Leaked “alternate edit” of Microsoft Seinfeld Ad
Faithful Macenstein reader Roger came across this “alternate edit” of the Microsoft Seinfeld ad, and I must say, I think they should have gone with this one. Entitled “Windows, not Walls”, it admittedly borrows a bit from Apple’s “Here’s to the Crazy ones”ads (which also featured Seinfeld), but Microsoft isn’t exactly against copying Apple, and I think I actually understand this one.
Well, at least this one doesn’t have as many churros, anyway.
I’ve had time to digest the real ad, and I’ve come to a singular message I can glean from it: Bill gates like cheap crap. Now, I like cheap crap as much as the next guy. I can’t fathom spending $35 on a pair of boxers, when I can get a decent quality 3-pack at target for 9 bucks.
But when it comes to software for a computer where I’ve invested one or two (or more) thousand dollars, I’m more inclined to go with the guy wearing an $80 black tee shirt and $150 dungarees (likely wearing those $35 boxers underneath) than the guy buying $17 oxfords. Would you put Pep Boys oil for $1.19 a quart in your Porsche, or would you spring for the Mobil 1 synthetic that costs $8? Okay, you own a Porsche. Which would you have your mechanic put in?
It’s purely perception, but I’m inclined to believe that guy in the black shirt holds a higher standard for the product he puts his name on.
Mobil1 costs $8?!? Are you nuts? Get a 5qt jug for under $23 at WalMart. It used to be just $18. You can do the math, but that isn’t $8 a qt.
Way to stay focused on the topic Ken. As a matter of fact http://www.autobarn.net/mobil1store.html has Mobil 1 at $7.49 & $8.49 list, $7.39 & $8.19 sale price, for the High Mileage & Extended Performance products respectively.
Go go synthetic lubricant flame wars! 😛
(Why does this seem like such a natural segue from the Gates-Seinfeld performance?)
The leaked alternative is way better!
After I played the original commercial to my wife she asked, “Why are you wasting my life?” Gee, kinda like Microsoft in general.
