I can’t believe no one uses an old crappy Mac…

Well, just 5 days left in our “A Thousand Pictures are Worth a Word” Contest, and we have received a whopping 1 entry. 🙁

Boy, all we asked for is a couple lousy pics of your most beat up, currently working machine, and you can take home a $400 copy of Microsoft Office, 2008. Well, I guess we misjudged this one. When we saw the lame “student” edition of Office was the number 2 Mac software seller on Amazon, we figured there might be some demand for the “full” version, but apparently we can’t even give it away. Sure, we all hate Microsoft, but I mean, if you already have a crappy computer, why not enter, if for nothing else than the thrill of being known as the owner of the world’s crappiest Mac? You can always eBay it or video yourself melting down the Office DVD for YouTube or something to prove your Apple fanboyness.

Oh well, I guess we’ll live and learn, and chalk this one up as a lesson consumer research. Apparently our readers are affluent Mac users who own pristine machines, and either already own Office or hate Microsoft so much they don’t even want a free copy of their flagship product. I guess we’ll try iWork next.

I would have posted mine, however it’s not on the Macenstein page, and I’ve since removed the smashed screen and run the thing with an external LCD TV.

I would be happy to post a pic if i actually owned a mac, but unfortunately i don’t 🙁 YET!

I just can’t decide between iMac and one of the Laptops :O

  3. Yeah, sorry Adam,

Forcing people to load the Macenstein homepage was the only way we could ensure that people weren’t just searching Flickr for broken Macs (like we did) and claiming it was theirs.

Or at least it ensures we’re giving it to someone with good photoshopping abilities…

so does the 1 entry win the software or what?

i have a crack on the bottom of my mac that i have no idea how i got there, but the screen works fine, hows that sound doc?

I have owned a lot of Macs in the past which include (but are not limited to) the following:

Performa 6220, Original Bondi iMac, Wallstreet Powerbook, Graphite iMac, Ruby iMac(wifes), 12″ G4 Powerbook, Dual G4 Tower, G5 iMac, 15″ Macbook Pro, Intel Core Duo iMac, and the most recent-2.8 Dual Quad Core Power Mac with 23″ LCD.

The Performa was donated to my sons Kindergarten teacher a while back, and the only two that aren’t still pristine and in working order are the Graphite iMac(smoke damage killed the mother board) and the 12″ Powerbook(a phantom cat pissed on it and fried the power supply or something which is why I got the MBP) My mother still uses Ruby and the 12″ PB was sold on eBay(with full disclosure). Point is, I don’t think there are that many crappy Macs out there. Mac people tend to take care of there stuff. BTW, it could also be the fact that everyone hates Microsoft.

I have an old SE, but it’s in perfect shape, cosmetically and operationally. I even have a 50 MB SCSI hard drive attached to it. However, I don’t use it (except to make sure it’s still running) and it’s not crappy. I also have B&W G3 that is attached to my home theater for Web surfing and iTunes on the big screen. Nothing crappy about that either. I agree with dlowe402; most of the old Macs out there are in pretty good shape.

  8. Mathias Rios says:

hey that one entry was me!! Office for me!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

  9. Kelly says:

I have an old powerbook, iMac blueberry, a Performa, and even my first…a classic. My current is a 20 inch iMac that I am about to replace with a new model. I also use my MacBook a lot. They all work well. They all look good too. They are incredibly slow, but amazingly they all look good and work well. Hmmmmmmm. I think Doc should have two contests. Who has the most Mac equipment. And who has the most Mac accessories plugged into their existing computer at one time. I think I might place in the top ten on either of those.

  10. Yup, you sure deserve it. 🙂

I’ve taken my cube apart so many times it’s sick (I actually used it as a firewire hard drive enclosure). Yet it’s still a work of art.

  12. Katchoo says:

My Mac Mini has some dust on it. Does that qualify as crappy?

I’d love to have Office, but my Mini was/is my first and only Mac, and I’ve been treating it gently (dust aside).

  13. Jason says:

I’d actually really like the prize (I’m not a MS hater – that’s just being stupid IMHO) – but I don’t have an old mac! Well, I do have an old CRT iMac but it looks fine, just that it sits in the corner and collects dust,

I guess I could bash the thing with a hammer a few times and enter it – bit if I didn’t win it would seem like an awful waste…

  14. DaveG says:

I have a working cube from 2001, and a powerbook 165c. Which also boots and is usable.

    Should i send photos?

  15. JC says:

I would have liked Office, but, like everyone else, my Macs are too fabulous to stand a chance in the contest. Except for an old iBook G3 whose motherboard crapped out a few months ago, but of course that disqualifies it because it can’t even boot.

  16. Seth Alberts says:

Would it be legitimate to enter a picture of a crappy Mac next to one that’s showing the Macenstein page? I’ve got an old G3 iBook that I could probably get to boot but the display isn’t backlit anymore so it’ll just look black.

  17. Jesus says:

Nobody wants Microsoft software on their Mac. Buy iWorks ’08 instead.
