Contest: WWDC invite Wurdle
THANK YOU< WE HAVE A WINNER, and it is DAVE with the word "HAYMAKER"! Congrats Dave!
Attention Wurdle fans! We took at look at the new WWDC invitation Apple just put out, and the SECOND thing that popped into our head was, “Wow, that looks kinda like Wurdle!” So to that end, we thought it would be interesting to put out a challenge… What is the longest “Wurdle-style” word you can make from the WWDC invite? If you are not familiar with Wurdle, the object is to “draw” a word path from letter to letter, trying to make the longest word possible. Your finger can move in any direction, so long as the letters are touching and have not already been used. (See our “Mayor” example above).
Winner will get a $20 iTunes gift card (US only).
In the very likely event of a tie, we will use Scrabble point values to determine a winner. If there is still a tie, um, well, the first person who posted the longest of the tied word wins. And NO, you CANNOT use “MAYOR”.
Contest ends April 1st.
Good luck!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Well, St. Patrick’s Day kind of snuck up on us this year, so we’re just going to go ahead and do what we did last year, give away an obnoxious Bagpiping iPhone ringtone to you all!

Above: Bill puts the “Mac” in “McEvoy”.
Yes, we’re well aware that our readers are raging alcoholics and will likely begin drinking at 5PM this afternoon (if they haven’t already), and not stop until sometime after Labor Day. So, in an effort to give you guys something stupid to do in between blackouts, we’ve had Macenstein’s head bagpiper, Bill McEvoy, whip up us an iPhone-compatible ringtone you can impress your friends with while celebrating the 3rd-least important US holiday there is, St. Paddy’s Day. (Oh, and if you are in the NY/NJ area and need a bagpiper (and who doesn’t?), Bill’s your man!).
While all bagpipe songs are annoying enough to make a good ringtone, Bill settled on the classic “The Minstrel Boy“, and as it turns out, it makes a truly ear-splitting ringtone, capable of cutting through the din of even the noisiest bar.
Installing the ringtone should be easy. Simply download it from the link below, be sure your iTunes library is set to “Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized” in iTunes’ “Advanced” preference tab, and drag this bad boy into the main iTunes window. You should then be able to sync to your iPhone from the Ringtones tab. Enjoy, and thanks again, Bill!
Right-Click here to download Macenstein’s “The Mistrel Boy” ringtone, and hit “Save Target File As…”. Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Macenstein!
It approaches…

Win one of 5 copies of TranslateIt! for Mac!
“Moje genitálie jsou schopni zmrazit Äas.” Ahh, if you only knew how many times that phrase helped me out when I was in Czechoslovakia. What? You don’t speak Czech? Oh. Well, if you owned TranslateIt! for the Mac, you’d know what I just said (and you’d have a new found respect for me). Well, luckily for you, TranslateIt! has decided to give us Five 1- year licenses of their extremely cool translation software to give away to you, our most faithful of faithful readers.
Yes, studies have shown that most of us (particularly in America) are not as multi-lingual as we should be, but thanks to TranslateIt!, we can pretend we are! TanslateIt! has one of the slickest interfaces I have seen in any application, and it actually is a testament to its coolness that it makes translating things fun. I’ve been playing with the app for about half an hour so far and I am still finding new features. Key highlights (IMO) are:
• full text translation
• lots of free dictionaries for a great number of languages
• support for custom dictionaries,
• ability to look up words in any cocoa application by just moving the pointer over them
• translation from clipboard
• drag-and-drop translation
• text to speech
• a Spotlight-like ’search as you type’ input method
• and a totally customizable dictionary display.
You can even use TranslateIt! as a teaching tool, as it can print Flash cards as well as quiz you in its Word Quiz game.
TranslateIt! claims it can translate to and from any language - and I did see a dictionary listed for every language of any country I imagine has a computer in it. Pretty much the only language missing is Klingon, but the good news is you can always add Klingon yourself as a custom dictionary, as TranslateIt! has an integrated converter for XDXF, Apple Dictionary, DSL, DCT formats, and the upcoming version will able work with most popular online dictionaries.
To enter: Just tell us what is the one language you wish you spoke fluently. (Personally, I’m still working on English…). Contest is open for 10 days to all readers worldwide. Thanks, and good luck!
Happy Birthday to me - now here’s your present!
THANK YOU WE HAVE OUR WINNER. THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.]
Well, March is my birthday month – truly a time for the whole world to celebrate! And while this particular birthday kind of sucked for me, what with the site going down all weekend, that doesn’t mean that EVERYONE should be miserable. So in honor of the blessed event, I have decided to give you guys a present in the form of a chance to win a 16 GB iPod touch* (I would have made it a 32 GB, but you freeloaders apparently never buy stuff through our ads).
Now, this one’s not going to be quite as simple as just leaving a comment on my site… Well, I guess it kind of IS, but with a twist. This time, it’s all about how fast you can leave a comment on my site. Confused? Good! Here’s the deal:
