Our good friends over at TheAppleLounge have received some screenshots of a beta of AutoCad running on the Mac.

According to the user, the software “va una chiavica”, which loosely translates to “works like shit”. But it’s a very very early beta, so we predict by next month it will have progressed to working like crap.

Protect yourself from imaginary Mac viruses for FREE with ClamXav

What the –? The MyDoom virus?!??! Well, that’s what you get for keeping mail from 2007…

As a Mac user there’s no greater feeling than hearing that a Windows-using friend of yours has lost important data due to a virus. Oh sure, you feel a little bad for them, but odds are as a Mac user of any length of time, you’ve smugly told them at least a couple times before how much you love your Mac and how great it is to no longer have to worry about things like viruses and Trojans and such, and they just didn’t listen. But as good as being able to say “I told you so” feels, you’d still feel like a royal ass if it turned out that it was YOU who passed the virus on to them, right?

“Wait,” you say” “How could I give them a virus? I’m a on a Mac!” True. But while at the moment you personally can’t be harmed by an e-mail attachment, that doesn’t mean you can’t accidentally pass it along to your Windows loving friends. Sure, it’s not YOUR job to keep them safe, but hey, like it or not the majority of the world still uses Windows, and a little internet common courtesy never hurt anyone. Besides, while it’s nice to think Macs are invulnerable to attack, ALL computers are susceptible to e-mail phishing attacks, and the truth is it’s only a matter of time before a hacker from some former Soviet Union republic gets bored of writing Windows viruses and turns his attention to the Mac OS. And remember, if you’re a user of a Windows emulator like Parallels or Fusion, believe it or not you’re now as vulnerable to a Windows virus as the rest of the world (although it should be sandboxed and not able to hurt your Mac files, it can still wreak havoc on your PC files).

Of course, a 1 in a million chance of getting a virus and the good internet Samaritan syndrome doesn’t mean you need to run out and drop $100 on a Mac anti-virus program – there’s a perfectly capable, AND FREE Mac anti-virus app out there called ClamXav. Read more

Apple iPhone OS 4 Event – The Good, The Bad, and the Meh

Today’s Yesterday’s iPhone OS 4 preview was chock full of announcements, and I’d wager to say there was at least something for everyone to like (assuming you don’t run an iPhone advertising or social community). As always when there is a big Apple event, we like to go over the key points of the day, and rate them as either good, bad, or meh. So sit back, relax, and prepare to have your opinions formed for you. Read more

Adobe: 7 million people attempt to download Flash each month to their iPhones

Adobe unleashed a pretty damaging statistic in the whole “You Suck” , “Well you smell!” thing going on between Apple and Adobe right now. Apparently despite Steve Jobs’ claims that Flash is on the way out, Adobe reports that over 7 million iPhone and iPod touch users attempted to install Flash on their iPhones in the month of December alone. Stats were measured based on unsuccessful attempts to install Flash from Adobe.com.

I’m not positive whether 7 million attempts directly translates into 7 million iPhone/iPod touch users – it’s entirely possible it’s just ONE GUY who really doesn’t get it – but I would imagine that it’s pretty obvious that at the moment at least, quite a few people would be willing to take a “buggy, crash prone” Flash implementation on their iPhone than none at all.

I know I misses my Webkinz!

“filemaker for iphone is very near. im at the conference right now. They seem to be very careful n this news and we all had to sign for it too… crazy unlike other filemakers.. also filemaker 11 as well. Some of the new features include grouped layouts, more triggers, and graphs built into filemaker… kinda like bento but much more powerful… we didnt get to play with it yet though… we will see it again I believe the end of conference”

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

When it comes to making iPhone apps, if you snooze, you lose

Last October I had what I thought was a killer idea for an iPhone app. I know, I know, who hasn’t? But this was (I thought) a better idea than another Suduko puzzle or restaurant tip calculator, it was actually a fairly unique idea. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I am an animator, and while I can muddle my way through basic PHP and Flash’s Actionscript, and write some After Effects and Maya expressions, I am HARDLY a programmer. So I put out a vague call to my readers looking for help in making an iPhone app.

