A Better iTunes Icon

better itunes 10 icon

There are lots of things to like about iTunes 10, but the new icon isn’t one of them. In fact, I have yet to hear anyone rave about Apple’s new icon (aside from Steve Jobs, that is). Seriously, it looks like something we would have seen on MP3 SoundJam in the 90’s.

Well, Ryan James has done what Apple should have done in the first place, and made an iTunes icon that doesn’t ruin the entire aesthetics of your Mac when placed in the dock. And the good news is, Steve doesn’t even need to be offended, because Ryan based his icon off Apple’s own iTunes icon for the iPhone. Nice job Ryan.

Heck, GIVE US THE iPHONE app’s icon… anything but that butugly retro-royal uninspired iT10 icon. Just because iTunes has put Apple $50 Billion in the black doesn’t mean the eighth notes have to be black!

  2. The Captain says:

Very nice! Goes so much better with the other icons.
    Thank you, for sharing! 🙂

  3. Roger Mercer says:

Easy to make one that suggests more than music.

  4. Brock says:

Sorry. I like the Apple version better.

  5. Darrell says:

    Whoah! Whoah! Whoah!

This isn’t touch based ios, it’s Mac and windows. I’m not saying this isn’t a good solution or that the new icon is pullin it off- remember it has to be in the dock and also viewable in coverflow, finder icon, etc…

It’s amazing to me what people find to complain about.

  7. iphonerulez says:

Who really gives a crap? It’s just a stupid icon. It must definitely be a slow news day.

  8. Matthew says:

Christ – Is it that much of a big deal? If it bothers you that much, it’s time to get out more.

  9. CPD says:

Yeah, I think a big deal is being made of something that looks perfectly fine for what it is. It shares some similarities with the new QT icon, too.

  10. Frank says:

@CPD I totally agree. It’s an icon, folks. Let’s keep some perspective.

  11. Jeremy says:

I think we’re keeping perspective just fine. The new icon is as if Satan visited your Mac and left behind a present. That’s some perspective. I’ve got yer perspective right ‘ere.

Personally, I love iTunes 10. All iTunes 10.

The app icon? It’s a new one. Not so ugly that it need worst replacement! Has it to be the same that iOS 3 or 4 to make me love it? No, no and no! We are on a different OS, don’t you remember? Or use a different color? I think it’s perfect!

The sidebar icons? Maybe I am alone to know that there is another appearance to use : The Graphite one! Go to “System Preferences -> Appearance” and choose “Graphite” for everything! If you use “graphite”, you’ll find them in a perfect harmony with all the interface!

The new placement of the window buttons? I am fine with it because it saves some pixels for the most important thing in the interface: MY DATA!!!

I always think, when I see changes like the ones that happened to iTunes 10, that it’s a test ! A test to what? A major change in the interface? Or something else?

After all, being open-minded is a quality, isn’t it? And I have always heard that the Apple’s community was the best because we are are smart, respectful, tolerant and OPEN-MINDED!

So I hope the “Open-mind”ness is not lost… It would be the worst thing that can happen!

    Peace and love!

Michel, french user of iTunes !

Here’s the part I don’t get. Are you actually suggesting the old icon was better? I like the new one, and I can’t imagine anyone thinks it isn’t an improvement.

  14. Ex2bot says:

I like the new icon. It’s simple and a bit cartoony and very different from the old one. And the old one wasn’t anything special.

  15. Nicklas says:

Pretty good icons, but how do you actually CHANGE your icon?

  16. I like Apple’s icon I just don’t think it fits in with the rest of it’s apps. It looks like the whole OS is going this way though with MobileMe, Quicktime 10 and now iTunes.

You compare the detail on the safari logo and the iTunes 10 logo and it’s shameful.

  17. xyberdruid says:

GHHH i just spent a half hour trying the method on apples website and …it doesn’t work i know it USED to cause i’ve done it but for some reason you can’t select icon previews

  18. Dan says:

My first thought when seeing the new iTunes ten icon:
“Whoa! Did they really go and steal the Windows Vista/7 motif? Tacky.”
