Apple Offers Free Computer Take-Back Program

Posted by Dr. Macenstein

Earlier this week, Apple was named one of the top ten environmentally progressive companies by the Sierra Club for its computer component recycling measures. However, receiving that distinction did not cause Apple to just sit on its socially-conscious laurels. Today Apple stepped its program up a notch and introduced its computer take-back program.

Under the new terms, anyone buying a new Mac through either Apple’s online or retail outlets will receive free shipping PLUS the “environmentally friendly disposal of their old computer.

“Apple is committed to supporting our customers and protecting the environment throughout the entire product life cycle, from purchase through to retirement, said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Now we are making it even easier for Apple’s customers to safely and affordably recycle their used computers and iPods.

Since 2001, Apple says its program has recycled over 90% of the electronic components it has collected.

Apple also announced that the 5th generation iPods (all models) are 100% compliant with the upcoming restrictions of hazardous substances (RoHS) in California and Europe, over 2 months ahead of the July 1st deadline set by the European Union.

    ONE of the top 10?

how many big computer companies are there, anyway?
Whenever I see the top ranking of computer sales, they usually don’t even name 10 companies…

still, I guess it’s better than NOT making the list.

I don’t see “… top ten environmentally progressive COMPUTER companies …” in there.
