Sirius satellite to release portable “Live Mp3 players/radios

In a conference call with shareholders this afternoon, Sirius Satellite Radio announced it will be manufacturing a new line of portable “live MP3 payers, which will have the ability to purchase music with the press of a button. Not many specifics were given on the nature of the new radios, but they are slated to debut this summer (although execs later admitted they may not be able to guarantee delivery by then).
The announcement follows word that Amazon.com will also be mounting a challenge to Apple’s iTunes and iPod in launching its own music download service and player.
Sirius currently has a device called the S50 which allows users to store up to 50 hours of programming, although it is not a portable “live receiver. It will be interesting to see how well Sirius (home of Howard Stern, the “King of All Media) does in its attempts to dethrone the iPod as the “King of all Media Players.
