Rumor: The new “Pro Mac to sport 4 PCI Express Expansion slots?
Posted by Helper Monkey
Macenstein reader Squeaky Wheel sends in a report that at least one model in Apple’s upcoming PowerMac revision (dubbed by him the ProMac) with boast one extra PCI-Express expansion slot, bringing the total number up to 4. Additionally, he claims there will be one additional FireWire 800 port (for a total of 2) located on the front of the unit.
Now, we don’t know Squeaky Wheel from Adam, and we have never gotten an anonymous e-mail tip that ever proved to yield anything even remotely accurate, so take it for what it’s worth. However, I know many video editors who would be quite excited if this turned out to be true, even if it is only in the high-end Intel quad (or higher?) processor system Apple eventually puts out for video pros. So while this is likely either wishful thinking or educated guessing on his part, we felt it was worth mentioning.
We give this a 6 out of 10 on our “True vs. B.S.” meter.
The existing Power Mac G5 already has 4 PCI-Express slots. One is used for video and that leaves three FREE slots. So, if this report is supposed to represent something new it should state that the next Power Mac will have FIVE PCI-Express slots.
Apple doesn’t usually go through the trouble to make mutiple versions of its motherboards to put out different towers, does it?
I assume this is to cut costs.
HA HA HA HA HA HA
but seriously, I think if one Tower will have 4 (5) PCI slots available, then they all will.
