Apple kills Xserve RAID, now hawking Promise Servers

Apple used today’s Xsan announcement to quietly distract from the fact that it has dropped the “boat anchor” that is the Xserve RAID from its product lineup. Visiting the old Xserve RAID page now shows Apple is selling Promise VTrak E-Class RAID instead of the Xserve RAIDS.

Xserve RAID, while still showing up in Apple-sirte search results, is no longer available in the online store.

“The Promise VTrak E-Class RAID Subsystem delivers outstanding performance, reliability, and expansion for video and server applications. Configure up to sixteen 750GB 7200-rpm SATA or 300GB 15,000-rpm SAS drives in a 3U rack-optimized enclosure for up to 12TB of raw capacity on one or more RAID sets. Promise RAID is an ideal storage solution for direct-attached or SAN-based server and workstation applications, qualified for use with Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, Final Cut Studio 2, and Xsan 2.”

Does that mean they are reselling a third-part product instead of marketing their own Xserve 2?

Too bad. We’ve had excellent service out of our XserveRAID units. They’ve been rock solid and were excellent “bang for the buck”
