OS X 10.5.2: Trouble in “virtual paradise”?
Faithful Macenstein reader dolfke writes us with a warning to Second Life users hoping to test out the latest 10.5.2 Leopard build. According to dolfke, 10.5.2 breaks SL functionality in a big way.
“sl launches, then the general connection screen, where one can introduce name and password, then connect … sl loads, but when connecting to inworld, the last stage before coming onworld, all stalls, beachball, then CRASH …all 4 versions, Beta grid, normal program, Windlight and release candidate”.
Unfortunately, the only advice Linden Labs (Second Life’s creators) can offer at the moment is to do a total system reinstall back to 10.5.1 to get it back on track. Not exactly ideal. Apple recently fixed a QuickTime exploit which allowed hackers access to SL players’ virtual bank accounts, so odds are they’re aware of SL’s popularity, and are hopefully working on a fix for this 10.5.2 bug.
We’re not sure how many of you out there would be affected by this, but since roughly 9 million people play Second Life (sort of “Webkinz“, for adults), we figured we’d pass it along. (And of course, it’s never a good idea to test beta software on your primary computer for exactly this reason). If any of you have had success running SL with the latest Leopard build, please let us know.
That’s probably why the 10.5.2 update has not yet been released!..
Have you tried the OnRez Viewer? I’m not on mac so I can’t test it. Available here:
http://viewer.onrez.com/
PLEASE file this as a bug to Apple with information if you have a seed – http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/
This is currently a non-issue for regular users as the 10.5.2 update has not been released to the general public by Apple. Ergo, no one outside of developers would be affected by this. It’s a bit sensationalistic to report otherwise.
“bug reports to Apple and Linden Labs are at this moment not delivering any results nor a beginning to solve this MAJOR issue …”
Major issue. In a beta OS (that you likely don’t have legitimate access to). And in a GAME. Cry me a river.
Yes, I know, its only “beta” software, but I wanted to warn other users for it, and no, never install beta soft on a mean system …
And YES, I have a legitimate copy ..
I used Leopard for testing and developing purposes for more than a year now, mostly the alfa and beta builds Apple provided, and with every prelimary version, sl just runned fine.
Now with 10.5.2 no sl anymore, I filed a bug report to Apple, and be sure, the are investigating it, they even gave me a bug report number, and I inform via this medium about the progress.
Apple has a very good tradition to inform their developers for new builds, so don’t worry, they will however solve this problem, in conjunction with Linden Labs, who heve also very good connections at Apple.
And yes, beta soft is there for testing by developers, so when the final version suits, there as little problems as possible.
I asked for ppl to let me know via this medium if they run 10.5.2 what are their expierience, not to write Apple, only developers can file reoprts to Apple with any result …
have a happy new year, all happy mac users !!
Yeah, total sensationalism. Pre-releases breaking games is not news. Move along, as they say.
as i already sayd Daniel & co (hihi), I would be glad to know if other ppl have also problems with SL when using this (prelimary) build, so we can take action and file an accurate bug report to Apple.
I’m very confident with the final release from 10.5.2 this will be fixed !
I just bought a new MacBook with Leopard and bad news – Second Life just freezes the whole thing shortly after logging in. I don’t have Tiger, I have nothing to revert to, cause I’m running out-of-box system… can’t use SL at all 🙁
I hope the Linux version is in a good shape.
The problem seems to be that the OSX SL client (universal) was made for G5, Linden lab hasn’t upgraded it for the macintel.
So it can’t be solved. They doesn’t even have a beta intel client.
It’s better working with the linux alpha client…
I’m on macbook pro under leopard with the last updates… so tired with thos bugs that I’ve uninstalled SL…
I have just discovered this problem too, now that I need to work on SL with my new Macbook. Dismaying! Anyone have any news about a potential fix? Have some work to do on SL and would prefer to use the Macbook instead of the old G4.
Thanks …
I just bought a new macbook with OS X.5.2 and Second life crashes spectacularly. So it’s not a beta operating system anymore and it’s not fixed.
So I’m running SL on my 5.5 year old dell desktop….
Yeeeah. This is why I bought a mac…..
For a total freeze about 30 seconds into sl..this worked on my NEW Macbook…(not the problem with old ones) Find the “user_settings” folder under your Second Life folder that is under yourname/library/Application support/secondLife/user_settings Data. Note also you will have a folder with your Avatar’s name. Don’t change the settings.xml file in that folder – change the one in the user_settings folder.
* once you have found user_settings/settings.xml. You will have to manually add the command to disable Object Occlusion to this file. The lines to add before the “” are:
o
o
* Save the setting.xml file and then try to connect to Second Life.
It worked for me like a dream!!
Want to access SL
new MacBookPro os x 10.5.2 [opens then crashes, then does not open]
want to change the code, but the lines look blank in ulber voight’s helpful message
and where do I put those two lines — more details please
Well, Linden Labs says its related to the graphic card Nvidia 8600 M GT …
The drivers are not compatible with sl viewers after 1.19 …
And sure, I would be glad to try out the solution of ulver voigh, unfortunately, the lines are blanc …
Its happening ONLY on my new Macbook Pro 17″, maximal configuration …

I have a new Macbook Pro and had been using Second Life perfectly for two months – when suddenly the new SL 1.20.4/5 viewer came out ,and now the graphic driver does not work, or so it seem with the random frequent crashing. Only now it’s a new improved crashing where instead of being thrown off SLyou are completely frozen for up to several minutes and then SL actually resumes for a few minutes, only to crash again in the same way over and over. I assume Apple is responsible for any driver updates as usual – which I assume they’ll pass on to all of us out here trying to play games on a Mac.
I am having the similar problems with my MacBook Pro..2.5 GHZ intel core 2 and a Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT video card with the newest sl release.
I get temporary freezes and frequent crashes…
I use SL for educational work..this is a very serious issue.
All advice, help welcome
Wow! 9 million people hang out a second life? I am not surprise. The social network and virtual world is awesome. I will check it out.
