ATTENTION BARGAIN HUNTERS! Save $440 off this fart app! ACT NOW!

Despite being a “day one” iPhone owner, I somehow was able to resist buying any of the farting apps, even though in the beginning, that’s all there was. Well, OK, there was Super Monkey Ball, a couple virtual lighter apps, and then the fart apps. And while I like to pride myself on my fart-app resisting fortitude, I may crack under the pressure of this AMAZING bargain.

That’s right, Western Wind, an app previously being sold for $449 (well, previously being LISTED at $449, anyway) is now just $9.99, a price just about anyone can manage.

“Western Wind, once available to the masses, is now an exclusive, limited-edition game. We will be pulling the game from the app store after it sells 50 more copies. This is your chance to join a very exclusive club of Western Wind music aficionados. “

Of course, if you look at the Western Wind’s price history you’ll notice the app usually sold for 99¢, and was even free at some point, but hey, I like to think of it as $440 in my pocket. I just can’t pass up a bargain!

OMG I need two of these so bad!

I am of course referring to the WOMAN, not the Snuggie.

I managed to successfully hold off on buying a Snuggie this holiday season, but a man can only be so strong. I meam, check out this new LEOPARD (as in OS X) Print Snuggie! How cool would I look?!?

I can’t believe the bargain! Apparently if I order now I can get TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE plus a free book light, and I will certainly need two so I can wear one and use the other as a makeshift tent when the Bride of Macenstein kicks me out of the house for buying 2 Leopard print Snuggies…

Attention pushy, over-achieving parents: All Brain Quest iPhone titles on sale now

Whether you are a domineering parent set on your little Doogie Howser congratulating medical school at age 16 or just someone who’s having a hard time justifying buying your 6 year-old their own iPod touch simply to play games (guilty), you really can’t go wrong with the insane price cuts on Modality’s Brain Quest Titles. I actually bought the Brain Quest Grade 2 and Brain Quest Grade 3 versions for my daughter a couple months ago at $9.99 a piece, but this week the titles have all dropped to 99¢.

As far as forced learning goes, I find the Brain Quest games have been a pleasure to use in blackmailing my child into learning. I simply say that before she is allowed to play a REAL game on her iPod touch or watch an episode of Wizards of Waverly Place, she needs to complete a level or two on Brain Quest, and it works like a charm.

Right now all 6 Brain Quest titles: Brain Quest Grade 2, Brain Quest Grade 3, Brain Quest Grade 4, Brain Quest Grade 5, Brain Quest Grade 6, and Brain Quest Grade 7 are all on sale for just 99¢. I picked up grades 4 and 5, figuring by the time she’s ready for grades 6 and 7 she’ll be using an iTablet and whatever apps THAT has.

MacHeist 3 Bundle rears its beautiful, cheap head

MacHeist 3 has arrived, and for the first time the 12 app bundle promises a $627 value for the low low price of $39. Whether you’re interested in cooking a meal, or playing the best puzzle game of last year, or selling off an old item on Ebay, the MacHeist bundle has you covered.

I find these mega software bundles are often hit or miss, but MacHeist 3 has something going for it that for me makes it extra sweet – the awesome World of Goo ($20). I reviewed WOG last year, and it’s still one of the few games I still play every couple weeks. Also on the list are:
iSale $39.95 – eBay online auction tool
Picturesque $34.95 – add cool effects to your web images
SousChef $30.00 – Digital Cooking Assistant
PhoneView $19.95 – Adds access to your iPhone’s Notes, SMS logs, your call history, disk storage, and more
LittleSnapper $39.00 – Easily grab and share images
Acorn $49.95 – Easy to use photo editor
Kinemac $299.00 - Create Real time, professional 3D animation
WireTap Studio $69.00 – record and edit audio o your Mac
and
Big Bang Board Games $24.95 – 7 classic board games

As always, the bundle also features a few “unlockable apps” which are added to the bundle when certain sales goals are hit. This year’s unlockabels are:
BoixTV $199 – “TV studio in a box,” ideal for recording podcasts, seminars, and other events
The Hit List $69.95 – powerful but easy to use task manager
Espresso $80 - stylish new new web editor

I’m going to go out on a limb and say odds are all three of these apps are likely to be added to the bundle, as I believe traditionally all apps have been unlocked in previous MacHeist bundles. 25% of all sales go to charity, and if you order the bundle by clicking on THIS LINK, you will be giving to the greatest charity of all – Macenstein.

Mark Papermaster’s ransom has been paid

Ah, it seems like it was only November 4th when Apple Announced:

Mark Papermaster is joining the Company as senior vice president of Devices Hardware Engineering, reporting to Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Papermaster, who comes to Apple from IBM, will lead Apple’s iPod(R) and iPhone(TM) hardware engineering teams. Papermaster has 25 years of product and technology experience, and was previously a vice president at IBM.

