How To: Type the  symbol on your iPhone – revisited

Hmm… What’s that other app…?

You may remember a couple years ago we told you how to go about typing the Apple Symbol  on your iPhone’s keyboard , and that subsequently Apple removed the ability to do so in a later update. While we never really could think of a good reason as to why you ever would WANT to type &#63743 back when you could, now that we can’t, and we have folders in iOS 4, there is a great reason (and workaround) for getting the  symbol back onto the iPhone, and we should thank faithful Macenstein reader Andrew for the tip. Read on

A long time ago back in the day with iOS 2.x you wrote an article about how Apple got rid of the  logo as a text option (when typing in the Japanese keyboard). Well now you can get the  logo back on the iPhone and it is quite easy. Using iTunes (I am using 10) you can simply rename a folder using your computer and type in the character, sync, and it works! Simply awesome. Here is my screen capture as evidence:

Looking good Andrew. And yes, this is a great way to label the folder you should have already made to hide the useless/little used Apple-made apps Apple forces you keep on your iPhone. Much better than my previous folder called “Apple Apps”.

So, now in the future, if you ever need that Apple Symbol, just go into “edit” mode, open your folder, and copy the symbol from that folder.

(And yes, you CAN just e-mail yourself the symbol from a Mac and copy and paste it into a folder name now that we have Copy And Paste, thus bypassing the iTunes step. And, if you want to bypass having a computer involved at all, simply copy the  symbol from anywhere you see it on this page from your iPhone, and then paste it into your folder). Oh, and for those that don’t know, you can make the Apple Symbol on a Mac by typing SHIFT+ OPTION+K.

and save that webapp on your phone and have access to all sorts of glyphs like the apple symbol. Works offline once you’ve saved it to your home screen.

One other way to do this: Type  in the text field of an SMS thread. Exit out of the message (by going back to all your messages), and then come back to the thread. your code will have turned into an ? which you can copy and paste as you see fit 😛

(Interestingly, the code makes the symbol here, buy copying/pasting it doesn’t!)

A tip too if you have Emoji installed, as I do, you can use any of the Emoji characters next to the names too. They look far better than the default glyphs.
