Beijing Mac Chick stripping for earthquake relief - makes us wish we lived on a fault line
19-year-old Xiao Yun from China’s Sichuan province has come up with a novel way to raise money for victims of the catastrophic earthquake which struck China 2 months ago - she is posting scantily clad pictures of herself on the web, with promises of more to come as more money is donated. Her site has already received over 1 million hits.
Yes, there IS a Mac in the picture, you just have to train your eyes…
“It’s encouraging to see people donating to help - I will release more photographs of myself to encourage more people to donate,” she writes. “I am still a student, so I am doing my part in my way. I just want to give something back to my hometown.”

iTunes 7.7.1 …And Apple’s QC problems keep on comin’!
Apple released iTunes 7.7.1 this evening (via Software Update). According to Apple, the update:
iTunes 7.7.1 includes fixes to improve stability and performance.
I consider myself a big fan of both stability and performance in general, so I’m all for this update. Unfortunately, the improved performance doesn’t seem to include cutting down on my insane backups times (still usually between 20-minutes and an hour).
And two other things I found odd…
First, after the update, I checked to see if any of my iPhone apps had been updated today. I was a bit surprised to see iTunes thought I had 29 apps in need of updating, even though I had updated them as recently as this morning.
And second, I have my iPhone set to “only sync selected applications”. However, after updating iTunes, while that preference is still selected, iTunes went ahead and re-check marked all my applications, seemingly forgetting my selections.
Boo-Hoo
Ok, so neither of these is the end of the world, but it does mean I had to go through the trouble of redownloading/installing the updates, as well go through the painstaking task of deleting the apps I did not want on my meticulously arranged iPhone home screens that had gotten re-synced, (and then of course sitting through another 35 minute backing up of my iPhone).
Given the number of “quirks” (to be polite) many of us have experienced with the latest iPhone update, I admit I got my hopes up when I saw this update. I suppose since nothing has gone smoothly for me since updating the iPhone to the 2.0 firmware I shouldn’t be surprised by any of this, but I just wanted to see if any of you shared my experience before I go on another whiny rant about Apple QC.
Are white iPhones cracking?
If there’s 2 things I don’t understand in life, they are 1) Why Apple made a white iPhone, and 2) Why anyone would buy it. At least any guy. I have previously called the white iPhone “The Girliest thing since breasts“, and I stand behind that.
However, while a black iPhone may simply be my preference, there now seems to be a bonafide reason to stay away from the white iPhone. Reports are popping up on Apple’s Discussion forum and on sites like Mac Rumors from unhappy white iPhone owners who are experiencing hairline stress fractures on their week-old devices, reminiscent of the G4 Cube and the original white MacBook. Hypothetical question for you… If you were going to make an iPhone clone, and you had gobs of money to hire ANY musical group in the world to appear in your commercial, would you think it would be a good idea to choose a group with the name of your main competitor in the title?
Well, Samsung apparently did for their new Instinct ad (below) featuring “The Apples in Stereo”’s “Let’s Go!“.
However, before we judge Samsung too harshly, this could merely be a reaction to Apple’s Korean iPhone commercial featuring the popular Korean group “Samy and the Sungs“.

Mysterious creature sighted at South Carolina Apple store opening
Faithful Macenstein reader Jordan sent us some pretty cool shots he took at the Charleston South Carolina Apple store grand opening this weekend.
Among the usual shots of the lined up mob and the pristine, soon-to-be-fouled store, is this rather interesting shot of a mysterious creature we would swear was the NJ Devil, if it weren’t taken in SC.
According to Jordan, “This guy was the first one in line”, and it’s no wonder, what with his magical leaping and shape shifting abilities and all.
