And then there were two…Apple drops iMac G5 from online store
Posted by Dr. Macenstein
Apple today removed the 20-inch iMac G5 from its online store, taking the number of G5-based systems Apple sells down to 2 from 3, and knocking the number of G5 systems people actually care about down to 1 (sorry Xserve).
On January 29th Apple lowered the price on the 20-inch G5 iMac to help clear out inventory. On February 3rd Apple took the 17-inch G5 iMac off its storefront after unloading its remaining supply of the units.
As Apple transitions over to a completely Intel lineup, it is interesting to note that Apple’s G5 PowerMac Quad still provides the best performance available on a Mac, and is likely to do so until Q4 of this year, if the rumors are to be believed. However, even if Apple is able to once again surprise the industry with an ahead-of-schedule release of an Intel-PowerMac, the majority of non-Apple pro apps will not be available in native Intel versions until sometime early next year.
[UPDATE:]There is still a link to the iMac G5 page from Apple’s hardware page, but clicking the BUY NOW link brings you to the Apple Store, which no longers features the G5 model.
