Popular Mechanics pits iMac vs. Gateway One and MacBook vs. Asus M51SR – Guess who wins?
It’s fanboy Tuesday here at Macenstein!

Popular Mechanics recently ran two comparison tests between the latest iMac and the Gateway One, and the latest Penryn MacBook vs. Asus M51SR.
“In both the laptop and desktop showdowns, Apple’s computers were the winners. Oddly, the big difference didn’t come in our user ratings, where we expected the famously friendly Mac interface to shine. Our respondents liked the look and feel of both operating systems but had a slight preference toward OS X. In our speed trials, however, Leopard OS trounced Vista in all-important tasks such as boot-up, shutdown and program-launch times. We even tested Vista on the Macs using Apple’s platform-switching Boot Camp software—and found that both Apple computers ran Vista faster than our PCs did.â€
Oh SNAP! I will say this though. While the Asus is one ugly-ass Mo’ Fo’, the Gateway isn’t as hideous as I expected. While the iMac is still the winner of the beauty contest, the Apple logo on the iMac’s Jay Leno-esque chin seems a little too prominent IMO. Might be time for yet another redesign…
While the iMac’s aluminum finish is handsome and quite corporate, Apple may screw themselves shedding the white. From the iMac to the iPod, and even most MacBooks, white has vanished, White was a virtual trademark of Apple. It communicated simplicity, clean design, and a user friendly experience. All these sharp edges (picked up an iPod classic?) and burnished and black finishes are cold and impersonal. Apple used to make products you wanted to hug. Now they’re just more of the same technology everybody else has. Attractive. but not personal.
hey did you notice the black bottom of the white macbook?
did i miss something?
Yeah the macbook bottom is black. that’s strange.
I guess just some funky lighting… or some bad photoshoping?
