HandBrake 0.9.2: Released
In their eternal quest to avoid a version 1.0 release, the folks over at HandBrake have just announced the release of HandBrake 0.9.2. There are a slew of enhancements, most notably Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) sound in MP4 files, and the addition of native iPhone sizes. Please note this update is LEOPARD ONLY, folks, so you manually have found your excuse to upgrade. Download version 0.9.2 here.
Thanks for posting this. Handbrake is an awesome application that makes it easy to make movies viewable on an iPod/iPhone.
I just got an Apple TV last week and am really liking it. One thing I wanted to do was to be able to rip a bunch of my DVDs that the kids watch so that they could just pick them from the menu and not have to scratch, climb up on the cabinet to the DVD player, etc., but I wanted to wait to see what happened with 5.1 support.
Last week, I bought VisualHub so that I could do this and have been disappointed in the results. Aside from issues trying to rip the DVD initially with MacTheRipper, VisualHub would induce skips at VOB breaks and switched soundtrack from English to Spanish randomly.
Yesterday, I downloaded the Handbrake update and tried it out. It took a little experimentation to get the right settings (they don’t have an ATV 5.1 preset just yet), but I got it working and it’s great! Both AC3 and mixdown in the same file, small, and way faster than VisualHub.
Mark this up as another check in the “open source wins” column.
