displaying 73 degrees on the icon, it should reflect the current weather in your local area rather than the user having to go to the application just to see the current temperature.
Oh I got another one - just like someone else suggested earlier with mail messages - ability to select multiple messages to be deleted. The same concept should be applied to SMS messages as well.
The alarm sounds out loud even when the phone is in silent mode. There should one more setting while we set alarm… whether it is a wakeup alarm or a reminder alarm. The wakeup alarm rings loud even when the phone is in silent mode whereas the reminder alarm will only vibrate when the phone is in silent.
Aside from a lot that I have already read, I’d love an RSS reader accessable from the home screen.
Cut and paste could use the top sleep wake button to select text. Bring up the cursor movement circle zoom display and then hold the sleep wake button to select text. Once the test is selected use an up gesture to copy. To paste brink up the cursor movement circle and then with another finger touch the circle.
Full podcast management.
1. Subscribe to podcasts (audio or video) from the iPhone
2. Download new podcast episodes straight to the iPhone
I sent a iPhone camera pic via email to http://www.ScanR.com and then to myself to check the following limitation:
Emailed pictures are re-sized to 640×480 even though they are actually twice that size when synced to the Mac. When synced to iPhoto they are full-size.
“CONTACTS SEARCH with KEYBOARD in addition of scrolling” - When making a phone call or looking for a contact, instead of scrolling through names I’d like to type the 1st letter of the first name and then the last name and it should find the contact - this has been available on treos for ever and I can’t tell you how valuable this feature is for a real fast lookup.
Support of alternative keyboard input methods from 3rd parties, like:
Z1 (from ForWord Input, Inc.)
TenGO (from Xrgomics)
I have had problems with WEP password Wi-Fi. After extensive trouble-shooting I ended up assigning the MAC address to the Netgear wi-Fi router. This required the iPhone to be listed as an “approved device” under the advanced settings of the router. Since the MAC address was programmed into the netgear settings (my me), other devices not on the approved device list cannot gain access to my Wi-Fi network. This is important since I had to turn off any kind of WEP protection.
Need a more robust WEP set-up on the iPhone.
Non-secured Wi-Fi’s work great, BTW
One other important feature is turn that home button into a D-PAD!. If the iPhone had a D-Pad instead of a Home button I could navigate most of the features on the phone without touching the screen. I have a PPC-6700 and I go days without touching the screen because of the D-Pad. It can still be the home button just hold it for 3 seconds and it goes HOME.
Seeing as this is so far down on the list, I doubt it will be read, but anyway. About the deleting multiple messages, and copy and pasting, I think there should be some way to highlight text, then from there new options appear such as Copy. The way to highlight something would be to put one finger on the first item (e.g. a letter, word, or message) in the range of items you want to select, then you slide another finger across the range, starting at the first item and ending at the last item.
Add radar to the weather widget. You can view cities by flicking left and right, but view a radar map by flicking up on the city.
instead of having a home button, shake the iphone to return to the main menu (using the built in motion sensor), like a etcha-sketch!
How about NOT having a recessed headphone jack in the next model of the iPhone??
WTF were you thinking Cupertino? You know those pretty pretty Bose QuietComfort 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones that you sell in your stores for $350?
Well I bought one just two days before I got the iPhone, and when I was expecting them to work with the iPhone (because the headphones were sold in your store), I was very disappointed when they didn’t.
And then you wanted me to buy a long ugly gray Belkin adapter, which looks like it will snap with the slightest pressure. Um… thanks! So, the next day I returned the headphones to your store. Loss of sales due to your lack of QA must suck.
You should fire who thought the headphone jack should be recessed. S/he obviously didn’t test a few of those headphones out.
1. A To Do list that syncs with iCAl
2. The ability to sign up a corporate account form Itunes. (But Apple is clueless when it comes to enterprise)
A removable battery, now granted I know this is something Apple can’t add to the current model, but I won’t buy one until I can replace the battery like I can with any other cell phone.
since there is not GPS chipset inside the iPhone, have google maps jump to the cell tower that you are currently logged on to….
Bought an iPhone, the biggest waste of money I’ve ever done… Somebody should take Apple to court for delivering a product so incomplete… Any lawyer out there?
Did somebody say “Fairies” ?
Just curious, because I’m always up for a quick game of Fairies…
Um, maybe I should rephrase that?
Kerberos support for the mail app.
Manually manage music through itunes on iphone’s ipod
Streaming Music!!! I sure would like to listen to internet radio on it, or even be able to stream mp3s from my home server. Grrr. It’s the biggest disappointment for me by far.
WiFi WPA 2 Enterprise level PEAP support is needed.
Ability to use a USB or Bluetooth keyboard.
The deal breaker for me is a time/billing app. I am on the road a lot and visit or work on multiple jobs every day. I need to be able to track my time on multible jobs, multible tasks. Then I need to get that info to a desk top app or at least to excel.
There should be messenger access on the IPhone such as Yahoo mobile messenger, MSN and or AOL messenger. Had it on all my old cheap phones.
I don’t know if someone has already requested this, but what’s up with receiving multimedia text messages? I have to collect the image via a web site with a crazy login- there should be a way to automatically go to that site with the login provided. Also, when I view a picture sent in this fashion, it doesn’t allow me to save it to my picture directory on the iphone…
Next generation should read fingerprints as you swipe to unlock. The unlock code can be pesky at times when you only have one hand to spare. The option of a code could be included as well, but a fingerprint read would be much faster.
Where’s the AutoText feature like the Blackberry OS has? It’s the best part about BB and Apple needs to take the hint! I don’t want to type out everything all of the time.
Listen to Internet Radio.
Create & edit using GoogleDocs.
Select sounds for all purposes (not just on/off).
It would be fun to see cover flow for contacts.
When a contact is found in goggle map, one should able to save the contact.
Should be able to save web pages for offline viewing.
Direct touch entry for events in calendar (see Palm).
Search ability in all programs.
Cursor keys on keyboard.
Sync iTunes through Bluetooth.
Cisco VPN support.
Let me turn up the volume on the earpiece and speakerphone. Just like #3 commenter above.
Access to AirTunes via an Airport Express on a LAN. Being able to use your iPhone as a jukebox and remote control during a party would be really cool. I could instantly change songs playing through the hi-fi from anywhere so long as I am connected to the LAN. It would almost certainly be a battery hog, but so what.
Per Neuron You can save to contact in google maps…if you click the blue arrow it brings you to a info page and at the bottom it gives you the option to create new contact or add to existing contact
Per Me…i think in the next update apple should include the ending time in the calender rather then just the start ime
1. Address Book photos should display full size when someone is calling. (You shouldn’t have to re-crop on the phone)
2. Send multiple photos in one email or MMS.
3. Search for Contacts and SMART contact groups should transfer.
4. Save Photos from email / web.
5. Mark email as Read / Mark All as Read
6. Sync with Bluetooth
7. Allow to change SMS sound / tone.
1. Add IPv6 2. Enable the IPSec 3. Enable Bonjour 4. Add JAVA Support 5. Add a task list. 6. Document interface to local SQL server.
Allow me to at least download files off my own computer onto the iPhone….or redirect it to the server that I’m connected to through my own Wi-fi connection.
Touch gestures, please. Remember Black&White? Now we have the most intuitive interface to do that.
We need the ability to drag and drop music/videos to the iPhone. This feature exists in the iPod already.
Opening up the iPhone so that any conceivable app can be added by other companies.
1. cyberme mentioned cisco vpn, would suggest nortel vpn as well, for corporate networks.
2. encourage 3rd party apps such as skype, and SIP clients.
3. ummm,..how about what every other mp3 player in the world has,..FM or am/fm radio.
4. Satellite radio such as Sirius or XM
5. the option of either GSM or CDMA networks, so we’re not locked into 1 carrier.
6. edge works,..what about 3G or evdo or wimax?
An ssh client would be great.
I’m going to list what several others have already…
TURN OFF SYNCING!!
I don’t want a COPY of my computer, I want a separate device, damnit.
I wish Safari on iphone does “search by address”, this is an incredibly useful feature in Firefox and translates to one less step for the user. Just type the word in the address bar and let the search engine do all the heavy lifting.
More Bluetooth options!! I second the item in the main post about using my Bluetooth GPS with Google Maps on the phone!! Plus supporting stereo bluetooth headphones with an integrate microphone!!
And, finally, mp3 ringtones and the ability to add a specific ringtone to a specific contact!
Plus up the storage to 200GB!! (okay, just kidding on that one, but if v2.0 gets 20GB, I’m going to be pissed I only got 8!!)
- mainly, what about security: at logon, crypted data (iphone filevault ?) and else … if you lost it, is stolen, else … (a way to disable/erase it)
does wifi and bluetooth have needed security options ? (802.11i)
- which protocol do they use to sync ? proprietary or syncML ? so it could be usable outside of itunes/MacOSX, most notably Windows, but also Linux and BSD.
- voicemail to read you email are good but what i REALLY WANT is answering email with vocal email or have vocal notes.
- Applications: pdf reading seems available, what about SIP or Secure SIP, ssh or else ?
- handwriting recognition ? (newton/inkwell)
VOICE MEMO FEATURE - Recording is already included and integrated when you record your voicemail but theres no actual memo feature. Executives and songwriters are missing out.
SMS to MULTIPLE PEOPLE
Currently unable to send a “Im heading to the bar” to multiple people in one instance
PROPER GMAIL SYNCING
The syncing on there presently is useless, marking everything in your online gmail as un read.
CONSISTENCY IN FF REW BUTTONS
I hate the ones for the movie player (looks like a Microsoft design) , but the moncoromatice ones that glow ipod music player (in coverflow) are cute.
ABILITY TO USE iPHONE AS REMOTE
Im used to using sailling clicker over bluetooth and using it as a remote for my applications. Would love to see sailling support
I am not sure if this is been mentioned … just too many suggestions to read through. I would like a simple way to share contacts - send a business card from my iphone via SMS, email, bluetooth or all of the above
Lets see
1. 3g network from ATT.
