George Lucas sues Apple over iPod design

Lucasfilm Ltd. today filed an injunction in Santa Barbara’s Superior Court against Apple seeking an immediate halt to production of both its video iPod and iPod nano lines of digital music players. The suit alleges “the willful and knowing copying of form factors and industrial design concepts� in regard to the design of the iPod. Lucasfilm claims the iPod’s design is derivative of a prototype music player Lucas created in the late 70’s, and is actually worn by Darth Vader in his popular Star Wars movies.

“I wanted to create a world where technology had surpassed anything we currently could imagine,â€? said Lucas. “Back then [the 1970’s], the concept of portable music was a very foreign concept. I felt the character of Darth Vader, having killed all his friends, would be extremely lonely, and would likely turn to music to pass the time. So I invented a portable music player he could carry on his belt. I had no idea how the blasted thing would work, but it seemed like a cool idea at the time.”
Lucas is seeking unspecified damages.

Hi there,
I was reading your article ‘George Lucas sues Apple over iPod design’ and laughed at the shear pettiness of some of these huge multimillion/billion dollar companies that apparently haven’t any money left after paying themselves NICE bonuses’!!!!!! After wiping the tears away from that picture I suddenly saw that the belt clip, sorry I mean the portable media player on Darth Vaders belt actually looked much more like a Nokia 3650 mobile phone. Maybe Mr. Lucas’s group of lawyers’ should check it out and get another half billion so they can make the Star Wars TV show on time and within budget. But that’s just in case McDonalds don’t sue Mr. Lucas for miss representation of a hamburger!!!
