No iPhone AppleCare for AL, CT, NV, or WY residents

Posted by Dr. Macenstein

You better not drop your iPhone if you are a Connecticut resident. Or Nevada. Or Alabama or Wyoming for that matter.

Faithful Macenstein reader hmmm alerts us that those 4 states have apparently joined together to form the new “AppleCare Axis of Evil“, refusing to allow Apple to offer the new iPhone AppleCare plan to their residents.

From the iPhone AppleCare disclaimer:
Apple is not authorized to sell the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone to residents of Alabama, Connecticut, Nevada, or Wyoming. If you are a resident of Alabama, Connecticut, Nevada, or Wyoming, please do not order the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone. If you submit an order that includes the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone, Apple will remove the item from your order, notify you about the removal, and process the remaining items on your order.

About 3 years ago, Apple and Florida had a little AppleCare spat, resulting in Apple’s inability to sell the plan for its prodcuts in that state. That issue has since been resolved, and currently there seems to be no other states restricting the sale of AppleCare on any other Apple product.

    how come?

My guess is those states suck.

I can vouch for Nevada being the nexus of suckitude…

    uh, why?

I’m guessing there’s some sort of conditions in the coverage that those state’s AGs think surrenders basic protections required under their state laws. And I’ll bet Apple could sell the plan if they specifically excepted customers in those states from those conditions.

As for “suckitude,” CT has some of the best consumer protection in the country. Our AG, who would be the one preventing the Apple Care sale, uncovered the Best Buy faux website (actually an internal page) that had different prices than the actual Internet pages. When customers claimed the web advertised a lower price, Best Buy showed them the higher price on the fake page. CT was also one of the first states to sue MS for predatory behaviors. And unlike most states, in CT you get full warranty protection without having to send in those stupid registration cards. Whatever coverage other people get for sending in those personal data-for-sale cards, we get without surrendering our information.

I can be the one to vouch for Alabama, it truly sucks down here. We have all kinds of sucky laws. We have a beer law that prohibits most good beers and now no applecare for the iPhone. Until 3 months ago we did not even have an Apple store. At least my applecare is good for my macs.

    great graphic, dr. macenstein.

  7. imajoebob says:

To make it clear, did the states prohibit the sale of AppleCare, or does Apple choose not to sell it?

    Big difference between those two.

Um, you better not drop your iPhone anywhere. AppleCare doesn’t supprt end-user damage, and AT&T doesn’t offer insurance [which would cover it] for the iPhone.