2. GPS transceiver for Google Maps and E911 (emergency locator)
3. video enabled camera (with more megapixels), zoom, etc.
4. iPhone SDK for 3rd parties (Skype or some kind of VOIP client when on Wifi)
5. Create ringtones from iTunes music (includes iTunes Store downloads)
6. if iCal calendars and Address Book contacts can’t be synced via Bluetooth then why not?
7. and (as mentioned before) MMS messaging.
What happens if you sync the iPhone to another Mac or PC other than the one you first activated the phone on, do you have to reactivate?
More Bluetooth support. I don’t even think the out of the box bluetooth does anything. Why even have bluetooth if you can’t use it.
1. A2DP is a must for a music phone. WTF was Apple thinking?
2. Bluetooth/Wifi Syncing
3. Bluetooth Transfers to other phones and devices
How about syncing To Do Lists from iCal? Seems like an obvious one to me. U
I haven’t seen this yet: VIDEOCONFERENCING! This could be done with a 2nd camera or–even cooler (cheaper?) –with the built-in camera being able to swivel to the face of the iPhone when you’re on a call, then swivel back to be used as a camera. I’d love to see a commercial with a woman using the iPhone as a mirror to do her makeup. I’d love to get a free iPhone for this suggestion!
A2DP Support. The device already supported Bluetooth, so it’s only a software addition. The device should be able to wirelessly play music to bluetooth headphones (in stereo), as it is a bluetooth 2.0 device.
Calculator is kinda embarrassing. My Treo had a financial calculator I used A LOT and I really miss it. I didn’t realize how important it was for my job - Palm also had weight and distance converters, etc which I’m sure many people found helpful.
Search for the Calendar a MUST. You have the technology with spotlight already. I NEED not want - I NEED to be able to search through my calendar. I have made sales just because of that one feature. I’m more business - but it would be really helpful for less business mined folks too I’m sure.
iTunes:
- Better support for syncing with multiple computers. With old iPod, could drag music in iTunes from multiple computers, with iPhone, only option is to sync with a single computer. Same situation with photos, if I want to add photos from another computer, my only option is to delete all the photos currently on the iPhone and sync the new ones.
Phone:
- When adding/editing a contact, ability to change Group contact is in
Mail:
- Ability to delete multiple messages
- Ability to mark messages as read without opening the whole message
- Rules like in Mail
- Multiple signatures
Safari:
- Ability to set a homepage, and a home button on the bottom toolbar
- Experiencing occasional random crashes
iPod:
- Randomly crashes when also using Safari
- Repeat option (once album reaches the end, I want it to go back to the beginning; repeat single song; etc.)
Calendar:
- More customizable repeat options, like in iCal. (Ex: If I want to repeat an event only on M,W,F of each week)
- When setting an alert for an event, it would be cool to use the same interface that the Clock app uses to set alarms.
- Ability to categorize events like in iCal.
SMS:
- Multiple recipients
General:
- System wide use of landscape view & keyboard
- Instant messaging program
i. Scenario
1. A Caller is Incoming and is recognized as someone already in the contacts/customer database as is normal for the Iphone.
2. You Answer the Call
3. An Option appears that offers to Create an Appointment (calendar event), a note, or an email, which will link to the contact/customer record that you are currently speaking with.
=========
ii.
Allow dialing of any phone number from anywhere in the system. Calendar events would certainly be enhanced by this feature.
=========
III.
I have nearly 4,500 contacts and I keep 5 years worth of past calendar events for the information value (takes up very little room in the Iphone), ….. Please…. a “Global Search” similar to my Imac or a search of contacts and calendar would allow me to finally get rid of my Treo 700P (I keep the Treo around just to search these databases)….. Please !!!!
=========
Thanks Apple, Inc., I know that you are probably monitoring comments.
And Thanks for a Great device.
To solve the problem of searching for contacts/music/anyting on phone, just add Spotlight to the home screen!
You should be able to have groups/folders of favorite contacts or just contacts period.
1. make an inbox for all your accounts and offer the ability to filter to each individual account’s inbox. this way I can stop going in between inboxes all the time.
2. add an smtp server so we can send out emails on any network!
3. add filters for email so that we can stop gmail from sending us sent messages all the time.
The main concern for me besides the lack of MMS is the iPhone’s inability to work with most 3rd party headphones out of the box. I think we need a revised headphone jack.
Syncing contacts/calendars with a .Mac account via the web.
How about an option to remap the keyboard to Dvorak?
There is a way to type the period in a shorter way:
http://corelife.be/2007/07/07/iphone-period-typing-shortcut/
I only want java mobile support. No self-respecting smartphone lacks this feature and with good reason. J2ME support gets you several good instant messaging clients, opera mini (much better than safari in low-bandwidth situations), an ssh client, a vnc client, and lots of great games. Most of the feature requests can be provided for by this single feature. I won’t buy the iphone unless it has j2me support.
• Of course — widescreen keyboard across *all* applications. And, for that matter, landscape viewing across all applications.
• Ability to delete (or hide) .Mac email messages *without* them being deleted from server. At home, I often have 20 or so messages in my inbox, until they’re processed. But on the iPhone, I constantly have to wade through all of those messsages. On my Treo (now a paperweight), I could delete email at will — and it would still remain visible on my computer. (The user was given the option of deleting from the server or not.) But on the iPhone, I deleted a bunch of messages — only to discover them also deleted at home.
• Ability to edit contacts from the favorites list. Presently, you have to switch to contacts, then locate that contact in the list (I have 2,500), then tap Edit.
• Display photos next to contacts.
• Syncing via Bluetooth.
• Fix the Safari crashes.
• Fix the map crashes.
• Allow 3rd-party applications.
• Add preference to have “Hide My Caller ID†button appear each time a call is made. Again — just a preference — so not everyone has to see that button.
• Volume control to make SMS sounds louder.
DELIVERY STATUS Widget !!!
In the Home Screen
I would like a sent tones function. I often use it with my other phones when making long distance telephone calls via calling card and I can’t remember the long international number of the person I am calling.
Would also like a search function in Safari.
Would also like ability to crop and rotate photos.
how a bout FireFox and other thridparty software.
Documents syncing & viewer!
There should be a tab in the iTunes interface for the iPhone that lets you select documents to sync with the iPhone. On the iPhone, there would just be a Documents app/viewer program. It should support at least text, Word & Excel, RTF, and AppleWorks docs. Ideally it would also support Photos. Photos selected to be sync’d would just appear in the Photos section of the phone. No reason why somebody should have to deal with another app (iPhoto) to sync an image.
I know that you can email text/Word/Excel docs to the iPhone, but this is a real pain for documents that get modified with any frequency, and having to access documents as attachments in an email program is also cumbersome. (Also, the current mail viewer doesn’t even support RTF or AppleWorks docs…)
Oh, and in the iPhone’s Mail app, if a received email includes a document (or photo), you should be able to save the attachment to the docs or photos folder on the iPhone.
I have an extension that I use in Firefox that tells me how many mins. I have left on my account for the month.
It would be awsome if this was built into the iPhone. Not only mins. use/mins. left but also how many text messages you have used.
what I would like to see on the iPhone I’d the ability to put a phone number into your calendar or notes and be able to call from it instad of having to to back into tour contacts list or having to look for it some other way.
i know, while we are at it, why not the ability for time machine and even spaces. Heck why not even expose and spotlight.
ITS A PHONE NOT A COMPUTER…stop asking for so many things. Just cos you ask for them doesn’t mean apple will make them.
iTunes store.
This should be a no-brainer, let me buy stuff straight to my wi-fi / edge device and reverse-sync it back to my computer. Easy win for Apple, including being able to have a new statistic: “x number of songs / videos sold via the iPhone.”
A proper Gmail app or some other sort of enhanced Gmail support.
more user defined widgets…why not let us put some dashboard on the iPhone…i was scrolling through my default weather widget today and wished it was sports instead come on apple lets add some more widgets
o an ps. can you get a little more worthless with stocks?
You probably have heard this already, but you seriously should support aol, msn, and yahoo instant messanger.
- How about the ability to save files….. ‘at a minimum’ give me the ability MP3’s and pictures off the internet onto the iPhone. Would be great to go to some picture sight and be able to save a few pictures and set it to wallpaper, email it to someone, etc…
It would also be nice if it allowed me to download any type of file as a way to transport files. Also… no brainer… download songs/podcasts off ITunes over wireless.
- Also… how about a secure password storing tool that I can store all of my passwords in… I was talking to a buddy of mine who has one for his Treo and he says he will not buy an iPhone until they support a tool like this…or have a 3rd party app that does it.
- Enhance the weather widget to also give me hour by hour forecast for the current day.
- Not sure why but anytime I send a Gmail email it shows up in my inbox as if it was a new email… This seems like a bug.
1. fax
mac os x can fax anything it can print as long as it’s connected to a phone line. the iphone has “mac os x” and IS a phone line. maybe faxing is a possibility?
2. importing/saving
ability to import/save photos, music, and videos from email attachments (and hopefully MMS, in the future) into Photos and iPod.
Aww Man! It dosn’t do everything I ever wanted in a phone plus more!!!!???? PLEASE, all of you DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! We don’t want you coming into the store bitching about these stupid issues!
Make the iPhone available to Verizon customers. I think it’s a great phone, but I can’t switch over to AT&T. Plus, so many people have Verizon.
theres no way of downloading instant messengers?
v cast
SKREEN KAPTURE! yeah, a screen cap would be a great thing, to email others maps, stock quotes, web pages, and configurations.
iPhone - I would take note of the T-Mobile Sidekick and emulate the keyboard on that devise - it really is the easiest cell phone to type on and the iPhone with it’s shape not unlike the Sidekick would be much easier to type on in horizontal vs. vertical - that is a must for anyone who SMS’s and SMS must be fixed before they go live abroad because it is used much more than in the US.
1. The ability to change the text message alert sounds. How about the ability to change all alert sounds!
2. MMS - How in the world did they not add the ability to receive picture messages? This is bizarre to me
All in general…this phone is slakin on a lot OF THINGS…that they hsouldnt have not…NOT WORHT ITS PRICE!! itll take them 6 more months or another year before mac updates this phone,,,i bought it…and returned it…displeased!!