Since I felt it was an idea with some potential, I didn’t want to broadcast all the specifics of the idea. I described the programming requirements thusly:

“The app in question would rely heavily on accessing information from a website and then plotting that information on a Google Maps display based on the iPhone’s current location (GPS) or Zip code (sort of like a restaurant or movie finder app, but slightly more involved)… at the risk of sounding melodramatic, I feel my app could potentially save lives.”

The responses I got ranged from “I’ll help for $10,000″ to “Sorry Doc, ideas are a dime a dozen”.

So I picked up a “beginning iPhone Programming” book, but quickly realized it wasn’t going to be enough for my needs. I decided to ask around the developer-sphere for help, starting with Erica Sadun (hey, why not start at the top?). I don’t think Read more

Review: SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone – A hobbled app still manages to shine

Smart phone owners are notoriously loyal and defensive about their handset of choice, and like a good soldier I have vigorously proselytized the benefits of the iPhone to any Blackberry user I have run into. For the most part this was easy, as the only real argument I couldn’t defend was the iPhone’s lack of a physical keyboard, which to me was a non-issue. However, there was ONE trick the Blackberry could do that had me more than a little envious, and that was the ability to stream live TV via a Slingbox. It wasn’t so much that I even really wanted to watch TV on my iPhone, but the fact that my iPhone physically couldn’t while Blackberry users could for some reason got me steamed.

Well, that all ended about 6 weeks ago when the good folks at Sling Media hooked me up with a beta of their SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone. SlingPlayer Mobile allows Slingbox owners to watch live TV, streamed from their homes, on their iPhones. What’s more, if you happen to own a DVR, SlingPlayer Mobile allows you to control that as well, meaning you can watch your recorded shows and movies and access On Demand Programming, as well as pause and rewind live TV, just as if you were watching from home.

What’s a Slingbox?

For those of you unfamiliar with what a Slingbox is, basically it is a device which you can hook to almost any audio/video source and control remotely from your computer or mobile device, from anywhere in the world where Read more

Why?

Safari

I’m not a huge fan of Yahoo! over Google, but I’m also not a fan of Apple giving Windows users more options when using their software than Mac users. So why is it that Apple allows Windows users testing the Safari 4 beta to choose Yahoo! as their search agent over Google, while Mac users cannot?

I have no idea what this just did…

Hooray, another enigmatic Apple update! Anyone know what this did? I assume this now resets my AT&T contract period and gives them the right to charge me for internet radio usage. I guess I’ll find out next month…

iPhone breast jiggling war illustrates “Double-D” sized problem for iPhone developers

February 2, 2009 by Dr. Macenstein · 9 Comments

An iPhone breast jiggling battle is quietly brewing between Tod Baudais of iJiggles and Jon Atherton of Wobble, and as it escalates, it threatens to tear apart the very fabric of breast jiggling on the iPhone. I can only hope we can stop it in time.

Above: Wobble and iJiggles. Aren’t there enough breasts to go around?

Both apps launched within days of each other, with Wobble hitting the store two days before iJiggles, but both obviously being developed independently. Both apps earned media attention when it was discovered they could be used as a work around for those despondent over the 3D breast jiggling app iBoobs being denied a spot on the iTunes store.

At first it appeared that there were plenty of breasts to go around, and both apps enjoyed brisk sales. However, behind the scenes, the groundwork for a litigious war was slowly being laid. You see, according to Tod from Smells Like Donkey, the creators of iJiggles, last week Wobble decided to change the name of their app from “Wobble” to “Wobble-3D-Jiggle”, a move iJiggles interpreted as an attempt to use their app’s name to help drive sales of Wobble. When Smells Like Donkey noticed this, they decided turn about would be fair play, and changed the name of their app from “iJiggles” to “iJiggles-3D-Wobble”.

Well, apparently Jon over at Wobble didn’t get the joke, as indicated by Read more
