My wfe’s iPhone stolen: Anyone know how to have Find My iPhone “auto refresh” the location?
Filed under: Apple Fanboyism, Not Cool, Theft, Users Helping Users, You Bet I'm Pissed, iPhone
Well, this evening the Bride of Macenstein’s iPhone was stolen. While I was of course pissed, I was also thrilled at the prospect of using Find My iPhone to find the thing. We’re in a relatively wussy, crime free town, so I figured it would be kids who took her bag and it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Long story short, we tracked the iPhone down to a restaurant, but were of course unable to actually go around shaking down the help and patrons, even with the police helping. Since Find My iPhone really only gives a ballpark location, the cops said there wasn’t much they could do. And while I am now 90% positive it is one of the kids who works at the place who has it, I can’t prove it, and with us and the cops walking around (and one of the cops telling two of the more unsavory employees that I was able to track the iPhone to this location) whoever had the iPhone apparently turned it off, and my location updates stopped.
So, my question is, does anyone know of a way to have Find My iPhone, via the app, or via MobileMe, do some sort of “autorefresh” of the location search, so if they ever DO turn on the iPhone, briefly to wipe it or such, I can get a new bead on the location? Right now it appears I have to relaunch the app on the iPhone to get it to update locations, and the same with the MobileMe page. (Can I make an autorefresh Safari url automator action somehow? Will it keep me logged in to MobileMe if it runs every 30 seconds?) Any ideas would be helpful, thanks.
Update: I got my autorefresh script going, so we’ll see…

HURRY! Get unlimited iPhone tethering for just 99¢!
If you missed out on Netshare, the first and only tethering app to make it to the iTunes store (before being pulled 24 hours later) now is your chance to snag Handy Light, a 99¢ tethering app that is currently masquerading as a “Flash Light” app. Appshopper has posted instructions on how to get it working, but since it is likely going to be just a matter of seconds before Apple pulls it, I would suggest you head over to iTunes and grab it first, THEN go see how to use it. 99¢ sure beats an unliited monthly data plan plus the tethering package.

iTunes book store hacked?
A quick look at the books category on iTunes and it’s no wonder that rumors of an iTunes hack are surfacing.
It seems that suddenly a certain Thuat Nguyen (who has no website or contact info on iTunes) now has 40 of the top 50 books being sold on iTunes, and what’s more he/she is buying them with other people’s iTunes accounts (up to $200 worth per account) if the comments being left on the titles are any indication.
Now of course, we COULD all just be jumping to conclusions, and maybe these 40 Vietnamese/Manga titles just happen to kick so much ass that they are rocketing up the US charts on their own merit, BUT… it still might be a good idea to check your recent purchases and freshen up that password.

The dude who found the iPhone 4G was a PC user

Original image via Wired
That’s right people. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – a PC user will steal ANYTHING that isn’t nailed down.
According to a new report from Wired which highlights some key parts of a recently unsealed document outlining the details of the ongoing investigation against 21 year-old Brian Hogan:
“Warner [Brian's roommate] directed the police to the nearby Sequoia Christian Church, where the cops recovered Hogan’s black desktop PC and flatscreen monitor outside an administrative office. “
Black… desktop… PC.
Jon Stewart gives his take on the whole iPhone 4G thing

The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart voiced his opinion on the lost/stolen iPhone 4G that seems to have landed Gizmodo in so much trouble. I won’t ruin which side of the fence Jon lands on here, but I DID get this link from the Gizmodo Australia website… Enjoy.

Man gives thieves the finger in iPad theft

OK, actually, he didn’t give it to them, they took it, along with his two iPads. Ouch.
(yeah, it’s Flash only, get over it).

Steve jobs calls the kettle “black”

“It’s just common sense not to use another company’s trademarks in your app name.”
Those are the words of Steve Jobs in response to an e-mail from app developer Chris Ostmo whose journalPad app was just forced to undergo an expensive re-branding or risk being pulled from the app store for including the word “Pad” in the title. The problem of course is (aside from the fact that Apple does not actually own a trademark on the word “Pad”) is Apple has done the EXACT SAME THING in the past. In fact, it only recently obtained the legal rights to use the term “iPhone” for its phone from Cisco, and the term “iPad” from Fujitsu. Both companies had products selling under those names at the time that Apple decided to put theirs out, yet they went ahead and used another company’s trademarks in their product name.
One could argue that Apple’s tactics are far worse than those of Ostmo, as no one would confuse his app with an actual iPad, where Apple was stealing other company’s hardware trademarks and slapping them on their hardware. One accidental internet order could make for a very unhappy (although presumably stupid) customer.
Still, as is the way of big business, the big fish eats the little fish, and Apple had the millions of dollars to buy the trademarks out from its fellow tech giants, where odds are Ostmo can’t buy “Pad” from Apple.
Even if it owned it.
Which it doesn’t.

Acrobatic Apple thieves “steal different”
Filed under: Apple Fanboyism, MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Theft
In a world of “Smash and Grab” Apple thefts and gun-totting thugs, it’s nice to see a professional Apple Heist where no-one gets hurt. Case in point, the theft of 20 Apple laptops from a South Brunswick, NJ Best Buy where the thieves apparently pulled a Tom Cruise, descending from ropes in the ceiling to avoid setting off alarms, and then jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch proclaiming their love for Katie Holmes.
On top of the building, they used a saw to cut through several inches of rubber and insulation, then sliced a 3-foot-wide square in the metal roof,” said Detective James Ryan.
They cut a hole in the roof and came in at a spot where the cameras were obscured by advertising banners.
Once inside, the burglars dropped 16 feet to 10-foot-tall racks — avoiding contact with the floor, where motion sensors would have set off an alarm. They snatched the notebooks from the racks, then went back out through the roof.
Maybe it’s the entertainment industry’s glorification of well thought-out thieves with cool tools and clock-work timing, but I Kind of dig these guys. I think whenever you see someone who’s good at their job, whatever it is, it’s nice to take a second and let them know you respect their skill. So, kudos to them. Plus they apparently have great taste.
Thanks to faithful Macenstein reader Jimbo for the tip!

People who live in glass houses shouldn’t sell MacBooks
Here’s something you’ll never see at a Microsoft retail store – a well-orchestrated “smash and grab” of desirable merchandise.
I was going to try to make some lame joke about about “Windows Crashes even at the Apple Store”, but I guess since it is technically a door, I can’t. I think the open-air mall locations just aren’t working for Apple. This is about the 5th or so break-in I’ve heard about recently.