Glad I didn’t buy one of these things! My phone is sufficient.
How about the ability to select embedded hyperlinks in enhanced podcasts?
ability to automatically change ringtone depending on where you are…i.e. if you’re at the movies the phone goes onto vibrate mode
FLASH
AIM
MORE APPPS
Radio feature. The IPhone is was based off the ipod and music storage right? Well I would like to see a Radio feature on the phone so you can listen to local radio stations every now and then. Listening to the same songs in storage will get old and boring after a little while until you feel like adding and removing songs in storage. If it had a Radio on it, I would buy one.
You should be able to download a picture to your phone and save it. Also once you have a picture you should be able to forward your pictures to other phones instead of just emailing them the your friends and families email addresses.
In addition to “to-do” support… How about multiple calendars with different colors… Like iCal.
Tiny one: If you notice, the calendar icon shows the correct day of the month…. I’d like the weather icon to display the current temp/conditions for my ‘first’ location.
The ability to record video. Cell phones for the last 2+ years are able to do this, so why not the iphone.
I know I’m probably one of the 7 people who use their iPhone as an alarm clock, but the oversight of actually selecting from the music library is beyond me. I don’t want to wake up to a ringtone, i want to select from the 1,000 songs i put on the iPod. Come on, Apple, that’s easy. Step it up.
Contact Categories. OK i got used to having categories in my Treo. Now I miss it. I want to be able to see filters for restaurants, family, doctors, co-workers.
AT&T (cingular)cell coverage is, well absolutely lame. I am surprised that Apple would limit the iphone to just that service. They usually think way out of the box with their products, but they took a big step backwards with that choice and making it exclusive. I hope they allow users to make their own choice for providers in the future. Where I live…Verizon gives the best service and coverage. (No, I don’t work for Verizon)
So many comments here, hard to see if what I have to say was mentioned. I have seen the ringtones, volume issues, copy paste, landscape keyboard, etc. So I will try to avoid some of the obvious ones. I myself would like to be able to *save* an image or file that I find on the web. I would think at least picutures would be easy. Also since I only use the POP email feature (currently) I would like the way to make a new folder to put mail into. They have the option to move a message to another folder, but only options are Inbox, OutBox, Sent, Trash. I would like to be able to make a new folder such as *save* so I can move emails (such as an email with my resume) into it so I can have it at all times without always seeing it in my inbox. Finally, just a bug on the bookmark (making one) screen. The place to enter the name of the bookmark while it has the X to clear what is there by default, it doesn’t work. Also you cannot click and hold to zoom in and move the cursor. So you have to use backspace to clear it all and start over.
ipod:make scrubbing through podcasts and videos easier. If the programs are large, it’s very difficult (almost impossible) to move small amounts of program material (30seconds to 2 minutes). Suggest a flicking/sliding motion similar to that used in coverflow, but when in portrait mode use it to move through the program content.
How about a spellcheck in Mail!
Before I bought my iPhone I skinned my Q to look like it. One of the options was to have a transparent clock (lock screen on the iPhone is the closet comparison). Instead of showing a wallpaper the transparent clock was “over” the home screen. It would be awesome if the iPhone had this option. Instead of showing a wallpaper when the phone is locked the the clock and “slide to unlock” would be transparent over the home screen.
It would also be cool if there was an option to have the clock and and slide to unlock screen appear without the iPhone screens turning off.
Photohunt game for the iPhone which uses the touchscreen.
When fully charged it would be nice if the battery had some kind of charged symbol on it.
I have noticed that in the iPod mode if you decide you want to shuffle any thing other than the songs, it actually shuffles like the album feature on the actual iPod. For example, if i choose to shuffle a playlist that has a bunch of songs and albums, instead of a complete random order, once it comes to an entire album it will play that entire albume before moving on to another one. Just something to work out.
Phone quality for the iphone is not loud enough. You tube videos play so much louder. I need to hear my peeps when they call me. Car kit with voice activation would be awesome. Oh and MMS please mister Jesus Jobs. I’ll say a prayer for you”’
I really enjoyed reading these amazing suggestions. What a huge list!
I also wrote blogged about some features I’d like to see, most are presented here, I think
One that keeps getting overlooked.
When in lowercase mode the keys still appear Uppercase.
A simple software fix for apple
My main thing is to make the thing stop crashing. I have tried everything - Apple even swapped out my iPhone with a new one. Still, I get constant crashes from the iPod, Safari, and Maps applications, and occasionally from the calendar application (although this has only happened 2 or 3 times). But Safari crashes are incredibly common, despite multiple software restores.
- Email search functionality
- More than 200 email messages
- Contact Search
I would like to see finder added to the iPhone the finder would be able to add atatchment into safari pages and view all iphone files attatchments, itunes media, photos, contacts, safari downloads, ect.
I would also like to see full coco widgets from 3rd party developers
third itunes radio streaming and shared music streaming
Hi. I would like to suggest that they increase the camera’s mega pixels. Nokia’s N95 already has 5 MP with their camera; I’d like to see the next iPhone have a 7 MP camera, rather than a 2 MP one.
Support flash media.
Self portrait mirror.
Better volume while on calls and speakerphone.
Louder ring tones.
Update:
Self portrait mirror and a way to actually click the shutter so that you can take a self portrait.
Needs an instant messenger like Yahoo, etc!
Danger Sidekick 2 (better than Sidekick 3) has the absolutely easiest of all cell phone keyboards to type on.
Why can’t Apple improve the keyboard or make it work in landscape mode in all apps so it’s wider?!
I wish that the keyboard on the iPhone were easier to use and not make constant errors.
I can type very fast on my Sidekick 2 and make almost no errors.
I really don’t like the keyboard on my iPhone.
I make too many errors using my thumbs and I have been practicing for hours.
I have to use my index finger for accuracy.
I do not like typing on my iphone.
Here are my thoughts on some things on the wish list.
I agree with everything except password saving — NEVER NEVER NEVER
I would like to add that I wish there was a way to teach the keyboard/dictionary words. I have used the “notes” features extensively to keep track of my day and find myself retyping some of the same words all the time and they are words that my phone doesn’t know yet.
The ability to type in ALL CAPS — if it’s possible to do this I haven’t figured it out yet.
I would add for Safari to remember certain things like e-mail addressed, street addressed, etc. but NEVER NEVER NEVER passwords. That’s just a bad idea altogether.
1. the alarm clock needs a snooze - that you can click on w/o unlocking the phone.
2. Games - Sudoku, bejeweled, peggle, etc
3. Currently, the call lists are for All and missed. How about dialed and received as well?
4. Favorites lists a different line for each phone number. I want one line for each contact, and a submenu for their multiple contacts
5. I have thousands of contacts. using the letters to navigate doesn’t get me close enough.
here’s a request I haven’t seen - Have the weather and Time icons on the home page contstantly update like the Scdhedule does. I’m tired of seeing 73 and sunny. At least the schedule changes dates.
I will second the idea of updating the weather icon not sure if the clock should update continuously since its a pretty small display that would be hard to read
Adding to this the calender should have notification buttons on it when you have an event within a specific time frame..for example if i have a meeting today one hour before the meting a “1″ notification button should appear on the calender
PS: is this list being updated i have read many diff. ideas that should be put on the master list
Excellent list!
Windows users can access iPhone photos with any manager, or just go to ‘mY Computer’ where you can see your iPhone as a digital camera… I don’t know ifbyiu can put photos on this way, but I think I’ll go find out cause I hate iTunes lowering the resolution of photos I WANT to be able to zoom into.
How about letting me turn off the phone but not WiFi. I’ on vacation in a place with no cell coverage, but we do have WiFi here. My battery lasts only a day with the phone searching for a signal it is mever going to find.
I would like if there was an gps that could use the 30 pin connection at the bottom of the phone so it uses less battery life than blue tooth
Mine does dim the screen before it auto locks. Not when it’s plugged in - all the time.
To the people complaining about the recessed headphone jack: It’s recessed because of the physical interaction of the shape of the back and the cylinder of the jack. If you look closely, the closest point of the jack to the outer case is almost flush, but it’s the curve on the top edge that makes it seem recessed. The only ways around this would have been to make a cylindrical protrusion with the jack on top, make the whole thing thicker to put the jack on a flat surface, or make the hole around the jack as big as the biggest headphone plug in the world. I think none of these options were aesthetically acceptable to Apple. Their own headphones all work because they’ve had small jacks for years. Besides, unless you’re just using this as an expensive iPod, you’ll be needing the mic and button in the supplied headphones. Give it a while and I’m sure there will be third party mic / headphones that will work with the recessed jack.
BCC in Mail
I’m very surprised that these things aren’t on the official list in the post yet:
- JAVA and FLASH support. They’ve become so integrated into webpages, I don’t tend to notice them until they’re missing, then I feel cheated that I can’t load pages.
- STEREO BLUETOOTH AUDIO.
- CHAT! I don’t even personally use chat programs, but find it annoying that it’s not there…though I know why: AT&T can charge for text packages but it’s harder to charge for chatting when the plans all have unlimited data.
- ITUNES STORE. I’m shocked you can’t buy things directly from iTunes on Apple’s first iPod + internet device, it seems ridiculous. And weird, cause they could make so much money from that.
- SPOTLIGHT all over the place. Mail, contacts, music, calendars, it should be everywhere.
and a couple things that would be nice, but not as necessary:
- 3rd party apps can only be accessed through bookmarks at present…you should be able to add their icons to the home menu — this must be possible, even if they’re still only web apps.
- bluetooth data transfer should be available for everything…contacts, photos, music.
GadgetGav,
Yes, your iPhone dims right be fore it locks. That isn’t what I am talking about. We want a display sleep mode for when your phone is NOT set to auto-lock. The display should dim at some point, but will not. Leaving auto-lock on all the time is unnecessary and quite often annoying.
When you are listening to music, and the screen blanks and you turn it back on, it is locked but with the background as the cover of the music.
