RUMOR: Samsung changes its tune on iTunes-like service

Posted by Lab Rat

Contrary to our report last week , Choi Gee-sung, Samsung’s president of its digital media business, now says Samsung has no plans to compete with Apple by launching its own iTunes-esque music service.

He blamed the reports on a “misunderstanding of comments he made in an interview two weeks ago. In that interview, Gee-sung said, “We are now in talks with our partners to debut a service program like iTunes of Apple. Our No. 1 priority is to help customers use our products with ease.

Based on those comments, it would seem a misunderstanding is unlikely, even with a language barrier. While it is possible he may have meant Samsung had talked to potential partners in the past about debuting such a service, and later decided against the idea, it seems more likely Gee-sung is being reigned in by superiors for spilling the beans too early. Our money says look for a Samsung music service in the next year or two.
