I am a graphic artist and MS Paint is the only tool I need in my tool box.
What would computers be like without it?

I can’t wait for the dual eraser upgrade. Is it going to be in the Vista SP1?

    ;)

  59. Funny thing to me, is even the winidiots quickly write-off MSPaint as a novelty toy. You don’t have to be an anything-snob to appreciate that.

Considering how Winblows wants to be everything to everybody, finding this little artifact still on new OSes is amusing.

  61. Hahaha, the best part was the guy dressed with the turtle neck. I think the stereotype of the MAC users was the funniest part. You’d think they would come up with a more clever piece of software to make fun of instead of a 15 year old basic graphic application…Oh well.

Oh and just an FYI, paint actually can produce some pretty amazing pieces, check this guy out:

  64. Dan on Mon, 13th Aug 2007 3:33 pm
  65. It’s funny because OS X comes with iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD, 3 pretty powerful multimedia applications and Windows comes with… Paint. Yeah, one could argue that it’s in bad form to make fun of a 15 year old application, but that’s not really what they’re doing, they’re making fun of the fact that the best graphics program included with windows is STILL a 15 year old application. I guess there is the Windows movie program, but that’s as archaic and useless as paint, even though it was written more recently.

It’s not just multimedia where Macs have a leg ahead as far as pack-ins go, though, there are hundreds of really cool tools that come already installed on a new Mac (or on the included install media).

  66. fouber on Mon, 13th Aug 2007 3:34 pm

  75. for those who don’t understand why this is funny.

    - they make it sound like they invented the first paint program. But MS Paint appears to be just a knockoff of MacPaint which was out years before this and others paint programs long before that:
    http://www.computerhistory.org/archive/14_paint.pdf
    - the people are just such perfect geeks/artists
    - its a classic example of tech marketing in the 80’s
    - everybody looks very 80’s
    - the language is so contrived. they try and speak so slowly and often sound like they are speaking like william shatner.
    - it shows how far we’ve come.
    - they talk about how amazing it is that you save a file electronically on disk. wow.
    - they also make it sound like they invented the spray can tool.

check out the (whas was considered high tech) screensavers behind them.

its funny, its history, don’t take it personally.

  80. Frances on Mon, 13th Aug 2007 4:17 pm
  81. I liked it, it’s well-executed. But there’s something the Mac users here seem to forget: the Mac doesn’t have a simple application like Paint in its toolbox. And you know something: it’s pretty damn useful. It doesn’t have a lot of features and I haven’t seen many changes in it [if at all] in all the time I know it, but it’s very useful for simple editing work in graphics. I use it -all the time- at work.

Another one I use every day: the Notepad. Thanks for showing me that one, Edwin! Of course, TextEdit is an extremely powerful text editor and I’ve done some really groovy stuff with it.
But a Paint-like application is not a stupid idea. And the usefullness is proven by the fact that it’s in every version of Windows.

I’m as hardcore a Mac driver as they come, and I’d rather not use a computer than use Windows [at home, don't want to at work but I don't have a choice there] but not every feature in Windows is bad. If you compare it to iLife, it’s a toy, there is just -nothing- like iLife anywhere, certainly not for that money, but that doesn’t mean Paint can’t have any added value. The small apps like Sound Recorder, Notepad and Paint are just about as useful as you could want.

For what it needs to do, Paint kicks butt, and you -can- create art with it, there are examples, but you need some patience :).

Having said that, Paint, Sound Recorder and a few other clever ideas don’t make me a Windows fan. I can run Windows in Boot Camp or in a virtual machine if I wanted to. The idea alone is enough to make me squirm. Mac all the way, baby!

  83. I thought this to be a rather interesting video myself. I didn’t know paint was created by such brainy persons. A few years ago I found paint on my computer that I purchased, and began experimenting with it, to see how it work, and began using it with what I was then studying in art, along with photo shops, the use paint and of photo enhancements, basically for myself to determine who the rightful artists may have been. I do know my own techniques I use in using these programs, are of my own, not actually used by others,.. for making the same determinations, when concerning who correct artists might just happen to have been, when concerning the old masters of fine art.

  85. [to frances] — e-bleeding-xactly. Given Apple don’t want to give people the ability to edit images (yes, I know you can crop in Preview, but that’s not what I need), I’ve spent a lot of time hunting around for a free pixel-based editing app on the Mac, and while there’s the gimp, that’s not really trivial to get going.

Sure, Paint is old and cheesy, but it’s there, it’s free, and it works..

They are introducing a new technology because MS never introduced paint.
What are the selling points in MS paint?

  104. Bob on Mon, 13th Aug 2007 6:27 pm
  105. Alright, Paint sucks ass when compared to other graphics software. But as stated by Francis, it’s a free tool that comes with Windows and does exactly what it should do.

It’s simple, it’s quick and it has most of the simple graphics operations you could want. In fact, Paint has been updated to accept new file-types and has undergone some other tiny improvements. If you’re a designer, you buy PhotoShop, Illustrator or some other high-profile software which is designed specifically to suit your needs. If you really want high-end stuff, you buy a wacom pad and it will give even more possibilities.

The point is, I’m happy MS didn’t bloat Windows with a piece of software which is completely irrelevant to 95% of it’s users. The way these guys are using it to make fun of Windows is stupid and short-sighted. It does exactly what it should do, and as they pointed out, it even has a spray can!

  170. Adrian on Tue, 14th Aug 2007 4:26 am
  171. OK, to the snobbies who think this oh so funny. I travel independently and a lot. And I go to places where sometimes you are just lucky if there is an internet café AND the computer has an USB port. But let me tell you one thing, those WIN98 or WIN2000 machines ALWAYS have a free, simple tool to quickly crop my images and upload them to my travel website. Sure, I could do it server side (I’m a web developer) but uploading 3 MB on a 56k line is boring, so that’s not really an option. Of course I’d prefer to do it in PS - but hei, for some strange reasons the internet café in Shymkent, Kazakhstan didn’t invest over 1k into PS. Darn. Solution: MS Paint. Cheap and easy. And I can still jazz up my images later when I’m at home and have my own computer and software.
So, people, think before you write something. Yes, we all prefer a decent photo editing tool over MSPaint - but there might be people who are glad that Windows comes with some sort of graphic tool at all.

  187. Anyone who is offended by this is missing the point. The people in this video are proposing that the program Paint–simple, limited, and dated–is profoundly beneficial and shows promise in the future of digital media.

It is meant to be sarcastic because Paint would never be considered a choice tool by any professional designer. I doubt the makers of this video were trying to start a platform debate… Adobe makes the products that professionals use (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Flash) and they are readily available on BOTH platforms!

  201. Well i enjoyed it but most PC users dont use paint to replace doing things in real life :P If i wanted to make myself a good picture or edit one i would use photoshop. Ms paint is just a default application for little kids or if you need to do something really quickly.
