Acrobatic Apple thieves “steal different”

In a world of “Smash and Grab” Apple thefts and gun-totting thugs, it’s nice to see a professional Apple Heist where no-one gets hurt. Case in point, the theft of 20 Apple laptops from a South Brunswick, NJ Best Buy where the thieves apparently pulled a Tom Cruise, descending from ropes in the ceiling to avoid setting off alarms, and then jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch proclaiming their love for Katie Holmes.

On top of the building, they used a saw to cut through several inches of rubber and insulation, then sliced a 3-foot-wide square in the metal roof,” said Detective James Ryan.

They cut a hole in the roof and came in at a spot where the cameras were obscured by advertising banners.

Once inside, the burglars dropped 16 feet to 10-foot-tall racks — avoiding contact with the floor, where motion sensors would have set off an alarm. They snatched the notebooks from the racks, then went back out through the roof.

Maybe it’s the entertainment industry’s glorification of well thought-out thieves with cool tools and clock-work timing, but I Kind of dig these guys. I think whenever you see someone who’s good at their job, whatever it is, it’s nice to take a second and let them know you respect their skill. So, kudos to them. Plus they apparently have great taste.

People who live in glass houses shouldn’t sell MacBooks

Here’s something you’ll never see at a Microsoft retail store – a well-orchestrated “smash and grab” of desirable merchandise.

I was going to try to make some lame joke about about “Windows Crashes even at the Apple Store”, but I guess since it is technically a door, I can’t. I think the open-air mall locations just aren’t working for Apple. This is about the 5th or so break-in I’ve heard about recently.

iPod nano for just $49 (plus your Social Security Number)

Scoring an iPod nano for $100-off might seem like one of those deals that’s too good to be true, and guess what? It is. But that doesn’t mean that a bunch of people weren’t foolish enough to be taken in by this official-looking Apple clone of a site called theonedaynanosale.com that sprung up this morning. Yes, appearing in ads on Facebook early this morning, it came and went within hours, but that was apparently enough time for Apple to have to field a number of support calls about it.

Of course, like most scams, you kind of have to wonder at the intelligence of the person who would fall for this. I mean, when was the last time you had to enter your Social Security number to buy something on-line? Especially in order to “Identify your identity”?

As we mentioned, the site came and went fairly fast (it was pulled around 3PM), leaving only this small trace on nsspy showing that theonedaynanosale.com was registered early this morning, so hopefully not too many people are sitting by their mailboxes expecting the Apple bunny to hop up with their multi-colored bundle of nano joy.

“iFlighter Control” totally revamps the Flight Control genre

If you look quickly at these shots of the new game iFlighter Control you might foolishly think the game is a total rip-off of the wildly successful game Flight Control which has dominated the iTunes charts for months. But if you look closely, you’ll notice that the developers cleverly moved the pause button to the top of the screen from the bottom, thus totally changing the gameplay, and completely justifying Apple letting this original gem of a game through. Bravo Apple! Bravo!

As you can see, the games may APPEAR identical, right down to the fonts, but by moving the placement of the pause button, iFlighter Control’s developers really pushed the envelope in game development, and deserve to be applauded.
