Methinks Apple is a little TOO hip with the kids

There’s little doubt that Apple’s recent hardware updates are sure to be a hit with the kids, but I must say, I think they might have gone a little overboard in some of their new web copy…

I don’t know, is it just me, or when a major corporation tries to act hip, it just comes off like Betty White telling someone to “take a chill pill”?

Thanks to (what I can only hope will be) faithful Macenstein reader Sofia Fontes for pointing this out.

Well, another Apple special event has come and gone, and odds are you have no idea how you feel about it. Well, fear not, I’m here to tell you what you think. So without further ado, here is what was Good, Bad, and Meh about today’s music event.

The Good

iOS 4.1 – HDR photos, Game Center, Proximity sensor and other bug fixes…. Well, obviously we’d have to test these things out to know for sure, but as a fan of HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, I am really pleased to see this come to the iPhone as a native implementation. As for Game Center, Read more

In fact, it looks like they fixed the antenna issue entirely.

Gamblers put even money on updated iPhone 4 tomorrow

According to the good folks over at Bookmaker.com, who specialize in providing off-beat gambling odds, there’s an even chance that we might see a retooled iPhone tomorrow, among other things.

september apple rumor

I’ll admit I am the worst gambler ever, having literally lost the shirt of my back at one point (a sweet Def Leppard Hysteria tour concert-only exclusive) but I would say the tweaked iPhone 4 is the LEAST likely to happen in my view, while a new iPod touch is all but certain. But then, who am I to argue with the folks who put together lines for television shows such as Project Runway and Dancing with the Stars?

My wfe’s iPhone stolen: Anyone know how to have Find My iPhone “auto refresh” the location?

Well, this evening the Bride of Macenstein’s iPhone was stolen. While I was of course pissed, I was also thrilled at the prospect of using Find My iPhone to find the thing. We’re in a relatively wussy, crime free town, so I figured it would be kids who took her bag and it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Long story short, we tracked the iPhone down to a restaurant, but were of course unable to actually go around shaking down the help and patrons, even with the police helping. Since Find My iPhone really only gives a ballpark location, the cops said there wasn’t much they could do. And while I am now 90% positive it is one of the kids who works at the place who has it, I can’t prove it, and with us and the cops walking around (and one of the cops telling two of the more unsavory employees that I was able to track the iPhone to this location) whoever had the iPhone apparently turned it off, and my location updates stopped.

So, my question is, does anyone know of a way to have Find My iPhone, via the app, or via MobileMe, do some sort of “autorefresh” of the location search, so if they ever DO turn on the iPhone, briefly to wipe it or such, I can get a new bead on the location? Right now it appears I have to relaunch the app on the iPhone to get it to update locations, and the same with the MobileMe page. (Can I make an autorefresh Safari url automator action somehow? Will it keep me logged in to MobileMe if it runs every 30 seconds?) Any ideas would be helpful, thanks.

Update: I got my autorefresh script going, so we’ll see…

Explaining Inception to a Mac user

I know this has been out there for a couple days, but the family went on a little vacation without me (which ironically is the best vacation I could ever want) so I just finally got around to seeing Inception, and I thought this was pretty clever.

Netflix Instant Streaming comes to the iPhone

Netflix on iPhone

This morning I woke up to a Tweet from faithful Macenstein reader @TheJTizzle alerting me that the long-promised Netflix for iPhone has finally been released. It appears to work awesomely, although it seems to be relegated to just instant streaming titles, (ie, you can’t seem to browse current and upcoming DVD releases and add them to your queue as you can on the iPad, unless I’m missing something) but the streaming works great, even over 3G! I must say, with all their Apple device support, Netflix has become one of the few monthly bills I feel I actually get my money’s worth from. That, and my subscription to Highlights magazine.

Laser-powered stripper platform with built-in iPod dock is this year’s MUST HAVE gift

Well, the iPod connector has now officially been put into everything.

Tasked with the the challenge of creating a “coffee table”, London-based designer Moritz Waldemeyer has gone WAAAY above and beyond the call of duty by creating some sort of laser-beam themed GoGo Dancing platform, complete with smoke machine, and yes, an iPod Dock.

This certainly is cooler than my current coffee table, which consists of a 30 Lucky Charms boxes duct-taped together. Finally, now I can enjoy my “Laser Loggins” and “Laser Floyd” in the privacy of my own home. I have already ordered 3 of these, since there’s no way am I sharing with the kids. Thanks to faithful Macenstein reader Steve for the tip!
