colorware iphone

I just got my ColorWare painted iPhone back today. Review forthcoming, but I thought I would post some pics in the meantime. (Any dots or stuff you see are dust and greasy finger marks and such that I thought I cleaned, the paint job is pristine!)

Click the thumbnail gallery at the bottom to see 28 larger images (about 1700×1200). You can see I opted for the tag team of Envy (green) and Carbon (dark gray) in the “automotive” metallic paint, with flecks of awesomeness in it.

  4. very cool. How did you choose a color? I actually played with their color picker app for an hour, and came up with 5 schemes I couldn’t choose from (or afford).
    :)

  6. what do you do if you have the dead area show up on your iphone? do you end up with a different unit that’s factory? will apple still trade it? will colorware color it again? ;). just curious, and didn’t research any of it… cause i figured you knew =+).

  8. Well, if the iPhone should die, I am probably screwed. Apple claims the warranty is void on iPhones that have their serial number “altered” and the serial number here is painted over. Of course, you can still get the serial number via the software, and this is not some sort of “steal an iPhone and file off the serial number to resell it” scheme. While it would be nice if Apple honored the warranty if it dies, I am not optimistic, even if it is their fault. However, I have heard that Apple has taken back defective ColorWare painted iPods in the past..

If you buy a brand new iPhone from colorWare, they give you a full 1 year warranty, if you send yours in, like I did, they give you a 30 day warranty, just so you can verify they didn’t break it.

If you have faith in the product (meaning Apple’s) then there’s no reason not to get the paint job, it is very professionally done. I’d love to tour the factory one day and see how they do it.

If you don’t have an iPhone yet but want one, I would say buy from ColorWare, as you will also save the cost of shipping to them.

  10. A slightly different situation, but I had a Colorware iPod (one purchased from them), and had to return it twice for hard drive problems. Their customer service was very fast, probably faster than Apple’s would have been due to being a smaller outfit, and I had no problems sending it to them and getting it back quickly. Eventually it died again after the 1 year warranty ran out, but I’ve had that happen to every HD iPod I’ve ever owned, so I don’t blame it on them. I was concerned about warranty, too, which is why I bought the iPod from them directly so I wouldn’t have to try to get Apple to honor the warranty if it broke.

  16. I agree with eyecandy (sans the racist slur).

Beauty is of course subjective but as an artist and designer with many years of experience I have to say that is one of the *ugliest* paint jobs I have ever seen. Lime green anodized metal? With the nice chrome painted dull grey?

You just turned a chick magnet into a date avoidance device. The only thing worse would have been an X-Box logo on the back. :-)

I went to the site and played around with colours for hours and in the end none of them look as good as the original iPhone in my (informed) opinion.

  17. Dr. Macenstein on Sun, 12th Aug 2007 6:12 pm
  18. That’s OK, Jeremy, to each his own, and I think it looks super cool.

Plus I am married, so perhaps this green phone will help me stay faithful, repelling all the hot chicks who would have wanted me for my originally colored iPhone.

  20. Wow, that’s awesome. I was very tempted to send mine out to have it painted but with the casing that I currently have it in, the color really won’t be that visible.

  21. ceaster on Sun, 12th Aug 2007 6:14 pm
  22. My friend just got a macbook done up in ferrari red. She claims it looks beautiful, I don’t know because I have yet to see it. Why? Because when she got it back colorware had broken the touch pad. She took it into the local apple store and despite one genius telling her it wouldn’t void her warranty, it did. She sent it back to colorware to get it fixed about a week and a half ago. I don’t think she has heard anything from them and while colorware’s jobs sure look cool I don’t think I’ll be doing it anytime soon.

  23. Wes on Sun, 12th Aug 2007 6:25 pm
  24. @Jeremy

You honestly believe the iPhone is a chick magnet? Do you really call them chicks too? I’d be bitterly disappointed in humanity if you’ve dated a “chick” who was attracted to you because of your electronic prowess.

