Woz re-creates his infamous Datsun 280z commercial for charity

Remember a few weeks back we mentioned Woz’s infamous Datsun z250 commercial? (and the even better Black Gold commercial?). Well, it seems Woz, perhaps inspired by the recent attention that commercial’s re-airing received, has gone ahead and created one of the funniest videos we’ve seen in a long time, and one that really shows off his sense of humor.

Faithful to the original Datsun ad, Woz is seen rolling on his Segway up to his black and gray 2005 Nissan 350Z Anniversary Edition (I guess he really likes the “Z”-mobiles!), touting all its various virtues (yes, even the “sophisticated onboard computer”). The video ends with Woz driving off in the Z to Weird Al Yankovic’s “White and Nerdy“. Just Awesome.

While the video is definitely funny, it turns out there is a somewhat serious story behind it. Woz is offering up his 350Z for charity, specifically to the IEEE lab at U.C. Berkeley for “education and equipment”. Truly a noble goal, for as Woz is right to point out, “On a global scale we are seeing America losing it’s competitiveness in engineering and technical skills. That is disappointing.”

Disappointing indeed.

The car is listed at $100,000, and currently has only 8700 miles on it. In addition to the car, the winner of the auction will win lunch with Woz at his house, and he’ll even sign the car (which I’m not sure is a good or bad thing, but it’s a nice gesture). Woz is nice enough to include a link to the Free CARFAX report for serious bidders as well, and there is a link to ask Woz questions about the car, but somehow I have a feeling it will be put to other uses.

Well, we’re not going to go ahead and claim we are outright responsible for Woz making this video. We’ll leave it to you guys to say that. But one thing is for sure, if Woz has any balls, he will recreate the Black Gold commercial next.