If there is a timer going, I’d like to turn the screen back on and see the status of the timer without having to unlock and go to the timer (or stopwatch).
More:
1) On Windows, Sync bookmarks with Firefox and Opera, not just IE and Safari
2) Ability to record memos using built in mic
3) Bluetooth headsets hear all audio - music, videos, everything - not just phone audio
How about being able to select info from Contacts when setting up an event in the Calendar. Many of my Calendar event are reminders to call or Email someone, I should be able to pull that info from the Contacts in into my calendar reminder, that way when I get the reminder, I can just tap on the phone number or Email in the reminder, rather than having to close out Calendar and then look for that info in the Contacts.
Improve Safari, it’s kinda buggy, especially when on the Edge network, I have has to re-boot the iPhone more than once when it has frozen. Sometime Safari just randomly closed itself and the iPhone returns to the main screen.
Open it up for developers to create REAL apps, not web apps. Web apps on the Edge network, have you tried to do real web stuff on Edge, reminds me of the days of dial up modem.
And last but not least, it’s been mentioned many times before, HOW ABOUT A FEW GAMES?
It is a truly unique item, for all the beautiful technology put into it and furthermore all of it left out. I want the ability to:
watch movies on every website, easily download audio music and movies through an iTunes icon, be able to obvisously text message mass amounts of people (I feel they left that out because of the e-mail function but text messaging many people at once is key for business - no wonder why some corporations aren’t fully ready to move on it yet). Why do the birthdays on contacts not notify you on that day that it is their birthday? Games would be good but further dimish the battery so whatever. Video would be amazing with this phone. Wow I just realized I need to play with my iPhone more.
- I trust all of you - think up some good shit - I am out - Make it Happen -
_AND FAST_
0. offline browsing! I want iphone to automatically download the New York Times — including all the article links — for me every morning so I can read it on the subway.
1. I hate how long it takes to skip forward to the next song when listening to music when the iphone is in my pocket. With my ipod, I could control playback with the clickwheen with my hand in my pocket without having to look at the damn thing. With iphone, I have to stop whatever I’m doing, take it out of my pocket, look at the screen, slide to unlock, click the ipod button, and then tap to skip forward. That’s really really annoying. It’s also frustrating because I don’t like taking it out and flashing it around on the subway, which is precisely when I’d most like to skip from song to song. I’d like to be able to assign music playback skip forward / backward to a physical button, e.g., the volume button, or perhaps the “home” button when the phone is locked.
2. dear god add a multiple-recipient SMS text feature so I can tell all my friends about my upcoming party. every other [non-smart] phone I’ve ever had has had this feature.
3. MMS messaging
4. “delete all” email messages or “mark all emails as read” — I waste so much time cleaning out my inbox its unbelievable.
5. let me assign mp3 playback instead of ringtones for the ringer, but also for alarms, clicks, and all the other sounds the machine makes.
A flash for the camera.
Or, a setting to allow more light when in a dark environment.
The camera does a very poor job in low light settings.
I was in a dimly lit restaurant and the camera was totally useless.
Bring back the handwriting recognition software from the Newton. it was really good, just got caughtup in the bad press resulting from a product (Messagepad)brought to market before it was ready.
1. Horizontal texting (makes it easier to grip iPhone and thumb type)
2. Modify iTunes to easily RIP DVD’s for playback on iPhone or iPod video
I find that when the phone is asleep and people call me (even when I have full service) the phone does not ring or vibrate even what it is not on silent and the ringer volume is turned all the way up. Furthermore, when I pick up the phone and go to unlock it it shows like the person is calling me at that second and the missed call times (even if its 5 in a row) say that I was called and missed the call at the exact time I unlocked my phone when I know this obviously isn’t the case. Is anyone else experiencing similar problems or is my phone just messed up?
Bigger send button in SMS, I keep hitting the ‘O’ or ‘P’
I’d like to reiterate the need for a period button on the main keyboard.
You can turn on music while in a phone conversation…I wouldn’t mind being able to have background music during a conversation but volume control changes music AND voice. How about separate volume control for the two.
Gestures to shortcuts…I’d like to use two fingers in a circular motion (or something) to pull up a favorite contact…
Calculator have tipping function
Multiple vibrates for text messages (my sony ericsson vibrated three times). I rarely feel it when I get a text.
And another thing! Would it kill them to give some kind of indication that you had messages waiting (either email, text, voice, etc) on the locked screen. The upper menubar shows indication of wifi signal strength, gsm signal strength, battery power and an indicator that the phone is locked (as if the big slider wasn’t indication enough) but no icon for messages. Even the free sanyo phones have a blinking LED when you have a message. So I have to unlock my phone and navigate to the home page to see if I have messages. Some will of course say, wahwahwah, but try to perform this function while driving with one hand and without looking down at the phone. I love my iPhone but the little things really irk me.
One more!
Enable drag and drop in iTunes. Syncing playlists is t e d i o u s.
One more, idk if this was posted or not, but how about a search feature for the iPod? im pretty sure the 5.5gen ipods have a search available, granted 4 or 8gb isnt a lot of music, but nevertheless, i would love to be able to save some time
I’d like to see custom fields in contacts syncrhonized with the iPhone. I use these as keywords for searching for contacts. Of course, this assumes that Apple will add a search feature… but that seems like a sure bet (I simply can’t imagine that they intended to leave this out… just couldn’t provide an efficient one in time?).
Here is an apparent bug: if you try to edit a line of text too close to the top of the screen, you can’t see the enlarged text in the “magnifying” glass because it is apparently off the top edge of the screen. In those cases, the magnifier should appear below (rather than above) the text to be editted.
One more… Please add a FM reciever! I would love to be able to listen to LIVE news or favorite radio stations.
When clicking in the safari address bar to enter a new web address, or entering text in a field on a web page, any existing text in that field should be highlighted ready to be typed over. Currently you must hit the “x” button next to the web address field, or you have to backspace if you are in a general text field.
Also, there should be an arrow back key on the keyboard that allows you to click past letters instead of having to delete and retype them. Although I like the magnifying glass feature, I think an arrow key would be faster in many situations.
I would like if apple came out with their own case for the phone and a dock that fit the phone with the dock. I hate the fact that i have to take off the case i have to use the dock but love the way the the phone sit in the dock on my table were I can see it across the room if some one calls
It would be very useful for us in the academic arena to be able to save pdf and other forms of documents on the iphone and also be able to access them without connecting to a computer. Professors and college students would like to have a device that they can use to search for papers, save and access them conveniently.
I’d really like other WiFi authentication methods to be supported - namely LEAP. We use LEAP at work and since the iPhone does not support it I am stuck with EDGE.
Please don’t spam me if I have my head up my ass, but I would a little chirp if I have a missed call or voice mail when away from the iPhone. Basic stuff!
A scribble app to jot down notes without the keyboard. Or, to use it to doodle. That would be especially handy.
osx makes the iphone into the first macintosh (mini ‘tablet’ or otherwise) that most windows users will have ever seen, touched, used (and called
but osx has a much lower profile in asia than it does in the rest of the world (for many reasons - some of them due to apple’s neglect, some of them due to other factors).
so, the iphone needs a killer app that is especially aimed at this new market: language learning - which is a HUGE thing almost everwhere in asia (eg, english scores have a heavy influence on university entrances). obviously there are lots of people outside asia who are also second language learners — but the biggest halo effect for macs would be the result of a killer osx experience for language learning on the iphone.
however, apple has long lost its focus on education - eg computer based technology (CBT) - so is no surprise that the mac (and by extension the osx based iphone) dont integrate what is needed, especially for language learning.
apple needs to get back on track with quicktime as rich media platform.
* voice: speech synthesis & speech recognition should be a clear differentiator from the other pda’s (msmobile, palm treos, moto ‘Q’ and BB ‘curves’): it should so something they cant (obviously any requirement that pushes the cpu beyond its current ~500Mhz level becomes a battery issue).
(however: at a minimum, voice capability is a direct value-add to the whole in-car issue issue, so that alone should be considered).
* interactivity: here is a good example of how apple is now paying the price for the foolish decision to axe in half investment in R&D, when Jobs returned to apple …. the interactive version of quicktime (which added tracks for hypercard scripts, to oversimplify) would have served many different constituencies over the last decade:
first, apple would have had an web story to easily rival Flash (instead we are stuck with the most arcane, buggy, resource-pig imaginable);
second, apple would have had a plausible enterprise response to the corporate drones mired in Visual Basic (hyperscript as client technology could have been ported to the jvm - and it could have been interfaced with webobjects to do enterprisy things) …. instead we are stuck with, well, VB! ’nuff said.
third, it could have been seriously integrated with java so that it became the de facto media layer for smart devices (set-top boxes, maybe games consoles (openGL based), nexgen dvd players etc. As it was, there was a token effort to re-purpose some of the kaledia effort into a java layer for quicktime, but that was left to languish like most other original ideas at apple! … and there was no effort to do the converse: produce a portable quicktime engine for java (the limitations of JIT performance gradually declined, and the cost/power/performance of the silicon in embedded devices that would run bytecode have gradually increased to acceptable levels).
The net result is that apple is not shipping ANY solution for _useful_ content so 2nd rate shiite has filled the vaccuum for network-based media:
* shiite adverts use Flash as basically just a video codec … and for NO GOOD REASON when h.264 is by far a better technical & commercial solution for delivery video!
* script-kiddies use javascript in the most painful ways to deliver interactivity.
Yes, CSS, xml, and ajax in general (and RubyonRails a little bit in particular) might make web 2.0 almost tolerable … and apple’s canvas tag in html5 might be a somewhat saner object for scripting … etc etc …
But, at the end of the day the result is that: a) apple is playing catch-up with web technology for years ahead when it yet already possessed some desktop technology that could very gracefully evolved as a networked media solution; and b) the inferior, ill-conceived, tangled mess we are stuck with instead hobbles everyone’s ability to get on with the job and deliver USEFUL interactive media.
