RIP: Netscape Navigator dies with a whimper
Hey, remember Netscape Navigator? If you were born after 1988 or so, odds are you don’t. Navigator was the first real web browser for the masses, and gave Microsoft’s Internet Explorer the closest thing to a run for its money any browser was able to in the mid 90’s. All Macs shipped with Netscape Navigator as the default web browser until the infamous 1997 deal between Apple and Microsoft which swapped out Navigator for Internet Explorer for the next 5 years.... Gotta love our faithful readers!
Faithful Macenstein reader Jerrett writes: Greetings Doc- I was having a Mac party tonight, really I was just simultaneously upgrading macs to Leopard and installing software. I Apple tech on the side for extra cash, and my uncle just happens to be a re-seller so it works out for both of us. Anyways, I realized I had 6 Macs in the room at one time and decided to snap a photo for you. Can you spot which one of these machines is an abomination of Apple? I actually have 9 macs,... Read More

Ok, am I crazy, or does the narrator here sound exactly like Bill Shatner? Especially at the end. Read More Read More
Italian Spiderman Trailer
Every once in awhile, something so amazingly awesome comes around that even though it has nothing to do with the Mac, I feel obligated to share it with you. Italian Spiderman Trailer is just such a thing. Enjoy. Read More
Newton MoDeminos
Following our recent hard-hitting, 60 Minutes-esque exposé on the use of expensive electronics as dominoes in advertising, we have now come across a bit of Apple history in the form of the first known “iPod-sized electronic device ” domino footage, and it looks like Apple may once again be able to lay claim to the coveted title of Innovator That Everyone Else Copies. “On a slow day in 1996 the members of Apple’s Newton team found a creative use for... Happy Thanksgiving everyone! As we reflect on the the past year, and look for things to be thankful for, many of you likely are thankful it’s been awhile since we last played 6 Degrees of Steve Jobs our thrilling game where we try to link Steve Jobs to almost every famous person in history (except, oddly enough, Kevin Bacon) through a series of past events. Get your own personal Apple.com username
Like most of you, I like to pretend I am an Apple employee, occasionally dressing up as one and standing outside the entrance to my local Apple store greeting customers and dispensing advice. And now I have discovered a way to further encourage my deranged fantasy. Simply add the text ?user= to Apple’s url, and you can create the illusion that you have special access to Apple.com, complete with the username of your choice. Imagine how proud your parents will be when you... Read More
You can never have too many friends, or can you?
Tonight I’m working late, and I’m so bored I’m going crazy. In order to help pass the time between renders, I figured a great time waster would be hitting the “approve friend” button in various social websites. To that end, if you are bored, and don’t mind diluting your friends lists with people you’ve never met, friend me up on MySpace, Virb, and Facebook. Thanks! Read More
When is “Actual Size” not Actual Size?: Leopard’s Blurry Preview Pt 2
My earlier post on Leopard’s seemingly soft Preview led many of our faithful readers to question my methodology, and rightly so. At Macenstein, we’ve never been the type to do “quality” experiments, and “good enough is our very best” has long been our motto. However, I decided to devote one last ounce of my precious energy to the blurry Preview issue, and the results of the test actually led to more questions than answers. (Oh, and then to... Read More
UK iPhone Reviewer: Calls work best when phone is right-side-up, with plastic removed
In reviewing products, we’ve all had our moments of idiocy, but MacRumors forum member dombookpro posted one of the funniest pics we’ve seen in a while. In preparation for the Phone’s UK launch, Sky’s Technology Correspondent Ian Woods was given an iPhone to test, and while his review is very favorable and rather in-depth, 2 things all but invalidate the poor man’s opinion. First comes this line on his initial impression of the iPhone’s call... Read More