    @Dr. Macenstein

I like it! In my (uninformed) opinion there’s nothing wrong with displaying individual taste, the iPhone always was pretty but now yours is different to the rest of the iSheep. Good luck with the faithfulness!

  28. You people and your i toys. Steve Jobs is making a killing off of you. You should’ve bought a motorola q or some other REAL smartphone.

  29. Carlos on Sun, 12th Aug 2007 7:39 pm
  30. What happened to the Apple logo on the back - they dont replace the chrome logo??

With it missing it looks like you have a painted case over the back.

Paint looks nice - looks like they did a good job prepping and painting the iPhone.

  31. Rowlings on Sun, 12th Aug 2007 7:41 pm
  32. Very Cool.
So what you are telling me is not only do I have to save up $600 for my iPhone, I really need to save up $820?

    Damn.

  33. Greg Moran on Sun, 12th Aug 2007 7:45 pm
  34. “Real” smartphones aren’t any better than the iPhone. I own a Samsung Blackjack, and I’ve owned numerous Blackberries in the past, and I’d still rather have an iPhone. Just because someone doesn’t want to suffer through Windows Mobile’s ridiculous loading times and laggy interface doesn’t mean they’re buying the iPhone just to have another i gadget.

Dr. Macenstein, I really like it. What made you choose the lime green and graphite?

  35. Rich on Sun, 12th Aug 2007 7:51 pm
  36. This is awesome

  37. Carlos on Sun, 12th Aug 2007 7:52 pm
  38. nevermind - its an option to remove the chrome logo. IMO I would choose to leave it in.

Played around with the colors and I would have to go with all white back and frame - It would look awesome in person - sort of like a retro mac style now that they are abandoning white.

Note to haters: if you want to convince anyone of the iPhone’s inferiority by way of comparison, do not cite the Motorola Q, of all things. Anybody who has ever used one will think you’re a tool.

  54. do they paint your existing case?

i have scratches and a decent gouge on the one side of the chrome trim….would they replace it or “fix” it or leave it as is?

  55. Dr. Macenstein on Sun, 12th Aug 2007 10:26 pm
  56. xfsasx,

they paint the existing case. As far as I know they do not take the iPhone apart to paint it.

I only had this iPhone for about 2 weeks before sending it out, but I did have a few very faint scratches on the chrome, which are now gone. One of the reasons I painted the chrome, I figured the paint would be more durable.

  58. to jeremy,

If you are a designer as you say you are you’d recognize the fact that this color green along with the black are used in more and more “trendy”design (book, web, etc.). If anything this individuals color choices reflect the “web 2.0″ schemes most widely used on the intertubes today.

Just because professional printers print in CMYK format doesn’t mean cyan, magenta, yellow, and black are the best color choices to make.

    out.

  60. lol you could have sent me the iphone. I can do a way better job than those clowns at colorware. their retarded for painting a metal piece. I could have powdercoated you the green piece and it would last you years before scratching. Anyway 150 is way too much for a job like that. I can see sand marks all over the back.

  61. Geoff on Mon, 13th Aug 2007 1:26 am
  62. Looks like an awesome finish.
    Bummer about the Colorware logo.
    Unless it’s optional.

  64. Awesome, somehow that green colour made me feel like eating it, or was it that i had just eaten an apple (no, not Apple itsself). lol

  65. Carlos on Mon, 13th Aug 2007 3:47 am
  66. They must take it apart if they removed the chrome apple logo on the back, right?

From the pics it looks like the chrome apple insert in missing - why dont they just paint the chrome apple logo black and re-instal?

  75. TomK on Mon, 13th Aug 2007 3:56 pm
  76. Wow 150$’s to add another logo to your phone. It would be nice, except for that colorware logo, which screams “We don’t understand anything about why people like apple stuff in the first place. Let’s add a logo.”