(This screed also ignores the fact apple has totally neglected the dbms aspect of interactive media … Job’s did manage to sustain the search technology he inherited at apple, based on the LSA (latent semantic analysis that underlines the v-twin engine) - which slowly evolved into spotlight …. however, he did nothing with filemaker or an opensource alternative like mysql (let alone POSTGRESS!) to start dealing with the semantic web, especially the mpeg7 & mpeg21 aspects that should have become part of quicktime … for the present purpose, it is enough to restrict the scope of Job’s failure to the narrowest issues of interactivity for quicktime, such as the lack of any Scene Description Languages, all these obviously have a direct bearing on larger search & query questions).
So, What Is To Be Done with interactive media on the next 2G iphone & the (osx-based?) 6G ipod?
* Flash: no. It brings nothing to the table - and as a video codec it distracts from the benefits of a standards-based approach (h.264).
* Java: maybe ….
…. if apple can get a serious commitment from SUN (or perhaps the other way around! … maybe if Apple can actually make a serious commitment to SUN: just look at how lame & hald-hearted apple’s support of java has been … it doesnt even have java3D, so the opensource community had to build up an OGL work-around!)
note: SUN has finally created a binary standard for javamobile, so the futility of developing java for pda’s should bow transform to make it a plausible candidate vs web-based approaches (ajax).
**** The simple reality is that apple’s gutting of R&D has left quicktime far far behind as an interactive delivery platorm for the desktop, and a no-show for the network (mobile or otherwise).
Microsoft (silverfish) & Adobe (apollo) have RIA (rich internet architecture) platforms that can scale from the desktop across the network & on mobiles (maybe even consoles * set-top-box boxes) ….
BUT APPLE HAS LEFT ITSLEF WITH NO INTERACTIVE MEDIA PLATFORM!
except AJAX.
And is that really enough going to be enough for interactive media?
Note: It is not as though apple doesnt have experience in having a tool (webobjects) pump out multiple front ends (html, java, mac) … it is not as though it has no choice but to either offer no enrichment to quicktime or else surrender control of the platform to proprietary platforms from adobe/microsoft that represent THE ANTI-THESIS OF AN OPEN WEB!
Apple does have enough intellectual property remaining to enhance quicktime into a network/mobile/set-top -aka-appletv platform for interactivity - this despite the intellectual pogroms led by Steve Jobs a decade ago that practically denuded apple’s labs.
The business rational for putting quicktime into high gear on the nexgen iphones & ipods is simple: it will expose osx to a huge audience in asia (and elsewhere) that would otherwise no nothings about apple gear:
(1) indirect effect: the halo effect for macs would be substantial in asia if tens of millions of customers are going into applestores for the first time!
(2) direct effect: serious interactive technology for osx on an apple pda will make cbt (and especially language learning) into a killer app … inasmuch as any new CONTENT feature for a pda could be ‘must-have’ –
NOTE: in other words, apple should obviously try to have one killer app in each of the three pda categories: for communications, it is live video and visual voicemail is a must-have for the phone function; as for content, it is language learning (cbt) that is a must-have for the ipod function (not streaming youtube/tv, which is nice but not killer); as for the internet, it is navigation via gps-based maps - especially with live parking spots & traffic routes - that is a must-have for the communicator function … not an ajax browser! …
… Given the cramped (but nonetheless amazing) viewing area for web pages, it is reasonable to assume that most general-purpose web content will have to be endured as opposed to being a stress-free experience; that is ajax widgets will be the only aspect of the web experience that will be positive - because form will fit function …
… Ajax is indeed well-suited to these special purpose data views; but it does not have a strong first-order notion of feedback (i do mean something more than an ajax primitive like ‘REST’) and even if it did have such a notion, the bandwidth would be insufficient for realtime interaction …. in other words, game design on ajax would suffer from the same constraints as language learning (ie analysis of the content & interaction should properly be performed by the local cpu … doing high-quality speech generation or recognition over the network would simply cost a fortune even with 3DG bandwidth!)
It would not be unreasonable to assume that here would be 5M/Y units of (mostly) asian users who buy an iphone just because it has language ability.
NOTE: For asian languages, apple might have to be more flexible about input methods — a stylus is almost unavoidable for asian languages. Since Leopard has not demonstrated any amazing new predictive input methods for asian languages, we can safely assume that the iphone doesnt have any either.
Stylus input will obviously be especially important to language learners who will need alot of feedback on character drawing (and therefore an especially smart recognizer that can discriminate against USER mistakes as much as it can recognize the internal MACHINE mistakes (these are two different learning models!) - and the same issue about learning models will arise in the speech recognition engine for non-native speakers as well.
Also: The video ichat aspect also has an implication for language learners: having access to a native speaker as a language practice partner is an invaluable advantage no matter how excellent the courseware might be. One big splash form cbt that will drive lots of sales of iphones (especially in asia) is apple-organized language partners via voip! (that is going to probably mean wifi not 3G unless the carriers can understand their own enlightened self-interest!). If apple can insert itself - as broker or partner of an educational service - directly into this value-chain (ie not leaving up to a _chance_ search on facebook or whatever) by using some cool OSX, agent-based discovery services (like zero-conf does for hardware), then millions of students in asia will flock to the iphone …. asian parents arent to keen to pay for the entertainment aspect of gizmos, but they will be emphatically enthusiastic to pay for a device that has tangible educational value! The ‘language buddy’ feature in _video_ iChat (yes, fix the damn camera!) will be an instantly clear selling point for (middle class) parents in asia. Apple would be a FOOL to ignore one of the most effective aspects of its business model: customers as evangelists … ie a business model that depends on customers that BUY rather than a manufacturer that SELLS. Education-mad asian parents are a huge market just waiting to be acknowledged by Apple.
NOTE: Of course in order for quicktime to be a ’smart’ as well as interactive media platform it will have to understand the cbt standards such as;
* LOM (the learning object metadata) - http://ltsc.ieee.org/wg12/index.html
* SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Mode) http://www.adlnet.org/index.cfm
* or even simpler stuff like ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) - which could be vital for acceptance in the enterprise context (troubleshooting/helpdesk)
Remember that quicktime does have a basic html parser built-in (though god knows why apple cant follow RealNetworks’ lead, and allow for web content to be viewed inside the media player! instead of forcing us to pop out of context and launch safari) …. so by extention, if Quicktime can render web content (or use a web service), then there is no good reason quicktime cant be enhanced to process other specialized types of interactively oriented content … such as those that are germane to the cbt domain (cf above).
Sorry this rambled a bit
No sleep: brain not very linear
seriously … I really do believe that the delivery of cultural content language like language learning and cbt in general (along with landmark exploration for tourists) is an obvious & huge opportunity ignored by apple. Google has a translation platform, so it is an obvious partner for apple in language based services for the next 3G phone / wifi ipod.
If quicktime is enhanced to be a semantically aware platform for rich & intelligent content - with integrated speech/stylus recognition - then the language learning feature will be worth $1B/Y in iphone revenue — that is hardly something can just ignore (as much as apple has made an art of ignoring what its customers need!)
A task list would be real nice. Even nicer if it could sync to outlook etc. Also would like to be able to have voice notes. Every phone\pda I’ve ever had has it.. I use that a LOT. every other wish has already been mentioned
I vote for BCC in mail app too, I can’t believe only one other person thought that was an omission. It isn’t like that is even the tiniest bit difficult. It is just another simple field.
Would like to be able to save any picture in a browser to photos for use of wallpaper as well as save in email, all the above sound good, lets hope they fix stuff soon..
Support 802.1x, common in universities.
I want to save email attachments like photos or vids, .avi, .mov, etc. and access them after the mail is deleted.
Work uses MS Exchange (yech, I know). I’d like to forward my appts with a rule and have the iPhone automatically put them in my calendar like my Outlook client does. Outlook doesn’t even understand the iCalendar format on attachments (.ics files).
The WiFi at work uses PEAP for access control. OS X supports this, iPhone does not.
Scientific calculator option
default values for commonly entered parameters (e.g. alert times on appointments, etc.)
What about volume equalizer for phone calls? One of my major gripes about the technology of the cingular network is that the volume of the call is never consistent. Why can’t the phone compensate for it? It has a great speakerphone, make it work!
How do I unequivocally turn the alarm off? It isn’t clear when it is just snoozed and when it is completely turned off. The alarm rings, I press some button, it stops ringing. I go into “Clock > Alarms” and it says the alarm is turned off. Yets some snooze minutes later, it goes off again. How annoying!
I keep looking for a landscape view in Mail…
Real apps like Word, Excel and Powerpoint to be able to edit info without using Web 2.0. When I am overseas or in the mountains or away from WiFi or the Edge Network, I need to be able still to write, edit and design by documents. TO need to depend on a internet connection to do word processing and edit excel documents is ridiculous!
syang
“Real apps like Word, Excel and Powerpoint ” but they would give money to microsoft and it would power “THE MAN”!
But seriously… in a $600 phone, it should ATLEAST have an AIM feature.
I LOVE my iPhone, but I have to say the whole management of outgoing mail on the device is not really friendly to a truly mobile user.
Most of the time my WiFi is switched off just so I can consistently send mail without having to fight the whole smtp/port/spamblocking battle.
Lots of different potential fixes and of course many possible settings, but the simplest solution would be to allow multiple outgoing mail servers just like OSX mail. If one does not succeed, choose another one.
Please fix this soon.
HOW TO ADD WORDS TO IPHONE DICTIONARY.
Please help spread the word. Many people are not aware of this. It is not obvious. You have to read the user guide p 18.
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iPhone_User_Guide.pdf
(Caps added for emphasis)
Suggested corrections appear just above or below the word you’re typing. To use the suggested correction, type a space, punctuation mark, or return character.
To REJECT THE CORRECTION, finish typing the word as you want it, then TAP THE WORD before continuing to type anything else. (The second time you type the same word and reject the correction this way, iPhone ADDS THE WORD TO ITS DICTIONARY.
