Hi Doc!
A few months ago, my brother came to me and asked for a computer which can run some games, runs Mac Os X, looks cool, and costs below 500€ (including monitor, keyboard and all), because he spends most of his money on amps and guitars.
So we had almost no options. A real Mac was way to expensive, and just buying a cheap computer and installing a hacked Os X didn’t fulfill the coolness-factor.A friend of mine and I came up with the idea of the Frankenmac, in short “Frank”.
We took our old iMac (G3 / 333 Mhz / 192 MB Ram) and converted it.
I love stuff like this. It’s probably a good thing I never learned to solder or I would have a whole bunch of oddly configured electronics throughout my house posing a number of fire risks. Of course, as with all hackintosh jobs, you sort of wonder why they didn’t just get a Mac mini… but hey, in things like this, the journey is sometimes as important as the destination. Is iTunes 9 sporting “Marble”?
Filed under: Apple Fanboyism, Rampant Speculation, design, iTunes
Looks like Apple’s rumored “unified interface”, code-named “Marble” might be a comin’ after all… starting with the somewhat UN-unifying iTunes 9 interface.
Faithful Macenstein reader Patrick writes:
“Hey, if you notice the new look on itunes 9 it is very different than snow leopard etc etc. But is this the marble theme apple said would be included into snow leopard but never turned up. Remember in the past itunes received the new “leopard” look before leopard came out. HMMMM whatd’ya think?”
I think you’re onto something. It certainly looks quite different than iPhoto and iTunes 8 and even Snow Leopard’s Safari…
Clearing the air on the The iTablet - what we know so far
Filed under: Cynicism, Opinion, Rampant Speculation, Rumors, design
Talk of a touchscreen “iTablet” has been around since long before the iPhone (and was perhaps inspired by it), but in recent months the interweb has really sunk its teeth into the idea that Apple WILL be releasing an iTablet-like device at some point. While a profitable market for such a device still seems a bit unlikely, many analysts and Mac enthusiast websites now feel the iTablet is a near certainty. What is NOT a certainty, however, is what the device will be, look like, or cost.
In order to help clarify the iTablet rumors, we have compiled a list of solid iTablet specs below that we feel will help paint a pretty clear picture of what to expect. Read more
Microsoft apparently planning to offer custom-painted MacBooks in new retail stores

“I was for whatever reason looking through the slides leaked of the new Microsoft retail store and came across something I found rather odd. In the slide about the personalization of products that can be done at the Microsoft store they use some interesting products. I wonder if they’ll be selling Blackberry Pearls (which don’t run Windows Mobile) and Colorware’d MacBook Pros.”

The internet is about to get really annoying
Filed under: Apple Fanboyism, Awesomeness, Cynicism, design
One of my pet peeves (and there are MANY) is the way computers are portrayed in TV and movies (especially the show BONES). I hate how in Hollywood, every single button press, every page scroll, every single piece of text that appears on screen (which for some reason, always does so one letter at a time, like a typewriter) makes a beep, pip, bloop, or what have you, and I especially hate how different screens of information (usually professionally taken mug shots of 3rd world terror suspects) swirl around in an inefficient and annoying manner. Sure, it looks cool… until you imagine having to use it.
Well, looks like the future of the web might be the annoying present of Hollywood if this demo of “3D CSS Visual Effects” in Snow Leopard’s Safari by Charles Ying is any indication.
Sure, it looks cool NOW, but imagine trying to really find information this way. I know the point of the demo is to dazzle us with eye candy and inspire the mind to think of things to come, but I have a bad feeling in 2 years every blog is going to look like this and the world’s productivity will freeze dead in its tracks. Or at least mine will. Because there is no way I will be able to resist making a Mac Chick picture wall like that. No way.
