“If you see a stylus, they blew it.”
Looks like Samsung blew it.
As has been the trend in recent years, Apple once again did not bother to fork over the big bucks for a Super Bowl spot, but that doesn’t mean Apple wasn’t represented. Of course, it was in the form of a line of Apple-fanboys lined up in the cold (presumably for hours or days) for the next “big thing” from Apple, but who are instead ultimately converted to Samsung fans when they see that the new Galaxy Note has… A STYLUS!
I realize that Samsung is trying to differentiate their Galaxy Note from the iPhone and the “mindless sheep” who enjoy their products, but to attempt to use the fact that the phone comes with a stylus as a selling point… I don’t recall hearing, seeing, or smelling ANYONE complaining about the iPhone’s lack of a stylus. In fact, why not put a winding power crank on the side of the Note and have the Apple fans in line “ooh” and “Ahh” about it?
Out of all Steve Jobs’ quotes about technology, I feel his famous “if you see a stylus, they blew it.”, referring to anything with a touch screen, was perhaps his most spot-on.
Amen Doc.
OMG this is so pretentious. They put a circus an a street? And well, the stylus, …
So, this add is telling me if you buy this big Samsung, you will need a stylus to be able to work with…
No thanks.
No, you don’t need the stylus, any more than you do on any other android or iOS tablet. They just provide one, sort of like some android tablets come with a detachable keyboard.
Not a fair article. This is a niche product for people that WANT A stylus. Thanks for giving me an option Samsung.
You know you can just go buy a capacitive stylus for like $5 right?
It’s a normal smart phone. NOthing you can’t do with a finger.
Astonishing failure Samsung !!
You don’t advertise a “niche product” for option-seekers during the Superbowl. You are casting the widest net possible. This is a big deal for Samsung.
Agreed doc. I thought the ad was dumb. If you want a stylus… heck I can get one for my iPhone and iPad. It’s ten bucks on Amazon, and it works great. But I don’t need it if I forget it.
What can you do with a stylus that you can’t do with a finger?
Lose it 😉
@ViewRoyal: Well, technically you can lose a finger — it’s just (hopefully!) a lot harder to do it.
As the Shop teacher in South Park sez: “If you screw around, someone is gonna get hurt!”. 😛
You can loose a finger, just ask my Uncle Zeke about his catchfish noodling accident!

All I can think of is write text and draw. It might also be useful for things like Terminal programs like VNC or RDP clients. These are areas where precision is important and fingers aren’t so hot.
By the way, you can also use your fingers.
I’ll bet that Samsung stylus thingy would be great for scratching my asshole!
No, no, you’ve got it wrong. You scratch your asshole with someone else’s Samsung stylus thingy, after you surreptitiously “borrow” it. The key here is remembering to return it. It probably stinks already, though.
I have picked up several styli for my iPad because there are just some applications where, due to years of hand and muscle training, a stylus is more natural than a finger. The Apple “one model fits all users” doesn’t always work in the real world.
Can I borrow your styli? I have an itch I want to scratch!
Stylus is so “The 1990’s”. Are we being taken back in time?
I own several styli for my iPad because I take handwritten notes and do not like doing that with my finger. That said, I have never used a stylus with my iPhone and think making the stylus the primary selling point of your product is absolutely ridiculous, unless your product is the stylus itself.
Keep in mind a couple of differences, though:
The iPhone has a much smaller screen (3.5″ versus 5.3″). I’m not sure I’d want to try writing on my iPhone screen, either, but this screen may be a nice trade-off between the enormous iPad screen and the tiny iPhone screen.
Hey, Palm Pilot HD!!
Nothing says mid nineties like a giant phone – and nothing says early 2000 tech like a stylus.
Everybody wants a phone that’s more than 5 inches diagonal. That’s why the Dell Streak sold so well! Oh wait…
Guys, please… If you say “A” is good to say “B”, because actually, you don’t NEED the stylus, but, if you want to use it, you can. That’s it, its really simple to understand..
Asian ingenuity at work!
We know what Americans want!
