Clearing the air on the The iTablet - what we know so far
Filed under: Cynicism, Opinion, Rampant Speculation, Rumors, design
Talk of a touchscreen “iTablet” has been around since long before the iPhone (and was perhaps inspired by it), but in recent months the interweb has really sunk its teeth into the idea that Apple WILL be releasing an iTablet-like device at some point. While a profitable market for such a device still seems a bit unlikely, many analysts and Mac enthusiast websites now feel the iTablet is a near certainty. What is NOT a certainty, however, is what the device will be, look like, or cost.
In order to help clarify the iTablet rumors, we have compiled a list of solid iTablet specs below that we feel will help paint a pretty clear picture of what to expect. Read more
Microsoft apparently planning to offer custom-painted MacBooks in new retail stores

Faithful Macenstein reader Brooks writes:
“I was for whatever reason looking through the slides leaked of the new Microsoft retail store and came across something I found rather odd. In the slide about the personalization of products that can be done at the Microsoft store they use some interesting products. I wonder if they’ll be selling Blackberry Pearls (which don’t run Windows Mobile) and Colorware’d MacBook Pros.”

The internet is about to get really annoying
Filed under: Apple Fanboyism, Awesomeness, Cynicism, design
One of my pet peeves (and there are MANY) is the way computers are portrayed in TV and movies (especially the show BONES). I hate how in Hollywood, every single button press, every page scroll, every single piece of text that appears on screen (which for some reason, always does so one letter at a time, like a typewriter) makes a beep, pip, bloop, or what have you, and I especially hate how different screens of information (usually professionally taken mug shots of 3rd world terror suspects) swirl around in an inefficient and annoying manner. Sure, it looks cool… until you imagine having to use it.
Well, looks like the future of the web might be the annoying present of Hollywood if this demo of “3D CSS Visual Effects” in Snow Leopard’s Safari by Charles Ying is any indication.
Sure, it looks cool NOW, but imagine trying to really find information this way. I know the point of the demo is to dazzle us with eye candy and inspire the mind to think of things to come, but I have a bad feeling in 2 years every blog is going to look like this and the world’s productivity will freeze dead in its tracks. Or at least mine will. Because there is no way I will be able to resist making a Mac Chick picture wall like that. No way.

A nano that can hold 47 trillion songs

Fashion designer Sir Paul Smith got a pretty cool birthday gift from his fellow Brit and BFF Jonathan Ive – a giant pink iPod nano.
On a sad note, four seconds after this picture was taken the giant pink nano was lost in Paul Smith’s cluttered shit hole of an office.
This is one of those cool things that as an Apple fanatic I see and think “Oh my God! That’s Awesome!” and then after looking around my house for a second, I think, “Where the hell would I put that?” I know if I were to get that in the mail, it would only end up collecting dust in the garage out by the Bowflex I never use. At least I can hang wet laundry on the Bowflex to dry… The Giant Pink nano is more or less useless. In fact, I have a feeling Jonny was probably just cleaning out his office and saw an opportunity to pawn off some garbage as a free gift. So Mr. Ive, you’ll have to do better than that for MY birthday next year (March 1st, FYI). I demand a little more thought in MY gifts.

Apple rips us off once again

In response to Apple’s 1 year app store celebration graphic, faithful Macenstein reader meggert writes: “didn’t you do something awhile back where you arranged a bunch of apps by color?”
Quite right, meggert. The day was July 29th, 2008, and I was so bored I arranged all my iPhone’s icons by color (see below).
Of course, I think now I pretty much have all 56,000 apps on the app store, so I could likely make an even more impressive rainbow, but I’m not into showboating.
This is not the first time Apple infringed on my amazingly original idea of icon arrangement. At WWDC this year Apple made a giant wall of icons, all sorted by color, and forgot to mention me.