One more things.. Since AT&T is incapable of providing an accurate time source, the iPhone should have the ability to adjust the ‘seconds’ under the manual time settings-option. An accurate clock is important for obvious reasons; The AT&T source in Orange County, California is off by approximately 1 ½ min (test your local time accuracy through National Institute of Standards @ 303-499-7111 or http://tf.nist.gov/). I have also compared AT&T time-source issue on other mobile devices, so it’s not the iPhone at fault.
Good list. BUT…
I don’t think any of these features are revolutionary. These are mostly all standard on my current cell phone, just not in a fancy interface such as Apple’s. These things should have been there from the start. Apple likes to omit normal features because they like to keep things simple so that it can be used by the widest audience without overpowering them or confusing them. Most times this dissatisfies many people. They then later add these features if there is enough demand/user feedback requests. Although they could have just been busy and haven’t been able to add them bug-free yet. The notes suggestions are already going to be implemented when Leopard is released.
Reagrding software GPS, the cell network can return a very accurate location (better than just the logged tower location) because the cell network knows signal strength on multiple towers and knows which antenna plane is getting the strongest signal. The cell system uses this info to generate a very accurate location for 911 calls and actually does a crossfix to generate the location. This would be an awesome capability until the next generation iPhone comes along.
Add the ability to make calls via WIFI as was recently announced by T-Mobile.
A “Finder” would be nice. Where you can see all the files on your iPhone, Bluetooth them to other phones or Bluetooth capable devises, delete any of them, upload them to sites such as Flickr or even DropSend and make music or video files into custom ringtones.
I would also like to be able to change what is on the home screen, add web apps to it and get rid of apps I’ll never use, and if I did need to look at an app not on my homescreen I could find in the Finder.
I would like to be able to download stuff, Music from iTunes, little games that sort of stuff.
And finally: I would like Photobooth effects in the camera.
NEEDS GPRS OR someway to Use My Tom Tom..wasting a traffic subscription now 8 (
I think they should start selling ringtones for the iphone. Also GPS would be a nice addition.
Already could’ve use this:
- integration between Calendar app & Google Maps. There is a “location” field for a calendar event. If I enter an address in there, I’d like to be able to click that location in Calendar to take me to the location in Google Maps.
Let the display turn landscape in ALL APPLICATIONS like it does in Safari and give that BIG KEYBOARD.
Need is a specially for Mail, Notes and SMS.
Send SMS to multiple contacts at the same time.
Be able to save SMS message and send it to different people.
As someone who has spent considerable time in both the cell phone and computer businesses, I’ll tell you MY number one beef: NO VOICE DIALING. The interface is shore purty, but in many areas the iPhone cannot be used while driving due to hands-free laws. In the Washington DC metro area for example- the nation’s #1 cell phone market btw- using a keypad (soft or otherwise) while driving is good for a $100 ticket if you are caught. Even if I was willing to consider spending this much for a cell phone, this omission of a feature included in every el cheapo $20 phone is a deal breaker.
Repeating calendar events need to accomodate events that repeat on the same day each month (second Thursday) as well as the date (the 13th).
The Phraze-It Keyboard by Prevalent Devices for typing with your index fingers or thumbs.
I’m just waiting for Kotoeri-style Japanese text input.
Or, just map the JIS keyboard.
Just as in other incarnations of OSX, this should be accessible not only in the Japan-market iPhone, but selectable as an option anywhere in the world.
People here need to send foreign language email too!

You can download all your iPhone’s photos by going into your Application folder on a mac and selecting “Image Capture” This will download any pictures you have taken into a directory you have created on your Computer’s hard drive.
Thought you might like to know.
One feature I would like to see is the ability to add folders to the Pictures area on the phone. That way I don’t have to sync and I can just upload pictures into folders until I want to delete them.
I hate having all my work in one giant folder, and all the phones camera shots in another.
Does anyone know of a way to add a folder to the phone that is not sunk? Synced? Whatever!
Its doesn’t fullfill your wishes.. but we aren’t sitting on our fannies either.
Take a look at this.
Sort Contacts by Company or Title as well as by Name.
I want the option to have my voicemails be converted into text so I can read the voicemails instead of having to listen to them, in situations like when I’m in a meeting or at a loud place that I can’t hear so well. Software recognition software should be able to do this I would imagine.
While in the maps program, I want a way that I can put in my current location, then press a ‘map contacts’ button and have it map all the closest addresses of my contacts, so I can see if I’m close to where any of my contacts live/work…the list format would show the closest contact first and the distance to them, then ascending with respect to distance.
The already list is just good enough and covers almost everything that need to be available with the next gen iPhone. However, I would like to add one things and that is to have a higher mp camera (i.e 3 megapixels onwards 4mp 0r 5m) with video recording.
How about the ability to configure alarms/alerts
1. Which sound under which circumstance
2. Volume of specific alert
3. SET REPEATING. This is a big deal to me. If an alarm goes off (e.g. for an appointment), if I’m not there when it goes off, it does not repeat for me to know that it happend when I come back. Same thing for Emails, SMS, etc. It would be nice to set how long to keep repeating and the frequency.
4. Snoozing an appointment alert. I like to give myself a good amount of time (e.g. 1 hour) before an event to alert me in case I’m across town from the meeting place. But, if when that day comes, I’m close, it would be great to be able to set a snooze like PocketPC (e.g. 5 min, 10 min, etc. or 5 min before, etc). VERY helpful.
Dax
Display contacts in the contact list as they are setup in outlook. Some I have by company, company (name), name, name (company). Not just name. I don’t know all of my contacts by name (e.g. AC repair guy).
Dax
Here is my 2 cents.
Contact lookup in Phone mode (like it does in SMS mode)
MMS texting
SMS multiple people
Games
Ringtones
File Browser
Ability to download attachments from email (i.e Photos)
3nd party applications
The iPhone is a DVB-H mobile device for watching broadcast TV.
1 Text is data. I feel ripped off that I have to pay extra for text when I have unlimted data (AT&T issues). 2 Pressing space bar twice automaticly puts in a period like a BlackBerry. 3 Allow developers to write apps for phone. 4 Pages and numbers for iPhone so we can read documents. How about moving the iPhone to a fast data network like Sprint or Verizon. Edge at best hits 300k, while Sprint’s EVDO hits 3.1MB.
This may have already been added to the list (sorry I need to run to class and I didn’t have time to read all the comments), but this has annoyed me since the day I activated my iPhone. I HATE that you cannot manually manage your music like you can on iPod. I have a 8GB iPhone but over 20GB of music. It annoys me that the only way to but music on the iPhone is to load all (which will have iTunes create a random playlist of songs for anything over 8GB) or through playlists. Would it be that hard to be able to let people drag and drop music. Maybe I am part of a slim minority who likes to do this? Yes, I know I can just create an iPhone playlist and have that sync to my iPhone (which I have done) but then I have an iPhone playlist just sitting in iTunes which annoys me. I guess I am just quirky like that.
Often I have friends call me who are looking for a cell number of another friend. I think the contacts page should have a button to sms the concact information directly. For non-iphone users, they see it as a text. For iphone users, they get a sms with a button to import the vcard, or other format into their contacts with all the info attached.
This would be most often used when someone wants your own contact info. Now, you can send them the whole deal, email, address, birthday, url It really needs to be on the list of things to have on the phone.
i want to shake the iphone to turn off the alarm. and if the phone happens to be in my pocket…well, that should be funny
I wish there was a preference for how long the unlock slider is. When using the iPhone with one hand, sometimes it’s a tad hard to slide the slider all the way across. I find myself trying a coupel times when the phone is ringing…..I wish I could make it shorter. People have different sized hands….why not accomodate that on the unlock slider?
Integrate the damn phone with your own apps on the Mac!! Address book bluetooth SMS and Dialing? WTF
I don’t know if anyone said this yet or not, but the ability to place a phone number into a text message from the contact list. Or a simple copy and paste.
I’m thinking of these as for my iPod touch, or based or the reports of the iPhone’s abilities (I’m from Australia) but:
1. Songs with no cover art should show the desktop image in the now playing screen rather than the ugly placeholder.
2. Searching (of music, movies, and podcasts — including meta-information such as comments, lyrics, episode notes, and subtitles — using the spotlight framework. (Search like in the 5.5G would be pretty pointless, as you can get to the song quicker via the song list)).
3. Wireless/EDGE updating of podcasts. Offline storage of webpages & Google Gears (or similar) support.
4. Exposure compensation for the Camera, and image adjustment (like a more iPhone version of http://images.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/images/iphoto_editing20070807.png after taking a photo, and when viewing a photo.
5. Custom (visual) Equaliser. Because the presets suck.
6. Support for interactive Quicktime movies. They may not be able to do flash (that would be up to adobe) But interactive quicktime would allow people to make flash-like apps for the iPhone, and thus would increase the usage of Quicktime in Web sites, and thus would increase Quicktime use for consumers, and thus Apple profits)
7. Media Browser. Currently, there is no way to upload files to the web via Safari. Clearly, they don’t want to expose the filesystem to the user (and there’s really no reason to), but they could implement a media browser like the ones in iLife & iWork (and in leopard’s finder) (eg: iMovie HD’s one: http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/2208/picture1ql6.png ) with the items: Photos, Music (if agreements allow this), Movies (again…), Contacts (as VCards) Notes…
8. Bluetooh - Using the aforementioned media browser, allow sending things via bluetooth to other devices (or ’squirting’ via WI-FI)
9. Autoswitching Desktops - Like on the Mac, I’d love it if we were able select a photo album/event/folder, and have it switch betwwen them every time you see the lock screen/every 10 minutes/every hour/ every day/every time you sync…
10. Home Screen Customisation - I don’t care about stocks. Google Maps has absolutely no information in my town. I don’t need them to be one tap away. BUT - I listen to a large number of Podcasts (and movies too, but the iPod touch has them one touch away already) And, I’d love those to be one tap away
11. There’s a keyboard - so use it! let me change the name of the on the go playlists to something descriptive please
12. Smart Playlist creation – This should probably be done as part of the search feature mentioned above. Allow the creation of smart playlists based upon meta-info on the iPhone. It already computes the existing Smart Playlists, so I can’t se why it couldn’t make a new one
13. Proxies. — My school (and all other ones in my state) use a proxy server to access the (filtered) internet. without it configured, I can’t use the WIFI at school
Setting a PAC file URL would be great
14. Scientific Calculator. Currently, I use this http://scicalc.belfry.com/ (in bookmarklet form) to get a scientific calculator without the web, but to do it natively would be easier (and therefore easier)
15. (this list is getting long than I expected) Multiple selections. It would be useful for almost all lists - two finger drags shoudl select multiple list items & allow them to be manipulated together (eg, deleted)
16. To do list, that syncs with Mail. It seems so obvious… maybe they’ll add it when leopard is released.
17. RSS reader, that also syncs with Mail.
18. Mail on the iPod touch.
Note: I don’t know why everyone’s complaining about having to take out the iPod/iPhone to change songs - you can just double tap the home button and touch the controls. It’s pretty hard to miss, and there’s nothing else you can do with a tap on the lock screen anyway… unlocking requires a slide…
Maybe it has been stated but every other camera phone I have owned, I could send a photo thru text message. Seems like a given but you can’t do it as far as I can see. If I am wrong somebody please set me straight. I convinced a buddy of mine to ditch his Sony Ericsson for an iPhone and he was asking me about this. Mail is great but it I should be able to send photos to others who aren’t onboard yet.
i want those things
The camera should have flash, zoom and other advanced camera features. Otherwise, we have to hang on to our old cameras. What’s the point.