Rrrriiight.
Sometimes you want something more precise than a touch…
obviously a stylus would be a step back… I think some form of mind control could work well… not sure how well you’d be able to sell people on the helmet, though.
Samsung — Palm Vx called and wants its stylus back.
I’ll come back here in 6 months when people realize that using a “pen” to “write” is better then using your finger and everyone starts using the stylus again. The only people I can think of that use their fingers to write are kids in kindergarten.
Some of us actually have jobs where we need to write, answer emails quickly etc and not lift things in warehouses for $10 an hour. Sorry you finger tapping box pushing monkeys have no use for it.
I hear Apple is having a contest… See who can create the best finger painting. LOL I’ll take precision.
See you in 6 months when you are all stumbling over your stupid comments and are the only ones not using a stylus.
and apple is creating and motivating want-to-be narcissist with Siri and their ‘God’ ad.
some have stylus fingers, some have fat fingers. fat fingering a touch sucks.
iOS doesn’t work the way i work. ? products not work way one would think. why?
long live the open source and open markets (as they quickly get bought up and closed).
Silly Samsung, the only people they are impressing are owners of Apple products, and how we find their pitiful attempt at coolness about as relevant as Mitt Romney and the rest of the GOP.
“I don’t recall hearing, seeing, or smelling ANYONE complaining about the iPhone’s lack of a stylus.”
That is by brain numbing choice. There has been loads and loads of complains about the increasing lack of accurate styluses in the market. You’re ignoring it. By choice.
The stylus is a TOOL and when you dismiss a product because it feature an extra tool, it’s your mind patterns that is flawed, not the product.
Agreed. It´s sad when people become fanatical supporters of a determined brand to the point that they dismiss good tech just because it wasn´t brought from their company. Bet that if the tables where reverted and apple adopted a stylus for precision apps, people whould be svreaming GENIUS.
Hmm, how come the Galaxy Note having a stylus being a bad thing? I bought it exactly BECAUSE it has a stylus. Even the note, with the biggest screen of any phone on the market benefits from a stylus. Why? Because sometimes, you have a webpage that is packed and your finger is HUGE and you cannot select the right detail. Having to be able to use anything with your finger will seriously screw up UI design, everythign has to be huge and well, consider that the iPhone is tiny compared to the Note, so it applies even more there. If that does not bother you, you might not mind a dumbed down UIs, where half the options have been removed, because of the small screen. I do mind that.
Besides, the Note got standard Android on it, as since it is probably the only phone that has such a huge screen, and everythign is a lot bigger, you can actually do with the stylus. The real reason it is there is because of the name, to use it for designing, annotating pictures and doing notes on it instead of paper, which is the reason I got it for. For that it is perfect, as I don’t want to have to lug around a iPad or other huge device when I have a great idea that needs writing down.
And sometimes, especially when using a FULL keyboard (that you cannot even fit on a smaller screen), the stylus speeds up typing and avoids mistakes big time.
I just got the new Samsung Note 2 – complete with stylus. Whilst this may be heresy in the sacred hallows of Macland, I have to say it works. It works well and I love it.
I suspect that history will look back upon the late Mr. Jobs as both a creative visionary genius and equally as a man who made mistakes.
Sorry Steve – this one falls into the later category.
HAaaaahahahahahhahahahahaha…..
Sorry to dig that out… But how about the all new Apple Pencil now? Did apple blew it, too?
Not sure yet. But what I do know is the styluses of 5 years ago aren’t quite the same as they are now…
– The Doc
That’s so true Doc! I’m just glad that Apple seems to have taken a turn in their philosophy and are able to adapt good features others already have – like the stylus from a Surface Pro 3.
It makes them a tech focused company again instead of a fanatic group as Daniel stated above.
Even if it means that they act against the vision of their great leader like Blueboy stated above.
“Out of all Steve Jobs’ quotes about technology, I feel his famous “if you see a stylus, they blew it.”, referring to anything with a touch screen, was perhaps his most spot-on.”
Yes, but maybe he was just wrong…
