How to: Create Custom Mask Effects For Photo Booth
Filed under: Apple Fanboyism, Awesomeness, Hacks, Tips/How To
Like most kids their age, faithful Macenstein readers Len and Jordan were messing around with Quartz Composer’s input parameters and Photo Booth last Friday night, and they figured out a relatively easy way to create your own Photo Booth masks. And by relatively easy, I mean even I could follow the instructions.

How To: Unlock Pocket God enemies in The Creeps!
Pocket God’s creators have been doing some sneaky cross-promotion lately, allowing their happy little Pygmy Islanders to pop up in other developer’s games as secret unlockables. The latest, and coolest such Pocket God came is is one of my favorite games, The Creeps! Whether you’re a fan of Pocket God, or if you just want a couple new Creeps to battle, this hint is sure to add hours to the already enjoyable gameplay of the Creeps! Read more
The “Mighty Dead” mouse
Apple hasn’t updated the Mighty Mouse in quite some time, but those of you dying for a refresh can make your own out of things you probably have in your own home! All you need is and old (still functioning) USB mouse, and an old (NOT functioning) real one!
That’s right, assuming you are a fan of taxidermy, Instructables.com has a tutorial on how you can turn that dead mouse you have lying around on the basement into a real life working computer mouse, and it looks great with an Apple laptop, don’tcha think?
This would be great for kids – They love stuffed animals.

How to: Triple the length of your Fieldrunners Maze
Filed under: Games, Product Reviews, Tips/How To, iPhone
As many of you know, we here at Macenstein are obsessed with the game Fieldrunners the tower defense game we named our iPhone Game of the Year. There are likely as many ways to build a Fieldrunners maze as their are Fieldrunners players, but odds are, no matter how awesome your maze is, SOMETHING got through – be it a tank, a motorcycle, or one of those big orange robots. “If only my maze was a little longer!” I hear you shout. Well, I’m here to show you a trick that will actually let you double or triple (or more!) the size of your Fieldrunners maze. I’m not saying this is the definitive maze of death, but it’s a cool trick you should have in your Fieldrunners arsenal. Here’s how:
See this maze. This is what you want to make.

I’m not going to show you how to make it, you should be able to figure it out, and actually it doesn’t have to be exactly like this, but it needs to be similar. The key to extending your maze is these 2 squares. The first arrow is the “plug”, the second arrow is “the hole”.

Anyone know how to take the contents of a Finder Window and make an Excel file out of it?
This is just a purely selfish post – we’re looking for a suggestion. Right now in The Lab we are backing up our video files to 400 GB LTO tapes. The problem is, we don’t really have a great way to search through the contents of those tapes without loading them one by one and then doing a search. Right now we are simply taking screen grabs of the Finder windows, printing them out (ie killing trees), and stroing them with the tapes in a library, which as you can imagine, seems like taking 5 steps back in efficiency. What we’d really like to be able to do is is grab the contents of a Finder window (for example, the folder full of video projects, folders and files we are backing up to the tape), and export it to an Excel sheet or XML file of some sort that we could search through quickly to figure out which tape a file or project is on. Any ideas? Thanks!