When passcode lock is activated, it would not be possible for someone to look up an ICE contact (In Case of Emergency). This could be added to the keypad that pops up when the phone is woken up. This should probably be a note, which allows the owner to type in any information relevant for his would-be rescuer , or could include contact information for an individual that finds a lost iPhone (i.e., in case you find this phone, please contact…”.
Because the iPhone has so much personal information, it would be wise for all to passcode lock their phones and Apple should encourage this!
I vote for 335!!
I love to see a “print” button added!
I have a Wi Fi HP color photo printer at home. It be great after taking some photos, receiving some or reading a web story I like to print and share, to link to
my Wi Fi printer and do just that - print!
Print on photo paper or just paper.
This is for the iPod touch more than the iPhone, but the ability to host the map data files locally so that they are available when you can’t get a cell or wifi signal (arguably when you need maps MOST). Not the sat photos, obviously, but the drawn maps can’t be that big and you could just host specific regions (UK/Europe, North America, Asia, etc.)
iCal week view in widescreen mode.
iphone needs to have a better way to look up contacts. the same way you are able to start typing person name when sending them email. it starts to find the contacts based on the your typing. also should be able to look up a contact based on there company name. say if you for get there name but remember there company name.
It would be a nice feat if it finally got released in the Netherlands without simlock and for a reasonable price too!! dammit, its so frustrating to see every country in europe get it and still not even a rumor that it’s coming to us…
I bought an iPhone during christmas and love the thing however I do get pissed that I bought a $400 phone and there are things that suck about it, even though I love it.
#1-sms pics! Why in the world can’t I send or receive pics via sms messages? This shouldnt even be an option!
#2-video recorder would be nice.
#3-sound! I want to be able to hear my speaker better and have the ringtones louder.
#4-ringtone rings! I should be able to take any song that I own, weather bought off itunes or via cd, pick a 30 second section and set it as my ringtone.
if anyone knows any ways to do any of those things please email me and let me know ownthemountain@comcast.net
thanks!
The iPhone already allows you to pause or stop a song while in any application or even when the phone is locked. Just need to set the preference where a double-press of hardware button brings up the mini ipod controller overlay.
What I’d like is to have a larger forward/reverse tool in iPod, so I can more precisely drag the audio forward or backwards.
im not too sure if someone mentioned this already, but i would love to see the iphone come to its full potentials. Having an application to write paper or essays would be one of those potentials!!..something like microsoft word, i don’t know if apple deals with Microsoft but it would really help if steve build an application just like MW or just make a deal with microsoft and add it to the iPhone!!! im sure it wouldnt hurt your pocket, much steve. and also, a Documents Folder would be most helful too. if you gonna write papers, u have to have somewhere to save them(this would also mean that Copy & Paste is included on the phone)!!!!!!!!!!
Locally stored Google Maps would be awesome. (make it able to be more like a GPS unit). I don’t see why i need to constantly wait on EDGE for maps to download of roads that won’t change very often.
For reference, North America takes up 1GB on my Tom Tom.
I use Google Maps way more than the iPod part, so if its a big chunk, thats fine with me.
I’d like to see the accelerometer used to charge the battery. There are probably a 100 reasons why it isn’t going to work but the principle of kinetic energy generation has been around in wrist watches for decades - it would only need very small amounts generated from our movement to make an overall difference to the life of the battery.
Global data base search. Maybe this is already on the list, but I didn’t see it. The Palm OS had a very nice global search function that would search contacts, calendar, notes, etc. I used this feature daily on my old PDA. The new iPhone OS needs this same capability.
Get rid of “Slide to Unlock” - aside from looking neat, it serves no purpose whatsoever if you think about it. Just an annoying extra step that needs to be taken 50 times a day.
It’s purpose was to prevent unintended actions on the touchscreen. However there is no need for this.
For one, the touchscreen only responds to fingers. Things in your pocket cannot trigger them.
Secondly, the only time screen-lock is engaged is when the iPhone goes to sleep (either manually or with auto-lock). The touchscreen is totally deactivated at that point. The only way to wake up is to press a hard button (which are far too rigid to be accidentally pressed while inside one’s pocket).
At the very least, the option to disable should exist in the Settings menu.
Provide some options for screen dim, sleep, and auto-lock. Right now there is one option. Auto-lock (which does everything). After 1-minute, for example, it doesn’t just auto-lock. It also goes to sleep if nothing is happening. Or if music is playing, it dims the screen instead. There needs to be a way to control this behavior.
More importantly, there needs to be different behavior based on whether it’s plugged in or not. I don’t need nor want it to go to sleep when it’s receiving power. But it does, and because of it, using Google maps w/ GPS in the car is utterly useless unless I want to leave auto-lock/auto-sleep turned off (which I don’t). When unplugged, I want it to go to sleep after a set time in order to save battery life. But when it’s plugged in and charging, I don’t want it to sleep, dim, or screen-lock. Ever.
Aside from going to sleep or dimming, screen-lock is especially stupid in this case. Nobody charges their iPhone while it’s inside their pocket.
Last year I made a video about how apple could improve itunes and also iphone by making it easyer to make playlists… se it here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=YmTIV_VYgkk
Now that iPhone 2.0, and the App store are around, I want to be able to remove the default apps from my iPhone. Clock is mentioned above, but also Weather, and Stocks I rarely ever use, and now with new/better weather and stocks apps available, I could use the extra space on the dash.
1. A “back button” to take me to the previous app screen withou having to return to home and blah, blah, blah.
2. Multiple selection of contacts.
1) I would like to be able to plug my iPhone into my laptop and use it as a modem
2) I would like to have the ability to use the iPhone as a hard disk and drag and drop files onto it
3) Ability to transfer files using Bluetooth
4) Ability to listen to music through my Bluetooth headset.
5) Video Recording
6) MMS
7) Push to Talk
This page needs to be updated now that the 2.0 software was released. I see several of the above suggestions that were addressed by that update.
But now that I am loading lots of apps, I’d like to create buttons to take me to labeled screens, like ‘games’ to take me to a screen with all my games, etc…
The iPhone already identifies phone numbers on web pages in Safari, and turns them into links that will automatically dial that number when the number is selected from the web page as a hyperlink. This is a very useful feature.
In a similar way, it would be very helpful to be able to do pattern matching while browsing web pages in Safari with user-defined regular expressions, and automatically turn patterns matched into hyperlinks that go to a regular-expression defined web address when selected. An example where this idea could be applied is that anything that looks like a latitude/longitude coordinate could be turned into a hyperlink that would invoke maps.google.com and pass the coordinate go Google Maps, to bring up that specific spot in Google Maps. This would be a very helpful geocaching feature, and it would also be useful in other places where latitude/longitude coordinates are used.
I’d like to see a change such that when you’re listening to streaming audio, the headphone clicker pauses/plays that audio rather than trying to start audio from iPod. It’s a pain having to unlock my phone and pause the stream in Safari and it seems like the obvious Right Thing to Do.
How about VoIP, like Skype or Fring
- custom message tones
- full blown skype app (VoiP & chat function)
- front row remote (come on Apple, that should be easy!)
- note pad sync
- disc function
- sms timestamps
- chronological “new app” category in the app shop
- RSS integrated in mail ( as in Leopard )
- flash support
- remote wipe via mobileme
- copy & paste
- photo booth effects & video on the built in camera
- ability to save media files (like youTube)
The ability to queue sending SMS messages while the iPhone has no signal then have them send when you get a signal. My Treo did this and it was helpful for times when I was working in a data center or on the subway. It’s highly annoying I that I have to hit send 5 or 6 times when I’m in dead zone.
Hope Apple reads this….I want to be able to rate my songs in iTunes while listening to them on iPhone in a playlist (which is most common). All they have to do is add the rating bar under new Genius/fast forward bar during song play. I shouldn’t have to touch the album to see ratings. I use this to rate all my music and this is a big hassle.
With Outlook OWA e-mail sync, I’d like to see an updated count of new messages in either all of my folders or at least some folders that I select because in Outlook, I filter messages from some senders to a particular folder and would like to see if there’s any new messages in that folder without having to list that folder.
I badly need the phone to provide a sound reminder if I have missed a call (like the Motorola phones do).
PLEASE either sell or give us SMS ringtones .The default ones are WAY too short and i miss important messages. I may have to go back to my crappy old phone that allowed any .mp3 to be used as an sms alert
You can make custom ringtones with Garage band. Double tap main button open ipod controls on any apps so you don’t need other thing. Before making this list check these things!
The ability to accept and send events/invitations on the iPhone would be great.