Well, as you may recall, IBM had a thing or two to say about that decision – namely that Papermaster was in violation of the 1-year “no compete” clause in his IBM contract which legally bars him from accepting a job with a competing company. Papermaster at the time attempted to argue that in his 25 years at IBM, he never heard the company describe Apple as a “competitor”, an argument which sounded a little lame to us, but apparently someone somewhere bought it, because today Apple released the following press release:

Mark Papermaster will be coming to Apple as senior vice president of Devices Hardware Engineering, reporting to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, on April 24. Papermaster, who comes to Apple from IBM, will lead Apple’s iPod(R) and iPhone(TM) hardware engineering teams. The litigation between IBM and Mark Papermaster has been resolved.

Actually, odds are Apple paid a huge cash ransom in exchange for Papermaster’s safe return. No word yet on whether Mark has all his fingers intact, but seeing as he is going to be heading up the largely “touch-based” iPod division, we’re hoping the answer is yes or else we have a feeling valuable research dollars are going to be diverted towards a way to navigate an iPod using your nose.

Red Giant’s 1 Day sale – 40% off EVERYTHING – today only

ATTENTION VIDEO PROFESSIONALS! Red Giant Software, the sellers of such indispensable After Effects and Final Cut plug-ins as Trapcode’s Shine and Particular and The Magic Bullet HD Suite is having a one day only sale, TODAY.

That’s right, just enter coupon code bailout40 during checkout and get 40% off your order, which is no small savings as some of these effects are pretty pricey. Personally I will be picking up the Knoll Light Factory Pro, Datamator, and the Magic Bullet HD Suite. And maybe ToonIt. Oh, I can’t decide, they all look so tasty! A quick word of warning, however: be careful about compatibility, as some of these plug-ins inexplicably do not yet support the latest version of After Effects (and we’re almost at the NEXT version of After Effects!). Redefining “refurbished”

Overstock.com is selling what they call an Apple iMAC G5 Laptop (Refurbished). Not sure whether they refurbished an iMac into a laptop, or a laptop into an iMac, but either way, they went above and beyond what we normally expect when we hear “refurbished”.

The description reads: “Take your technology anywhere with this G5 desktop computer”. Anywhere, eh? Like the chiropractor? They list it at 18.5 lbs.

Thanks to faithful Macenstein reader Kyle for the tip!

Faithful Macenstein reader Tim noticed some odd pricing when he clicked on the 99¢ Video button in his QuickTime player. Apparently Apple is selling about 2 pages of 99¢ videos for $1.99.

Above: Looking for a deal? Keep looking.

Here’s the link.

Oddly, if you go through iTunes to the Music Video section and click on their 99¢ music videos box, you get a screen of just 4 correctly priced videos.

“300 Bowl” price drop in honor of “National Bowling Week”

Like most people, odds are you’ve probably called in sick to work today because you’ll be celebrating “National Bowling Week” all week long, and who can blame you? Well, here’s a little something extra to get excited about, in honor of NBW (as it’s known in the industry) TheWay, LTD is dropping the price of its 300 Bowl iPhone game to $1.99 from $3.99.

I have only putted around with the game for a few minutes, but all I’ll say is the drop to $1.99 is certainly a good first step towards where this app should be priced.

Why Apple’s got the “.Mac/iLife 2008 rebate thing” ass-backwards

May 11, 2008 by Dr. Macenstein · 22 Comments

Yes, my loathing of Apple’s .Mac borderline bullying tactics is well documented, but because I am half Vulcan, I can periodically detach myself from my emotional feelings towards .Mac for brief periods of time in order to evaluate the service objectively. To that end, I have analyzed Apple’s latest .Mac promotion and found it to be ass-backwards. Here’s why.

According to IGM, Now through May 26th, .Mac owners can pick up iLife 2008 for $48.98, a savings of $30 off the regular retail price. However, what Apple should REALLY be doing is offering iLife 2008 users .Mac for $30 (or more) off ITS regular $99/ year price tag. The reasoning? Aside from the yearly speed improvements, there’s not all that much incentive for anyone currently using last year’s iLife to upgrade to iLife 2008, unless they already own the .Mac service. Pretty much anything cool in iLife 2008 revolves around having the $99/year .Mac service as well.

I would also wager that there are less than 3 people on the planet who own .Mac and do not have iLife 2008 already. Having .Mac is the ultimate Apple-fanboy status symbol, a sign that tells the world you already own every other product Apple has produced. It is much more likely that Apple would do better to run the opposite promotion, discounting .Mac and enticing current iLife 2008 users (which number in the millions now, thanks to recent Mac sales booms) to get in on the .Mac goodness that Apple makes you work a little too hard to find out that you need in order to use many of iLife 2008’s features.

I’m still holding a small candle of hope that one day Apple will bundle .Mac into the iLife suite (at no additional charge) and move the whole suite to a subscription-based model at $79/year. But of course the problem with holding a candle is you inevitably end up with scorched, wax-covered fingers.