  77. Matt on Mon, 13th Aug 2007 7:01 pm
  78. I just sent my wife’s iphone in for a paintjob. We added the option of painting the apple logo brown but after I saw yours I was wondering if they actually paint the chrome logo, or take it out and paint the background. Did you ask them to take it out? I plan on putting the invisible shield full protection on the phone which wouldn’t work well if they take the apple logo out and leave a gap between the case and the background. Anyway, I think yours looks great and obviously reflects your personal taste. My wife wanted one pink with coffee brown accents, which i’m sure is sacreligious to most, but hey, it’s her phone she can put polka dots on it for all I care!

  79. fyasko on Mon, 13th Aug 2007 7:20 pm
  80. It looks great, i’m going to send mine in. White to replace the silver on the back, red to replace the black on the back. A light orange frame to replace chrome, and red button on front. Colorware does an awesome job. And regarding to the “sand” comment, it’s a phone not a car. Stick your car in your pocket for a year and see how pristine it will look. And if you can do a better job, start up your own web business.

  81. rcolosim on Mon, 13th Aug 2007 9:38 pm
  82. I just got my iPhone back from Coloware today and it looks awesome (all white except for Apple logo) and the paint looks great! I am very happy with the final product for one small exception, my mic doesnt work anymore. I found this out when I received my first call and the person on the other end couldnt hear me at all (although they can hear when I blow into the mic holes). Now I must RMA the phone and I’m sure Colorware is going to want to keep it for another two weeks all because some idiot repositioned the microphone incorrectly.

  83. MARAUDERRT10 on Mon, 13th Aug 2007 11:11 pm
  84. fyasko your an idiot if you WANT to have sand marks on the back of your phone. First off, a paintjob that expensive SHOULD look like a car paint job, Second dumbass, car paintjobs last YEARS before you need to paint it, so why dont you research before you blatantly ramble on about it. I do quality paintjobs on my products and dont put crappy advertising on products just to get people to come to me, people come to be because they KNOW i do good work. Second off, Colorware is the biggest rip off, for 150$ i could paint half a car.

  85. jos on Tue, 14th Aug 2007 9:02 am

  94. i actually think its really cool and good way to make your iphone look new again once it starts to look warn out and everyone who owns the iphone has the same same color its nice to be able to have your iphone stand out from all the rest i personally don’t like just the boring silver and black i prefer phones with color, phones that are different from everyone else being able to have it customized like that allows you to add your own personal touch to it.

  96. Actually, they take the whole thing apart and color it, paint it with their special scratch-resistent resin, then bake in in ultraviolet light. The circuit thing is kept in a static-free chamber until the pieces are ready.

  100. When you got your iphone were you able to put your AT&T Sim card in right when you got it, or did you have to get the phone unlocked? I bought my customized iphone from Colorware and they didn’t say anything before I bought it about having to get it unlocked.

  101. Dr. Macenstein on Thu, 10th Apr 2008 11:39 am
  102. Kimberly,
I sent them mine, which was already activated on AT&T. But as far as I know they do not sell unlocked iPhones, nor would they need to be unlocked to use them with AT&T.

  104. i got mine 6 months ago, i was very happy, it looked amazing.

    two things:
the paint chipped off after two weeks {a little corner} while i had not even dropped it!

second, it does scratch, it ends up looking like car paint under a bright sun, or a white plastic iPod.

i was upset called them and they repainted mine, i ended up putting an invisibleshield on it

  106. Knowing that I have been looking at the Gen2 iTouch for the memory increase (need 32GB), my wife has been eyeing my first gen iTouch as a possible upgrade to her older nano.

I had been feeling bad about giving her my hand-me-down because I never kept it in a case and the chrome back is completely scratched up. She is a beautiful woman and the thought of marring her style with a banged up iPod just seems wrong.

Now, seeing the colorware option, it seems like a perfect solution - I can send away my Gen1 iTouch and have it customized into something that will not only be special to her, but will look brand new when she gets it.
