Faithful Macenstein reader (and now our official Senior Chinese Correspondent) Min has assembled a video of the Apple Store grand opening in Shanghai, China. You know, watching this video, I almost feel like I was there… mainly because I’ve been to about 5 Apple Store grand openings already, and they are all the same. Still, the Shanghai store is pretty impressive, so it’s nice to get a video walk through. Nice work, Min.

It’s OK guys, you can laugh

Sometimes as fanboys our first reaction to a video like the following is an immediate “rush to defend” mentality that has us attempting justify Apple’s design choices in creating the iPad, and sometimes we end up saying stupid things like “I wouldn’t even want one if it had a camera” or some other such nonsense. But honestly, funny is funny, and this is pretty good.

iPad comic is impressive, if not funny

Behold Adam Kontra, a comedian who is no stranger to gimmicks, showing off his latest act, the iPad Comic. While Adam’s timing is certainly impeccable, his material is somewhat more peccable. Still, it’s an impressive feat of timing, and I’m sure we’ll see Adam on SNL soon, as they are no stranger to clever premises that go on a bit too long.

Does the iPad’s accelerometer work in Zero Gravity?

Kind of…

While these Swiss “Astronauts” appear to think it does not work, the iPad clearly DOES change rotation about 39 seconds in. Still, I think I’ll probably postpone my $35 million trip to the International Space Station until Apple gets its priorities straight and starts devoting more resources towards getting its devices zero-G certified.

On line at the Sydney iPad Sleepout

Faithful Macenstein reader Jeremy Moses sent us this very cool mini documentary he and his friends at Variety Garage made giving us a glimpse behind the scenes of the iPad launch at Sydney’s Flagship Apple Store. (Well, really it appears to be a documentary of one very cute line waiter named “Jade” who for the record has an open invitation to be our Mac Chick of the Month), but it’s still very interesting to see what goes on during one of these overnight launch day campouts, and who’s actually on line. Their dedication ALMOST makes my 1 hour wait outside Best Buy on launch day pale in comparison. Almost.

Ahh… but can he make Ghidorah disappear?

Out of all the careers in the world, I would assume a Magician has got to be one of the least rewarding (ranking just above writing for a Mac blog). Even if you’re really good, odds are you won’t make any money and die alone obscurity (or the Poconos). I can’t tell whether this guy is famous or not, and I lack the interest to Google him, but I DO know two things about him:

1 – He’s pretty good (not GREAT, but pretty good)
2 – He’s rich enough to afford an iPad and a video camera.

So ladies, snap him up before he hits the big time and gets as famous as his apparently less obscure friend DiaGo (who is also pretty obscure, at least outside of Japan).

Apple – The most romantic OS on the planet

Everyone knows the French are the most romantic people on the planet. After all, they have a 1063 ft erection in the middle of their capital (Ba dum bum!). Well, faithful Macenstein reader Jordan sent us a link to a love song by French singing sensation Calogero which not only makes heavy use of Mac imagery in the video, but the song itself is called “Pomme C”, or “Apple C”, which to all you johnny come latelys is what they Command Key used to be called on old Macs (or for extra Mac geek street cred, you could call it the “open-Apple key”).

Actually, I can’t really guarantee Calogero is an actual “singing sensation” – I couldn’t get a straight answer as to what his English-singing counterpart might be, but his record company seems to have thrown a decent chunk of change into the production of his video, so I’ll assume he’s more popular than Jerry Lewis. Plus anyone who remembers the Apple Key is likely a long time Mac users, so he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Be sure to look for the shout out to QuickTime. (English translation of the lyrics below, courtesy of Jordan).

Pomme C (Apple C) by Calogero
I have her picture.
I have her email.
Her heart at the tip of the keyboard.

I have her face.
And her envy.
Without ever having touched it.
Must I save it?
Or just abandon it?

Apple, it’s a man and a woman.
And it’s all a program.
An artificial sky.
Apple, who lights me up and leaves me.
We love too quickly.
Our lives are virtual.

She writes me.
But my screen formats the feelings.

But I imagine that a machine
Could only pretend.
My goddess.
She is not really real.
A little love, copied and pasted
A little love, apple c.
A little love downloaded.
A little love to save, to save.
But love is not virtual.
Or should I just abandon it?

Prepare to be pulled over – Scosche unveils its iPad car mount

Oddly enough just yesterday morning I tried to put my iPad into a Magellan iPhone GPS cradle to see if I could use any core location-based navigation apps on the iPad, and the answer was unfortunately “No”. However, despite navigation apps apparently not being an option on the iPad, it looks like Scosche feels there will be enough demand from those people looking to Tweet and play Plants Vs Zombies while driving to create a car iPad mounting system called the iKit.

I don’t know… I actually had a near fatal fall just walking around my house while using the iPad this week, so this just sort of screams “trouble”. There’s no doubt this ranks a 10 on the Geek-o-meter in terms of sheer awesomeness, but on the other hand, I can’t really think of any reason to have an iPad right up front with me while driving. I suppose with the iPad 3G’s presumed ability to use cell towers to get a rough idea of location, it’s possible you might be able to use Google Maps on an iPad, but it won’t be nearly as accurate as the iPhone 3Gs. (I stand corrected, the iPad 3G actually DOES have a real GPS chip, and therefore this would be pretty sweet for navigation apps. Thanks guys!) Personally I think it makes more sense to come up with a back-seat mounting system for the kids, but that being said, I totally want one.
