Windows 8’s new BSoD blames the hardware manufacturers for crashes

When looking to upgrade an operating system, especially one that has been around as long as Windows (and largely unchanged since Windows 98), it’s always a good idea to take a look at the features your customers use the most and update those to make the idea of upgrading more enticing. And there’s no feature Windows users use more than the Blue Screen of Death.

Yes, it's the PC's fault...

What I really find most interesting about this new blue screen of death (and yes, the sad face does for some reason evoke comparisons to the Mac Finder’s “Happy Face) is the wording of the new error message.

“Your PC ran into a problem that it couldn’t handle, and now it needs to restart.”

In the past, there was always a mention of how WINDOWS had dropped the ball (see below). But now apparently it’s the PC that just can’t “handle” the awesomeness that Windows 8 is trying to lay down.

    Great.

With Microsoft Windows 8, we not only have FANS on a tablet with its incessant NOISE, but we also have a new and improved BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH.

  2. JL says:

Since Windows users have to look at this screen so often, I’m glad they’re making some effort to make it pretty…

  3. ArtOfWarfare says:

I find it interesting how much effort it looks like they put into this screen & message.

The face is just text… I feel like somehow that’s supposed to look hip or something. Then there’s the wording of the message, like you said.

  4. Charles says:

Pathetic. At the least, they should use the old BSOD haiku’s…

  5. Rob says:

It’s no longer the “Blue Screen of Death”, more like the: Blue Screen of Denial…Blue Screen of Misplaced Blame…

  6. Freerange says:

    LOL – perfect!

  7. Jack says:

Could you guys be anymore stereotypical?… I hate Windows and I only averaged five BSOD’s in over ten years and I mess around with systems enough in the worst ways to actually legitimately cause a BSOD and never get that far.

  8. Vidiot says:

As always, Microsoft should learn from Apple’s ways: If Windows would run exclusively on Microsoft-designed and manufactured hardware, there would likely be fewer crashes, hangs and Beach Balls of Death. Whoops… I meant “Blue Screens”.

Could you please be a little more ignorant and feeding the unacknowledged a bit more?
Seriously, spend some time to learn about OS design and you know what the reason of BSOD is.

If you don’t want to: at leas to a web search on the causes of BSOD.
Numbers have been released for Vista at least.
And they show a huge percentage to be AMD (ATi) but way more to be nVidia GPU drivers.

Since Vista most Applications and even Services are heavily limited in how they can access hardware components.
Drivers are handled differently, because every Software with intensive usage of the Driver APIs would run way slower.
Esp. 3D games are heavily depended on optimised graphics drivers.
But the developers at nVidia seems to favour performance over stability a bit too much.

Of cause hardcore MAC nerds don’t know this trouble.
    a) you are happily paying extra to buy a 2 generations old graphics card with apple sticker that’s driver is now refined
    b) you don’t play games with latest generation 3D render engines
