Apple releases new Core 2 Duo iMacs, introduces 24-inch model

Apple today updated their entire line of iMacs with Core 2 Duo processors, and introduced a new $1999 24-inch model (outdoing the rumored 23-inch iMac). In addition, the price of the 17-inch model has dropped to a “Mac mini killing $999.

The new 24-inch Mac daddy iMac is approaching the specs of a bona fide Mac Desktop system, blurring the line between consumer and pro user (both in performance and price). In addition to its 40% brighter, 24-inch, 1920×1200 screen (enough real estate for many graphics pros), the 24-inch iMac can handle 3GB of RAM, up to a 500GB hard drive, and an optional 256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT. All the new models are available today.

This is exciting news, not just because of the new hardware announcement, but now we know that Apple’s special event on the 12th will be so Earth-shattering (in their eyes, at least) that they did not want to share the spotlight with the announcement of the new iMacs.

Based on this announcement, we fully expect a new Mac mini featuring the Core 2 Duo to be announced within the month, more than likely accompanied by a price drop to keep them competitive with the new low-end iMac.