I would like to be notified of new emails with subject and maybe two lines of the body (much like the SMS notifier functions today).
When I receive new email I have to choose the email app, then pick account and then go to the inbox. Cumbersome!
Would be much better if the email was displayed at the front in the same manner as SMS, and with two buttons to either read it or delete it directly.

Apple needs to address the issue of not being able to receive or send multimedia messages (pictures or videos) without having to go to viewmymessage.com which never seems to work unless connected to WiFi..
Any normal cheap cell phone can text pics and vids, but apple couldnt figure out a way for the iPhone to do that….
the ability to record phone conversations, I’ve had plenty that would go a long way in a court trial that could have helped the safety and well being of the victim, her family, and friends from a deranged ex.
some people have said that apple wouldn’t do it cause that would lead to the humiliation of a few, well;
1)apple would not be responsable for recording and distributing the call
2) i hardly think the dignity of a few is worth more than the life of one.
on a less serious request, google maps, needs to recognize the last view (street, satillite, hybrid) and keep that view for the next time. I will ALWAYS use the hybrid, so it just slows me down to change it (it also uses more bandwidth).
google maps also needs to rotate the maps to put your heading at the top, ex: if i am heading south, then south needs to be at the top of the display( this should at least be an optional.
the email app needs a “home” button, it’s annoying having to cycle back to get to another email account
Here’s The Lists I have Built up so far
1. Home Page for Safari. (small simple feature, Not a big upgrade request but very usefull, is this too much to ask?)
2. Ability to switch to landscape while keyboard is open. (IM+ app from “Shape Services” supports this, why can’t Apple?)
3.Landscape support for SMS, Mail, Notes, Maps, ect, (Widescreen keyboard=bigger, easy,&better. No brainer, and also not too much to ask of native apps from Apple itself)
4.Stacks and Folders “like OSX Leopard”. The ability to organize applications into Stacks and/or folders on the iPhone would be very usefull and efficient. This would also allow the user to organize their applications into categories. (This could allow users to have more than 9 pages of apps on their home screen)
5. Basic camera funtions in Camera App, Such as Zooming in and out (like my old Samsug phone) and is it too much to ask for a few basic light filters or deifferent lenses? and if the iPhone is so much more advanced than other phones it should be able to do even more things than other camera phones can’t, Like maybe adjusting, brightness, contrast, hue, exposure, sharpness, ect. (Great for mobile uploads to services like facebook, myspace, photoshop, twitter, ect)
6. Running Apps parallel or in the background. This ability is a must when multitasking on an iPhone, Please Apple give us more freedom to run multiple applications at once. This feature would be best with on-screen notifications from the backround apps to get attention similar to that of text messages or missed calls.
7. Video Recording. when using the “camera” app you can see how good the FPS (frames per second) rate is on the iPhone, is there no way to capture those frames and complile them into a video? Apparently the app called “Cycorder” on Cydia has already managed to do this, even on a First generation iPhone!
8. Tethering, obviously there are legal issues involving each country’s wireless service provider, But the technology does exist and it does work!
ie. NetShare,iPhoneModem, and of course PDAnet which has been widely used for tethering in the wireless industry for years.
9. New Apple In-Ear Headphone Compatibility. The newly designed in-ear headphones from Apple are great, but what about us iPhone users who want more noise reduction and better sound quality, People that use the iPod function most on their iPhones would especially appriciate the abiltity to adjust volume, skip next AND previous tracks, ect.
10. Use iPhone a USB Flash Drive. There are options for sharing and transferring files wirelessly to the iPhone, But there has yet to be a solution for using a direct USB connection to share files with the iPhone. What if the user doesn’t have a Wi-Fi router or a Wi-Fi network to share over? And all you want to do is carry one file to the office that is just a little to big for e-mail? This function could prove to be very useful to all of us in the long run.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST…
11. Custom Themes and Backgrounds! Okay so you can change the wallpaper on your iPhone to a cute photo of your little nephew “Whoopee!” What a huge technological breakthough for mobile phones! (my old samsung was able to do this). The iPhone should be a little more personalized or at least have the capability of being customized by the user to some degree. The overall appearance and theme of the user interface should be more flexible and adjustable on the iPhone OS. Not just custom wallpapers, but also custom backgrounds for your home screen, different colors and themes for menus, buttons ,task bar, ect. Apple please allow iPhone developers to create apps that can style and change the theme of the User Interface.
I have many more ideas on my list, some are the same or very similar to the ones already posted above, but I just picked the ones I thought were most important, or most useful.
There are many more very useful features I didn’t post simply because i’ve seen them posted many times already such the Cut&Paste feature.
Albums Cover flow - Sort by Album…..Thats what I want
Downloading.
My co-worker has an LG Shine and he can download files from the internet right to his phone through his mobile browser. I know the LG Shine has a SD memory card slot but the the iPhone can currently hold up to 16GB which is plenty of space! When you try to download something on the iPhone it gives you a message saying “Safari cannot download this file” Safari should be able to download files other than PDF’s and JPG’s, ect. I know applications in the App Store that are larger than 10MB need a Wi-Fi connection to download, so couldnt Apple do the same thing with any other file on the internet? This feature would go along very nicely with the ability to use your phone as a USB flash drive!
Id like to be able to go from a song to see other songs from this artist. Like a link under the song that lets you go to other songs by this artist. Thanks
1) The ability to receive multimedia text messages on the iPhone without having to go to “viewmymessage.com”
2) The ability to send multimedia text messages and pictures
2) Cut and paste, in emails and while surfing
3) Text forwarding and resending of texts
missing features when viewing a PDF file:
- ability to store PDF for offline viewing. how can i get it when network is not available, or if airplane mode is active?
- ability to “jump to page…” or a table of contents. it pisses me off to have to flick through 50+ pages.
- uh, how about adding a “find…” feature at least?
i know apple loves being minimalistic, but come on, don’t be this ridiculous! i had a palm treo before the iP3G, and i miss it quite often.
I want my application icons to auto arrange by number of times used. At least add a feature in iTunes to arrange applications on the iPhone.
User-selectable alert sound for calender events.
The calender currently emits only a soft blip when the event alerts. i’d be so happy if I could change it to a louder sound.
Better still: Alert sounds selectable per agenda. (per event, anyone?0
One thing I’d really like to see, is a slight change of the iPod touch / iPhone - Programs interface pane in iTunes. It would be really nice if you could visually sort all the installed app-icons here. Maybe some sort of virtual pasteboard around an area that represents the devices screen. You can browse through the different pages using the small dots as you would on the device itself.
The abillity to broadcast GPS-positions in between iphones.
It could open up for new navigation apps, with the abillity to track members within a defined group using the same application in realtime (more or less).
A radar-like application that pings my family and friends locations with direction and distance would be a great feature.
Bluetooth file transfers
Auto-answer to bluetooth headset
voice dial from bluetooth headset
dialed calls list
received calls list
missed calls list
this is a “next gen phone without average last gen phone features
Ability to add other recipients when making an appointment.
It would be great to turn on/off the rotation of safari. Try to read a website on your iphone while you’re lying on bed. Simple but effective.

2) In Recent calls, if several calls are grouped into one, the ability to see the indiviual times of each call
3) Calendar colors on iPhone match Mac colors
4) Social networking integration
5) Power button can be used to snap a pic. It’s hard to find the touch button when holding the phone in a wierd position
6) Access safari bookmarks by holding down the safari icon
Call Forwarding needs location awareness. Automatically toggles when you leave home and come back. Not everyone has great cell reception inside their house.
Ability to compose Notes in Mail just like in Apple Mail on the Mac. In this regard, an option to save a Note as a Mail note from within iPhone’s Notes App would be nice, too.
This is a long list, so if I am repeating a request, I apologize… I genuinely thought my ideas were original…
1. Location aware switch for GPS and WiFi to be on or off. In other words, when I am home, I want my WiFi to be ON and GPS to be OFF. When I am at work, I want neither to be ON. When I am moving, I want the GPS to be ON… see what I mean? It would save battery life if we could set these rules for when the system has WiFi and GPS enabled and create favorite zones also. Even have it turn on WiFi once every 5 minutes to check to see if a remembered WiFi location is present and remain on if it finds one would be a nice option.
2. Allow sort options for Podcasts. I hate to listen to them out of order. If iTunes had a way to pre-sequence them, that would even be nice. I’ve tried sorting various ways in iTunes, but my Coast-to-Coast AM podcasts still play out of order.
When listening to audio books, triple click on the headpiece rewind the audio by 1 minute, rather than just go to the beginning of the chapter.
The current behavior is fine for listen to short songs, but totally useless for audio books.
Sorry big long list. Need to vent.

21) when an underlined/blue phone no. is available to press on, when you tap it, give the ability to save it and not just call/cancel

34) Voice Recording
35) Edit contact groups on the iPhone
36) able to check account Balance

41) proper management of applications/songs you have bought in the app store or on itunes store. if you go to buy something, state immediately if you have already purchased it or not!
42) Microsoft office for iPhone
43) save email attachments in a genuine apple application or folder. store them where files are stored in “Disk Mode” have a specific application or dedicated folder/drive
44) smiley face recognition in SMS.
45) cover flow for contacts would be v. cool!
I’d like to be able to accept a call not by using the slider, but with a motion of the iphone itself… Think of the Flick-Motion out of StarTreck when they “pick up” their communicator.
WOW!! ALMOST EVERYTHING IN THIS LIST IS NOW POSSIBLE ON THE IPHONE. THATS SO CRAZY!
Meeting Mode:
Set your iphone on silent for a specific amount of time and the iphone automatically returns to ring mode when the time expires. This will work well for people who are constantly forgetting to manually switch their phones from silent to ring after they have finished a meeting or work. I am constantly missing calls on my iphone which is primarily a phone and that really really sucks. I hardly missed calls on my Motorola Slvr because I kept it on silent when it was on me, and when it wasn’t on me I plugged it into the wall to charge and it would automatically go into ring mode. Only occasionally when I forgot to plug it in after I got home would I miss a call. Some one please fix this issue it’s driving me nuts.
